LASIK Wavefront Guided idesign LASIK with IntraLase What is LASIK? LASIK (Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis), commonly referred to as laser eye surgery or laser vision correction is a safe High Definition Vision solution for the treatment of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. LASIK has proven to be a very successful procedure, freeing millions of people of the daily dependence on glasses and contact lenses. When it comes to your vision, only the best will do. That s why Herzig Eye Institute remains committed to staying at the forefront of vision correction technology. There are many LASIK options to choose from, but, the industry s most advanced method is Wavefront Guided idesign LASIK with IntraLase. Preparing for Your LASIK procedure All patients begin with a complete surgical evaluation that involves a comprehensive eye examination, corneal topography and an idesign measurement described below. Once it has been determined that you are a good candidate for LASIK and you have decided to proceed, the next step is to choose a date. If you are a contact lens wearer, you must discontinue wearing your contact lenses for the appropriate time prior to the date of your laser procedure. Herzig Eye Institute 2014

Soft Lenses Soft Toric Lenses Gas Permeable Hard Lenses 1-2 weeks 2 weeks 3-4 weeks 8 weeks What is idesign Technology? idesign technology is a diagnostic and treatment approach that lets us take a precise measurement of your eyes like a fingerprint of your vision and then provide you with truly personalized vision correction. How does idesign Technology work? idesign technology uses a high definition sensor capturing over 1,200 data points from your eyes and is 25 times more accurate than standard measurements used for glasses or contact lenses. idesign creates a blueprint of your eyes precisely mapping and analyzing each eye s imperfections. In the diagnostic phase, this wavefront map is used to ensure your LASIK procedure addresses your unique vision imperfections mapping the entire optical path of your eye. In the treatment phase, the doctor uses information from the idesign wavefront map to perform a personalized vision correction using the Excimer laser. What makes the idesign System unique? No other wavefront-guided mapping tool measures vision imperfections like idesign technology. Better diagnoses gained through precise mapping, measuring and analyses means a truly individualized treatment plan and your best possible results.

The Day of Your LASIK procedure On the day of your procedure, you will be at Herzig Eye Institute for 1½ hours. Wear comfortable clothing and be sure to arrange to have someone drive you home after your procedure as your vision will be blurry. When you arrive for your LASIK procedure, you will be asked to review and sign a consent form. Measurements (corneal topography, idesign) will be repeated. Just before your LASIK procedure, the eye is numbed with topical anesthetic drops. The LASIK procedure LASIK is a delicate laser procedure that allows for a very predictable healing response. LASIK is actually a two-step process. In the first step, the surgeon creates a thin flap of corneal tissue with a Femtosecond laser called, IntraLase. Once the flap is complete, the surgeon can then proceed with the customized laser treatment to reshape the inner cornea of the eye using the cool energy of an Excimer laser. This twostep process allows for rapid visual recovery with little or no discomfort. The First Step - IntraLase IntraLase is a blade-free laser technology for performing the critical first step in the LASIK procedure: creating the corneal flap. Years ago, prior to IntraLase, this first step was done manually using a hand-held device with a blade, called a microkeratome. IntraLase is the most sophisticated and accurate technology for corneal flap creation available today and has given many patients greater confidence and assurance in choosing laser vision correction.

With IntraLase, the surgeon uses the precision of a computer-guided laser to create the corneal flap. IntraLase delivers micron-level accuracy giving the surgeon more control during the procedure and the ability to establish precise dimensions and thickness of the corneal flap, factors which are critical to a successful LASIK outcome. During this part of the procedure, your vision dims and becomes blurry for about a minute. The Second Step Excimer Laser After gently lifting the corneal flap, the surgeon uses the computerguided excimer laser to precisely reshape the cornea for corrected vision. Although the laser light is invisible, the laser makes a clicking sound as it gently reshapes the inner corneal layer to correct your vision. The AMO VISX Excimer laser includes two exclusive features: Variable Spot Scanning* and 3D ActiveTrak technologies, giving the doctor more options to further personalize your treatment. 3D ActiveTrak The unique 3D ActiveTrak element means that you no longer have to hold your eye perfectly still, which is a challenge for many patients. Instead, it automatically and instantaneously tracks the minute movements of your eye during the laser treatment. After the Procedure When the excimer treatment is finished, the surgeon will carefully reposition and align the flap to its original position. Once the corneal flap is laid back, within minutes natural forces hold it down on the cornea.

After the procedure, you will be escorted to a waiting area where you will relax for a few minutes. Your surgeon will then verify your cornea and ensure the flap has begun to heal before you go home. At the conclusion of the procedure you will be light sensitive and your vision will be blurry. Eye irritation and blurred vision may be present for the first few hours but most patients are comfortable after resting quietly with their eyes closed. Drops and medication will be provided to minimize any discomfort. Regular post-operative appointments are required after the procedure and will vary based on the rate of recovery. Antibiotic, antiinflammatory and lubricating drops will be provided to help achieve ideal healing. Post-Operative Examinations You will be seen at the following post-operative times: 1 day, 1 week and 1 month after your surgery. At the discretion of your doctor, additional post-operative appointments may be required. It is very important that you keep these appointments either at the Herzig Eye Institute or with your co-managing doctor. Post-Operative Restrictions Please refrain from swimming, gardening and hot tubs for 2 weeks after your surgery. Outcome & Results The LASIK procedure offers extremely fast recovery: within hours of the surgery, the flap has usually begun to heal. Most patients are able to resume day-to-day activities just 24 hours after the surgery. A temporary side effect of the procedure may include red eyes. Typically this redness resolves within 1 2 weeks. Vision is usually quite good after 24 hours but, occasionally it can take a little longer to reach your best vision.

Lifetime Commitment Your original LASIK procedure is backed by the Herzig Eye Institute Lifetime Commitment. If an additional procedure is deemed medically necessary, it will be performed at no additional cost. You must return for the required number of post-op exams and maintain regular eye examinations with the ophthalmologist or optometrist managing your care. The Herzig Eye Institute surgeons and doctors are committed to providing you with your best possible vision. Our pricing structure is as simple and straight-forward as our Lifetime Commitment to you.
