Despite all of today s protocols and treatments, the cure rate for childhood cancer is still only 70-80 percent. So, every day, families like ours must look into the eyes of doctors in whose hands they have placed their precious children and hear, There is a 30 percent chance your child might not live. That is just not acceptable. It s not acceptable. And that s why we must keep working toward a cure. Even in the face of Frances Grace s relapse, we feel that God puts people in place to do things to work through things. With the help of Children s Hospital, our family and friends and with God s grace we will all make it through this difficult time and come out the better for Him. And we will continue our personal efforts to help find a cure for pediatric cancer. Last year, there were more than 1,400 patient visits to Children s Hospital by Mobile and Baldwin County children. Ninety-five percent of all Alabama pediatric cancer patients are treated at Children s. When you have had a child who has been touched by cancer, you know where your money and your efforts need to go because kids truly are our future. We started Tee Off Fore A Cure in 2006 to honor our daughter s life and to help other children in our area who are struggling with cancer. The first four tournaments raised over $165,000 combined. Their only child, Frances Grace, had been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Again. Almost six years earlier, the Hirs had learned of the first instance of their daughter s disease. At that time, they had no idea where to turn and only 20 minutes to make a huge decision. But because of a family member s previous experience and their own local pediatrician s guidance, they chose Children s Hospital of Alabama in Birmingham. Today, they are choosing Children s Hospital. Again. Only this time, they know so much more including the fact that the chemotherapy their daughter will need for the next two years is three times more toxic than what she had received as a toddler. The good news is that Frances Grace is in remission now and she, her parents and her doctors are continuing on with their efforts to restore her to full health. They also continue to fight to find a cure for pediatric cancer so that no child will ever have to go through what Frances Grace has endured. No child. Ever again.
