Wolf Talk V olume 4, I s s u e 2 P a ge 5 Hockey Trainers: what do they do? They're paramedics, masseurs, psychologists and strength coaches. Trainers do everything from refilling water bottles to attending to virtually every knocked-out tooth. Their duties cover a broad spectrum, from preparing the team dressing room to distribution of team apparel, mopping, sweeping, laundry, repairing equipment, to keeping inventory stocked up. The Waterloo Wolves Major Midget AAA hockey team is considered to be the Flagship of Waterloo Minor Hockey. It is the last level in minor hockey for players before they move on to the Junior level. The Coaches and Trainer of this team attempt to operate it as a Junior level club in order to help players make the transition and help prepare them for what they will experience in Junior hockey. As in Junior, the Trainer has the responsibility of preparing the dressing room prior to games and practices, distribute apparel, towels, etc. The trainer disinfects player equipment after games/practices. Players are asked to have their equipment arranged in an organized fashion in their locker to help this process. Trainers are looked upon by everyone as the team medic and custodian. Each trainer has various levels of experience and education. A Trainer at the senior minor hockey level (Bantam/Midget) usually have their Intermediate certification or higher. Junior level clubs must have a Trainer with Intermediate or higher certification. When a player is injured, the trainer examines the player and makes the decision on whether or not the player can or should continue to play in that particular game/practice. Trainers work in the background to help the players stay in the game. They help to make the coach s job be a little less stressful and Trainers help each other too. They work hard to help their team win. Greg Henning, Head Trainer Where Are They Now? The 2011- Congratulations!
