THE TOUR DE PIRINEXUS The inaugural Tour de Pirinexus takes place between 27 Sept and 1 Oct 2017 in collaboration with ABF The Soldiers Charity, raising vital funds for soldiers and veterans of the British Army. Taking place in Northernmost Catalonia, the 300km cycling circuit starts in Girona and straddles the Pyrenees mountain range twice, sending participants through Spain and France before dropping down to the beautiful Costa Brava coastline. This is set to be a charity challenge with a twist - although long days in the saddle are to be expected, the prospect of great local wine and food along the way will make it all the more rewarding and give those involved a memorable experience both on and off the bike. 27/09 - ARRIVE IN CATALONIA Arrive to Girona airport on Wednesday afternoon / evening and transfer directly to Hotel Palau de Bellavista, located a 5-minute walk up the hill from Girona s old town. Check in to your room before an event brief lead by Josep Maria Codina, Tony Wallington OBE, and Gareth Davies - your hosts for the next 4 days. Post-brief, get to know fellow riders over a typical 3-course Catalan dinner with wine in nearby restaurant, La Taverna del Angel. Head into the old quarters of Girona or return to the hotel and rest up before tomorrow s ride! 28/09 - STAGE ONE - LET THE FUN BEGIN! After breakfast and bike preparation, Stage One commences at 9AM on the iconic Pont de Pedra bridge in Girona s old town. From here, you will head east and then north through the Garrotxa National Park to Olot. The first climb of the tour awaits - a 15km ascent on peaceful backroads taking you to Coll de Santigosa at 1,064m. Descend into Sant Joan de les Abadesses before ending the day in the Pyrenees mountain village of Camprodon. Your hotel for the night, with extensive gardens and a pool, is located on the riverbank - a perfect spot to recover and refuel with a hearty Catalan meal and local wine before stage 2 of the challenge. 29/09 - STAGE TWO - THE CAMEL S BACK Depart from Camprodon and launch straight into the first climb of the day over the Col d Ares mountain pass. At 1,519m, it is the highest point of the Pirinexus route and your gateway into France. Following a dramatic descent into French Catalonia, wend your way along 40km of backroads before reentering Spain and attacking La Vajol, the penultimate climb of the day. Once over the top, the end of Stage Two is in sight - Hotel Can Xiquet awaits with stunning views across the Cap de Creus, the most easterly point of the Iberian Peninsula. Settle in for an evening of fine wine and divine food in one of Bacchus favourite spots in the Emporda. Distance: 93.4km Elevation Gain: 2,049m Click for route here 30/09 - STAGE THREE - HELLS ANGELS The final day of the Tour de Pirinexus! Cruise through the bucolic plains of Empordanet - medieval villages, vineyards, orchards and olive groves line much of the route. The terrain is a mixture of backroads and gravel paths - challenging in sections, less so in others. With 25km to go, dig in deep one last time and summit Els Angels, the final obstacle between you and a night of well-deserved indulgence in Girona. Dinner, wine and awards followed by Bacchanalian celebrations in town to cap off a great few days in Catalonia! Distance: 106.2km Elevation Gain: 1,115m Click for route here
01/10 - HOMEWARD BOUND Wake up in Girona and enjoy a leisurely breakfast overlooking the city. Relax by the pool or explore the old town if you have time. Bacchus will be providing transfers to the airport for your return flight home. ARE YOU UP FOR THE CHALLENGE? The Tour de Pirinexus has been designed to provide you with an epicurean experience of Catalonia and the opportunity to challenge yourself by choice.
