Myrtle Beach Pelicans (10, 10 home) TFirst Place, CL Southern, 0.0 GA LAST TIME OUT: The Pelicans won 91 over the Blue Rocks in front of a sellout crowd on Opening Night. DUANE UNDERWOOD picked up the win, fanning five in five innings. He allowed just one run, unearned...the bullpen tossed four scoreless and walkless innings...nearly everyone got involved in the offense. Only Jeimer Candelario didn t reach safely, only he and Mark Zagunis didn t pick up a hit, and JACOB HANNEMANN, JACOB ROGERS, and CARLOS PENALVER all notched three hits...the Birds smacked 15 hits, four of which went for extra bases. THE OPENING DAY BLUES : Wilmington suffered another defeat to Myrtle Beach on Opening Day last night. The Pelicans have squared off against the Blue Rocks on Opening Day in 13 of the last 14 years and, despite a losing 67 record against them, Myrtle Beach has won five straight against the Rocks on the season s first day. MARK ZAGUNIS (18/15). In addition to ranking nine of the Pelicans in their Top 30 Cubs prospects, Baseball America also lauded a handful of Pelicans players with Best Tools labels. They also list Juan Paniagua as the top Sleeper prospect in the system and Ely as the Best Defensive Player from the Cubs 2014 draft class. WE RE NUMBER ONE: Making the abundance of talent of this year s roster even more remarkable is that the Chicago Cubs farm system has been widely regarded the best in baseball. The system received top marks from ESPN s Keith Law, Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus, MLB.com, the Sporting News, Minor League Ball, and the MiLBY s. DEJA VENEZUELA: Pelicans shorstop Carlos Penalver collected three hits last night, beginning his night 3for3 MYRTLE BEACH COUGARS: Last season, new Pelicans before grounding out in his final trip in the eighth. The Aragua, Venezuela, native hadn t had a threehit game since June 14 of last year when he picked up three hits for ClassA Kane County against the Beloit Snappers. Oddly enough, Penalver s performance last night is stikingly similar to what he did on Opening Night a year ago. April 3, 2014 he went 3for3 with a run scored, an RBI, a walk, and two steals. In addition to the three hits last night, the defensive wizard scored a run, knocked one skipper Mark Johnson s club went an MiLBbest 9149 and swept through the Midwest League playoffs with a 70 record on the way to a Midwest League championship. The new Pelicans skipper will have 19 of the players from that team with him on Opening Night: Blackburn, Candelario, Caratini, Carhart, Concepcion, Dunston Jr., Hannemann, Heesch, Lockhart, Martinez, Paniagua, Penalver, Pugliese, Rogers, Skulina, Torrez, Tseng, Underwood, and Zagunis. in, and stole a base. A PIECE OF THE PUZZLE: One of the main reasons that the PROSPECT 9PACK: Last year s Pelicans roster was one of the most talented in team history, but this year s group appears even better on paper. Nine of the 25 active players on the roster are ranked in the Cubs Top 30 prospects according MLBPipeline. Cubs farm system has attained such a high reputation is through player aquisition on the trade front. The Pelicans have four of those players, including highlytouted prospect, outfielder Billy McKinney. McKinney, ranked the No. 83 prospect in baseball by com s Prospect Watch and Baseball America. The balanced Baseball America and No. 81 by Baseball Prospectus, was drafted roster has five position players and four pitchers on each list: RHPs PAUL BLACKBURN (No. 27 MLB.com/No. 18 Baseball America), DAURY TORREZ (25/30), JENHO TSENG (11/11), DUANE UNDERWOOD (8/10), Catcher VICTOR CARATINI 24th overall in the 2013 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics. The 20yearold hit.264 with 11 homers last season, split between Class AAdvanced Stockton (Athletics) and Daytona (Cubs). He excelled after coming over in a trade with Addison Russell and (19/13), third baseman Dan Straily in exchange for Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to JEIMER CANDELARIO Oakland. With Daytona, McKinney hit.301 in 51 games. Brazis, ON THE FIELD National Anthem...
