NT is facing Drake for the first time in school history. North Texas won the Sleep Inn Classic year, defeating Iowa State, Central Arkansas, Butler and Wichita State. NT s one loss came at the hands of Missouri State. North Texas Picked To Finish Fifth North Texas has been picked to finish fifth in the Sun Belt Conference preseason poll for the second straight year. Cantler And Martinez Named To Preseason All-Sun Belt Team Mallory Cantler and Mariza Martinez were named to the preseason All-Sun Belt Team for the first time in their careers. The two selections are the most ever by a North Texas team. Only Louisiana-Lafayette had more players selected with five. Back At The Helm TJ Hubbard is back for his third season as head coach of the Mean Green. In 2009, North Texas became the fastest team to reach the 20-win mark, posted the second-most wins and the best winning percentage in school history. Hubbard won his 50th game last year and is seven wins shy of holding the most coaching victories at North Texas. Delay Of Season had its season delayed because of bad weather. The Mean Green was forced to cancel its first four games because of the snow that hit the DFW area. North Texas will try again on Wednesday, Feb. 17 on the road against Stephen. F. Austin. The Mean Green is 4-2 in season-opening games and 3-2 in seasonopening games on the road. North Texas is 6-4 in the series against the Jacks, splitting a doubleheader last year. Ashley Lail allowed just four hits in the opening win. SFA went 0-4 in the Bulldog Round Robin this past weekend. Hosting Sleep Inn Classic North Texas is hosting just one tournament this year after having two tournaments and the Sun Belt Conference tournament in Denton last year. The Mean Green hosts the Sleep Inn Classic on Feb. 19-21. NT won the tournament last year. The seven-team tournament includes Drake, Arkansas, Colorado State, Buffalo, Missouri State and Sam Houston State. NT s only loss in the tournament last year came at the hands of Missouri State. Familiar Opponents The Mean Green is 4-12 overall against its opponents in the Sleep Inn Classic. North Texas is facing Drake for the first time, and Sam Houston State for the 10th time. All of the teams except Buffalo and North Texas were able to start their seasons last weekend. Drake and Arkansas already faced each other with the Bulldogs defeating the Razorbacks, 2-1. Friendly Confines For the fourth straight year, the Mean Green will play in the friendly confines of Lovelace Stadium. The Mean Green played at Denia Park, a city park in Denton, the first three years of the program, compiling a 24-39 record there. Overall, North Texas is 40-38 at Lovelace Stadium the last three years. 2004-14-14 at Denia Park 2005-4-14 at Denia Park 2006-6-11 at Denia Park 2007-12-11 at Lovelace Stadium 2008-14-9 at Lovelace Stadium 2009-14-18 at Lovelace Stadium Sisters For the second straight year, North Texas has sisters on its roster. Newcomers Leslie Hirsch, Monica Hirsch and Brittany Taylor are all competing for time. Senior Pitchers has two senior pitchers on its roster. North Texas will face four teams that are currently ranked in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll - Week #1. Oklahoma is ranked No. 13, Texas is 20th, Baylor is at No. 25 and Louisiana-Lafayette is ranked 2010 ROSTER No. 16th. North Texas will also face Oklahoma State which received votes in the poll. Another Record-Setting Season Despite bowing out of the conference tournament early, the Mean Green had another record-setting year in 2009. NT set team records in slugging percentage, home runs, lowest ERA, lowest opponent batting average, shutouts and fewest losses.the Mean Green set individual records in batting average, onbase percentage, lowest ERA and lowest opponent batting average. All-Sun Belt For the second straight year, Mallory Cantler was named first-team All-Sun Belt at first base in 2009. Mariza Martinez joined her with second-team honors in the outfield. Despite missing games down the stretch with a broken bone in her hand, Cantler had another record-setting year. She led the Mean Green with a.404 batting average and and a.456 on-base percentage. Martinez was second on the team with a.316 batting average. She led the team with 11 home runs and tied for the team lead with 16 stolen bases. Rounding Out Sun Belt Play The Mean Green rounded out its 2009 Sun Belt Conference play with an 11-12 record. The 11 wins is a school record for most Sun Belt wins in a season.
