November 8, 2007 CANADA S SCHMIDT FINISHES 6 TH TO BOWL WITH FINAL EIGHT AT BOWLING WORLD CUP Canada s Michael Schmidt of Winnipeg, Manitoba finished sixth to bowl with the top eight at the 43rd Annual Quibica/AMF Bowling World Cup. Schmidt bowled 1772 for his final eight games. 88 countries are participating at the 32 lane centre in the Kontinental Shopping Centre in historic St. Petersburg, Russia. Jason Belmonte of Australia finished first in the men s division, 252 pins ahead of the field. Ghislaine van der Tol, Netherlands led the women. Complete results are available at www.qubicaamf.com. The field is now cut to the top 8 men and women who will bowl a round robin of eight matches on Friday. The final three men and three women will be determined from the match play for the step-ladder final on Saturday. The televised step-ladder final will be the best two of three games. Player #2 will meet player #3 and winner will meet the #1 player for the title. Schmidt, the 2005 men s champion, is representing Canada for the third time. He finished 3 rd at the 2006 event. When asked how did it compare with the others? He said A lot tougher - the pattern is flatter and you must execute each shot. What are your thoughts going into tomorrow? I have some ground to make up to finish in the top three but I don t mind being the snake in the grass said Schmidt. Sandra Lowe of Lindsay, Ontario is coaching the Canadian representatives. Lowe is one of the head coaches for the Canadian Tenpin Federation and coached Schmidt and Ryan-Ciach to their wins in 2005 and 2003. The Canadian Tenpin Federation was formed in 1969 to qualify representatives for international competition.. CTF became a full membership organization on August 1, 2004 to deliver membership services to 40,000 plus registered tenpin bowlers in Canada. Membership services had previously been provided by the American Bowling Congress, the Women s International Bowling Congress and the Young American Bowling Alliance who were headquartered in the USA. November 4, 2007 AUSTRALIA AND KOREA ARE THE LEADERS AFTER DAY 1 OF THE BOWLING WORLD CUP Australia s Jason Belmonte and Sun Hee Lee of Korea are the leaders after the first day of competition at the Quibica/Amf Bowling World Cup. Canada s Michael Schmidt of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Monique Belanger, Estevan, Saskatchewan finished.28 th and 44 th respectively. Complete results are available at www.qubicaamf.com. All players will play six games each day until Wednesday. The top 24 men and women will bowl a further six games on Thursday when the cut will be made to the top eight men and eight women who will bowl a round robin of eight matches. The final three men and three women will be determined for the step-ladder final on Saturday. The televised step-ladder final will be the best two of three games. The 43 rd event is taking place at a 32-lane centre in the Continent Shopping Mall in the historic city of St Petersburg, from 3 to 11 November 2007. Representatives from 88 countries are competing. Schmidt, the 2005 men s champion, is representing Canada for the third time. He finished 3 rd at the 2006 event. Canada with seven champions, is tied with the Philippines for the second most Bowling World Cup wins. USA has 15. Kerrie Ryan-Ciach of Mississagua, Ontario was the latest Canadian woman to win the event. She won in 2003.. The Bowling Proprietors Association of Canada conduct the qualifying for the Quibica/AMF Bowling World Cup and the qualifier is sanctioned by the Canadian Tenpin Federation.. BPAC is the trade association for bowling centers in Canada. With 600 members across Canada, they conduct provincial qualifying events for the Bowling World Cup leading to national event. Schmidt and Belanger earned the right to represent Canada when they overcame the provincial qualifiers in the national event conducted by the BPAC last March at Gateway Entertainment in Edmonton Alberta. Sandra Lowe of Lindsay, Ontario is coaching the Canadian representatives. Lowe is one of the head coaches for the Canadian Tenpin Federation. The Canadian Tenpin Federation was formed in 1969 to qualify representatives for international competition.. CTF became a full membership organization on August 1, 2004 to deliver membership services to 40,000 plus registered tenpin bowlers in Canada. Membership services had previously been provided by the American Bowling Congress, the Women s International Bowling Congress and the Young American Bowling Alliance who were headquartered in the USA.
