STEWARDS REPORT Murrumbidgee Turf Club Wagga Wagga Racecourse Monday 26 June 2017 Weather: Fine Track: Good (4) Rail: +8m from 1400m to W/Post, +6m remainder STEWARDS: T.J.Davidson (Chairman), J.A.Shultz & D.R.McLean (10u1b) When B. Murphy was reported ill, Stewards permitted the following rider replacements. B. Murphy was advised he must provide a medical clearance before riding again. Race 1 Race 2 Race 3 Race 4 Race 5 Race 7 J. Penza on Sweettalkingwilly M. Cahill on Mooncoin N. Souquet on Class Clown J. Penza on Gentleman Max B. Vale on Lazyaxl B. Vale on Pay The Ones RACE 1: 2yo Handicap 1200m: Rocky High- Laid inwards in the straight. Canford Lad- Began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly bumping heavily with Working Together. Denver- Got its head up in the early stages while racing keenly. Working Together- Bumped heavily with Canford Lad on jumping. Was obliged to race wide without cover throughout. Rider J. Richards(a) stated after striking interference out of the barriers, and as he would have had to restrain too far to get in and get cover, his mount was obliged to race wide throughout. He added the filly travelled fairly until straightening before weakening over the concluding stages. He further stated Working Together, which was having its first race start, would benefit from the run. A post-race veterinary examination did not detect any abnormalities. Sweettalkingwilly- Laid out passing the 600m. Stefanya- Steadied near the 850m while racing tight to the inside of Little Naïve, which shifted in and away from Canford Lad. RACE 2: Maiden Handicap 1400m: Mister Steadfast- Slow to begin. Shifted out after the start. Taken out to improve near the 200m before being directed inwards abruptly near the 50m to continue to improve. Rider B. Clark stated that shortly after straightening Alert Rein commenced to roll in and he therefore elected to
switch out and try and obtain clear running. He added he was unable to obtaining running until approaching the 50m where he shifted inwards abruptly when a run presented itself. Dreamship- Trainer Mr N. Olive was fined $50 under AR59A for failing to produce the Thoroughbred Identity Card for the filly when requested. Raced tight with Rapture Miss passing the 100m. Rapture Miss- Raced wide throughout. Raced tight with Dreamship passing the 100m. Mooncoin- Slow to begin. Alert Rein- Slow to begin. Raced keenly in the middle stages. Shifted out away from the heels of Mittagundi near the 700m. Not So Precious- B. Vale replaced R. Bensley (overweight) as the rider of the gelding. R. Bensley was fined $200 under AR120(b). RACE 3: Benchmark 65 Handicap 2000m: Zarreig- Slow to begin. Go Get em- Slow to begin. Rider M. Taylor(a) stated she was instructed to get back and after obtaining a position at the tail of the field her mount travelled well. She added under a big weight and with the slow tempo of the event the gelding was unable to sprint when the pace increased passing the 600m. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding did not detect any abnormalities. Midnight Obsession- Co-Trainer Mr K. Dryden was fined $100 under AR140B for the late removal of blinkers from the mare. Gun Trace- Raced wide throughout. RACE 4: Benchmark 65 Handicap 1200m: The start of this race was delayed by approximately 6 minutes when, after the majority of the field were loaded, the barrier stalls opened prematurely. All horses were pulled up relatively quickly and returned to the start where the barriers were tested and all horses cleared to race by the Club s veterinarian. Force of Magic- Bumped after the start by Imperious. Gentleman Max- Raced wide throughout. To a Degree- Rider B. Clark could offer no tangible explanation for what he described as a disappointing performance adding his mount settled well in behind the leaders but was off the bit at the 700m and did not run on in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not detect any abnormalities. Imperious- Began awkwardly. Bumped after the start by Force of Magic. Laid inwards in the early part of the straight. Taken outwards abruptly near the 200m to improve. Sand Dune- Raced keenly in the early stages.
Erins Zar- Trainer Mr L. Pepper was fined $200 under LR35 for the late notification of S. Miller as the rider of the gelding. Steadied near the 400m when disappointed for a run between Miss Farloo and To a Degree. Newrons- Rider A. Masters stated she was instructed to go forward and after giving her mount a push out of the barriers it commenced to race very keenly. She added the gelding travelled well until straightening but did not respond to her riding in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination found the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Miss Farloo- Slow to begin. Checked near the 200m when crowded between Esprit Warrior (B. Vale), which shifted out and Big Spender (N. Souquet), which shifted in. Both B. Vale and N. Souquet were reprimanded under AR137(a) for careless riding. RACE 5: Open Handicap 1000m: Lazyaxl- Raced wide throughout. Rider B. Vale stated his mount travelled fairly throughout despite being obliged to race wide. He added his mount failed to quicken and in his opinion would be suited over a longer distance. A post-race veterinary examination did not detect any abnormalities. For Me Dad- Steadied approaching the winning post when crowded to the inside of Squeaky Squirrel (M. Travers). M. Travers was advised to exercise more care. Hill Spy- Slow to begin. RACE 6: Benchmark 55 Handicap 1600m: Cod Rock- Rider M. Taylor(a) accidently dropped her whip near the 200m. Poet s Dash- Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. When questioned regarding his riding over the final 500m R. Bensley stated that due to the slow tempo of the event his mount had proved difficult to settle. He added passing the 400m when Flying Fragments rolled out slightly he attempted to improve to the inside of that gelding. He further added before he was able to establish the run Flying Fragments shifted back in resulting in him becoming held up and unable to improve. He added when runners went forward around him he shifted his mount outwards near the 200m but was then disappointed for a run between Striking Lago and Kaotika before being able to obtain clear running passing the 100m. His explanations were noted. Yet Tobe Convinced- Slow to begin. RACE 7: Class 2 Handicap 1300m: Just Stellar- Slow to begin. Got its head up while racing keenly in the early and middle stages. Raced wide throughout. Nothing But a Saga- Checked near the 200m when crowded to the inside of Manner Sensation (A. Masters) which laid in and away from Inchcape Rock. A. Masters was reprimanded for careless riding under AR137(a). Upside Rock- Slow to begin and crowded shortly after. Quatre Belle- Slow to begin and crowded shortly after.
Inchcape Rock- Rider M. Cahill and Co-Trainer J. Nisbet were each fined $50 under AR175(k) for their part in the gelding being presented to the mounting yard with the incorrect saddlecloth number. Raced very keenly in the early and middle stages and was continually restrained off heels. The racing manners of the gelding were brought to the attention of Co-Trainer Mr J. Nisbet. Pay the Ones- Eased on two occasions near the 1000m when racing unnecessarily tight to the inside of Nothing But a Saga (B. Loy). B. Loy was advised to exercise more care. Held up and unable to improve between the 400m and 250m. Manner Sensation- Eased passing the 200m when Inchcape Rock (M. Cahill) shifted in when not quite clear. M. Cahill was advised to exercise more care. Summary of whip use: Stewards noted the following riders exceeded the permitted strikes with the whip prior to the 100m under AR137A(5)(a)(ii). Race 3 R. Bensley (Class Clown) 7 strikes Bearing in mind the totality of the whip use, no action was taken.
