CCC Welcomes New January Members Daniel Wardrop ~ Associate Ricardo Hagood ~ Jr. Executive Jeremy Gould ~ Social Dear Members, The first month of 2015 is in the books and we had no major surprises at Columbia Country Club. I will consider this a trend if we make it through the first quarter. We all got to enjoy one week of amazing weather that was a great tease for springtime but the rest of January was pretty much normal winter in the Southeast. So far, with a pretty normal winter, our golf course has held up well. While rain has slowed progress, Jim and his team are doing a great job of getting winter projects completed and the course should be well positioned for the spring growth season. We have increased the golf course budget for 2015 and this increase is earmarked for additional staff. On course staff will be increased from 4 to 6 people and we will be adding a 1st assistant. If we can maintain some continuity at this staff level it should translate into the ability to move faster with regular maintenance activities and a quicker recovery from those summer thunderstorms that like to come by on Thursday and Friday evenings during the summer. Lets all hope we make it through February with no especially crazy weather and set ourselves up for a really great spring golf season. The mild winter has continued here at C.C.C. The temperatures have remained moderate in January with only a few cold days. Last month several rain events have made the course soggy, but overall the fall and winter have been relatively dry. In January, the staff and I began repairs to several sink holes around the course. To date the repairs have went well and should be wrapped up within the week. Also, we have begun our tree removal projects and will continue throughout the month. In February, we will apply a herbicide to control winter weeds around the course. The mild winter forced us to change the chemicals we have sprayed in the past, but I am confident that we will obtain sufficient weed control despite the changes. We will also be rebuilding the cooler house and divot bottle holder at #6 and relocating them adjacent to the Black tee to make them more accessible to golfers playing the forward tees. I would like to remind everyone to be cautious of wet areas and to alter your traffic patterns during the late winter and spring, as it will aid in a quick recovery this spring. Thanks for everyone s support and we look forward to seeing you on the golf course! Golf Course Superintendent Did You Know? Columbia Country Club is situated on over 289 acres, 140 acres of turf and nearly 140 acres of forests. These vegetated areas help lower temperatures and reduce pollutants from runoff as well as airborne dust. The plant life at CCC produces enough oxygen to support 5,000 to 8,000 people and produces a cooling effect of 7-15 degrees over an urban setting. Now that a soggy January is behind us it is time to look forward to another busy golf season at CCC. The activity at the club this spring will be extremely busy, which is a good thing by the way. To date all Monday s are booked with outside events, bookings for Master s week play are well ahead of last year and member events will be in full swing, as well. I ask that you refer to the calendar of events so you are informed and can participate in the good times happening at your club. Below are the details on several club wide programs that benefit you the member as well as the club. Please take note of each and participate in as many as you can. We are poised for a great year; make plans to be a part of the excitement! General Manager / PGA Head Golf Professional Handicaps Your Handicap Fee for the 2015 Season was billed out in January. Please be reminded that in order to be eligible to play in ANY Club event, you will need to have an official Columbia CC handicap through our HCP Program. The charge is only $30 per person or $55 per couple (Juniors are Free!). You also need a minimum of TEN (10) scores in order to establish a verifiable handicap. Please check with the Golf Staff if you have any questions. GRIPS! Now is the time to take a look at those grips to see if they need to be changed. The tournament season is coming and there is no reason to have a club fly out of your hands during a round of golf. We have seen some results this past year of what can happen when this mistake occurs. Avoid this mistake by replacing your grips today.

Hi Ladies! Our Breakfast meeting will be held on Tuesday 17th February at 8.30am and this always is a great way to start the new golf year. Hopefully, weather permitting, after breakfast and the meeting we can go and play around of golf. Please don't forget to let the Pro Shop know you intend to play before you come in for breakfast. Keep a look out in the ladies locker room for a sign up sheet for this breakfast meeting. If you have not already paid, your LGA fees are now due, so please bring your check books to the meeting, also $2 for the Hole in One club, this could be your lucky year! Well done to Reggie, Jodi, Debbie and Nina for entering the Cross Country Scramble. I understand they had a lot of fun, or was that a lot of brandy?! Not sure, but either way they came in with a great score. I hope you all get to enjoy some golf this Valentine month and are looking forward to the new season. Have fun!
