Interested in helping with shooting sports? The next Kansas Shooting Sports Instructor Training is scheduled, Friday - Sunday, April 6-8, 2018 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. This training plus a becoming a certfied 4-H volunteer is needed to work with youth at shooting sports practices. We couldn t continue this program without our great volunteers! Wildlife Contest A Wildlife Habitat Education Program Contest will be held April 25, 2018 at Claythorne Lodge in Columbus, KS. Jeri Geren, our wildlife agent, has put together some practice times for the Wildcat District. All sessions are being recorded and uploaded to our website for anyone to view at: www.wildcatdistrict.kstate.edu/featured-topics/wildlife/ Mondays from 4:00-5:00 p.m. @ Altamont Office March 5- Reptiles & Fish, Brian Traxon, Seth Lundgren March 19 - Trapping and Bow Hunting, David Geren April 2 - Habitat and Leaf Printing, Jacob Weber April 16th- Habitat Tour, Keith Jabben- MG County, April 23rd- Mock Contest April 25th- WHEP Contest (Claythorne Lodge) Fair Poultry Testing At each county fair, all poultry, except waterfowl, must show proof that they are pullorum-typhoid clean by presenting evidence that the entries were purchased from a U.S. Pullorum-Typhoid clean source and have been the only poultry on the premises (Presentation of a VS 9-3 Form received when poultry were purchased) OR presenting an official VS 9-2 Form, signed by an official testing agent showing the entries have had a negative pullorum-typhoid test within the proceeding 90 days. Official Testing Agents will be available to test poultry for FREE on the dates below. Youth are welcome to attend any county s testing but must bring the paperwork back to your local 4-H agent and fair superintendent. 4-H Camps Discovery Days May 29-June 1 on K-State s campus, Manhattan, KS. Come take classes on 4-H projects, careers, hobbies, community service and more! Don t forget about the dance and Call Hall Ice Cream! Camp is for 13-18 year old youth. Base price is $235 + class costs. Registration is open now and closes April 16th. Find more details on the KS 4-H website under events! Greenbush 4-H Camp ONLY open to CR, LB, and WL counties. (Montgomery County will participate in Cedar Bluff camp, more details coming soon.) Greenbush will be June 19-20th for 7-8 year olds. This overnight camp is a great starter camp for young youth. Estimated cost is $75. Local agents will be sending out more details soon! Sunny Hills, Rock Springs 4-H Center June 3-6, 2018 for youth who have completed 3rd -7th grade. Cost is $200 dollars. Youth stay in cabins and participate in events ranging from canoing to building robots. Check with your local agent for registration! COUNSELORS go to camp for FREE! We are always in need of good sophomore complete and up counselors! This looks great on scholarships, resumes, and college applications! Contact your Extension office as soon as possible if you are interested so you can complete a volunteer application! June 14 @ Labette Fairgrounds Poultry Barn 4-6 p.m. June 15 @ Riverside Park, Independence, KS 4-6 p.m. July 9 @ Crawford Fairgrounds Poultry Barn 4-6 p.m. Wilson County Testing Date TBA 4-H Alien Experience Kansas Cosmosphere is teaming up with 4-H to provide the Alien Experience April 6-7, 2018 in Hutchinson, KS. Cost will be $110 for youth and adults. This overnight experience includes meals and the stay. Program topics include: Is There Life Out There?, Black Holes planetarium program, Imaginary Martian/Mars Critters, plus much more. See a complete listing on the KS 4-H website! 3 Campference This is a great transitional camp for youth ages 12-14 and will be held June 26-29 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Camp features workshops about opportunities in the 4-H program and how to better interact with others! Camp fills up fast! Their community service project last year was building birdhouses for the courthouse lawn. Join us for breakfast and support Junior Leaders! Birdhouse Fundraising These would make a great mother s day gift! Thanks to a generous donation by Tractor Supply Company of Pittsburg, 4-H Council is selling a variety of bird feeders with a suggested donation, to raise money to help offset the 4-H participation fees. There are a wide variety of shapes, colors and sizes. We also have feeder scoops. Stop by the Extension Office and check them out! Pictures of the feeders can be found on our Wildcat Extension District 4-H page. Archery 2018 Crawford County 4 -H Archery will begin Sunday, April 15, 2018, 2:00 pm. Then we will meet every Sunday with the exception of holidays (Mother s Day, Memorial Day weekend, Father s Day, etc.). The first 3 Sundays (April 15, 22 & 29) will be for anyone new to the program and anyone who needs refreshing. Beginners MUST attend the range and safety orientation April 15th to participate in the program. Equipment will be provided for the beginners, please leave yours at home. The veterans will begin meeting on Sunday, May 6 at 4:00 pm. Meeting times may change as the season goes on. We will make those changes to practice times, when necessary, at practice. So, if you miss a practice, contact me to see if there are any changes. If you have questions or need more information, please call or text Dan Mosier II at 620-687-0643. Fairgrounds 4-H Council The next 4-H Council meeting will be on March 13, 2018 at the WEEC building behind the Extension Office in Altamont. We will eat at 6:30 p.m. (RSVP by March 12) and the meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. Nomination Day Nomination Day for small animals will be on May 5th at LCHS behind the gym. Once again you must have your animals tagged or pay $5.00 to have them tagged that day. Nomination papers are available on the website www.wildcatdistrict.k-state.edu or in the Extension Office. Please make sure they are completely filled out and signed by youth AND parents/guardians. If you are showing in the Beef Division you may NOT participate in the Bucket Calf Division and vice versa. Greenbush Camp Dates have changed! June 19-20 will be the only (one) night we have for the 7 & 8 year olds. Just save the date on your calendar and we will be sending out registration information in April. Sunny Hills Camp Camp will be June 3-6 at Rock Springs 4-H Center near Junction City, KS. You can attend this camp if you have completed 3rd grade 7th grade. Please save the dates if you are planning to attend as registration will be in your April newsletter. The cost of this camp is $200. Labette Co 4-H Council will pay $50 (after you return from camp), your club may help pay some of it and if you participated in Club Day and received a $25 coupon that can be used toward the cost of camp as well. We are always in need of good counselors high school sophomore complete and up. Please let the Extension office know if you are interested in being a counselor as you must complete the Volunteer Application process before you go to camp. Counselor training will start on June 2. Busy Beavers is in charge of the event this year. We will have a baked potato bar. Clubs will be asked to provide a minimum of 2 auction items. 4-H members and families should be thinking about what they might be able to donate or collect for the auction. Please remember funds from the dinner and auction are used to purchase fair awards, help with 4-H trips and activities, and help with expenses for events including building rentals, Achievement Banquet, Club Day ribbons and program fees for enrollment, etc. All donations to help with this fundraiser are appreciated! Flyers have been sent out and tickets are available to be picked up from club leaders. Wilson Co. Spring Beef Show The Spring Beef Show will start at 8:00 am on Saturday, April 7th with weigh in and the show starting at 10:00 am. All members with steers or heifers are encouraged to participate. Show is at the fairgrounds in Fredonia. Wilson County Livestock Judging Contest The Wilson County Livestock Judging Contest will be held Saturday afternoon May 5th following tag day.
