Four Valleys Community School Summer Program for Kids 2016 Serving Girdwood, Bird, Indian, and Portage for over 35 years

Summer Playground Summer Playground for Preschool Ages Ages 3, 4, and 5 Enjoy supervised games, outdoor activities, sports and art projects. Structured fun for kids aged 3, 4, and 5 going into Kindergarten! Must be potty trained. Groupings may be adjusted after registration. Bring a snack, and dress for indoor and outdoor fun! Mondays and Wednesdays, June 6 July 6 9:30am Noon Girdwood Community Room Fee: $150 Summer Playground for Primary Ages Grades 1st 3rd Enjoy supervised games, outdoor activities, sports and art projects. Mondays and Wednesdays, June 6 July 6, 1pm 4pm Girdwood Community Room Fee: $150 TWO-DAY INTENSIVES small groups and experienced instructors (listed by date) Wilderness Survival Intensive Grades 4th 6th This intensive will introduce outdoor survival basics such as: water, shelter, first aid, navigation, clothing, food, etc. Campers will learn water catching and filtration techniques using hands on activities. Campers will also have the opportunity to build their own outdoor shelters! Compass navigation will be demonstrated through fun scavenger hunts, compass games, and even geocaching. This fun and educational activities will help better prepare campers in the event of a home fire or wildfire. Mon & Wed June 6th & 8th 10am 4pm Location TBA Fee: $110 Bikes and Boards Sports Intensive Grades 3rd 6th Bikes and boards introduces both team sports and individual sports throughout 2 days of camp. Beginning with team bonding exercises on hikes this camp will provide fun, healthy, and educational opportunities through lessons in sports. Skateboarding and Biking will be a focus on Day 2. Six spots in skateboarding and six spots in mountain biking, maximum. Students will need to bring their own skateboard or bicycle along with proper padding gear. Helmets will be required to participate. Mon & Wed June 13th and June 15th 10am 4pm Location TBA Fee: $110

Exploration Intensive Grades 3rd 6th Using our own backyards here in the four valleys, campers will get the opportunity to learn about invasive species, local fauna, composting, and will even get the opportunity to spend a day at the Forget Me Not nursery! Daily hikes will provide hands on educational opportunities in a fun and healthy way Let's get active and explore the outdoors! Campers will need to bring their own bike, pencils, paper, bug spray, sunscreen, and Lunch. Snacks will be provided. Mon & Wed June 20th and 22nd 10am 4pm Location TBA Fee: $110 Animals and Art Intensive Grades 3rd 6th Kids will explore the animal kingdom through a variety of adventures and art provided throughout this intensive. From our dogs and cats to wolverine and bears there will be all kinds of animals to learn about! Using exploration skills to find signs of animals, students will have the opportunity to leave with their own homemade animal track. We will also learn about the different species native to our area using our local trails throughout Girdwood. Mon & Wed June 27th and 29th 10am 4pm Location TBA Fee: $110 Rivers and Hydrology Intensive Grades 4th 6th This intensive is all about water! Kids will learn the importance of one of earth's most natural resources by exploring Winner Creek to the hand tram, building water boats, and experimenting with watermelon! Other fun experiments and crafts will be incorporated into this water themed camp. We will spend one day floating Portage Creek with Chugach Adventures. This cost is included in the class price. Mon & Wed July 4th and 6th 10am 4pm Location TBA Fee: $175 Salmon and Science Intensive Grades k 3rd Day 1 will begin with hiking local trails in Girdwood while studying the local ecology. A few science experiments are must haves in this camp! This camp will not only give campers a very hands on approach when learning about salmon; but we will also get to view local wildlife up close at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center! Students will learn about the 5 different types of salmon and the different types of flies for catching salmon, will paint a salmon and print it on paper, and even watch the AWCC bears eat salmon that students will have dissected, studied, and made into enrichment for the AWCC animals. Drop off and pick up on July 11th will be at the softball field in Girdwood. Drop off and pick up will be at the AWCC on July 13th. Entry into the AWCC is covered in camp cost. Students should bring with them their own bike/helmet (for day 1 of camp only) lunch, journal, pen/pencils, sunscreen/bug spray for camp. Mon & Wed, July 11th & 13th, 1pm 4pm Girdwood Ball Field/ AWCC Fee: $60

Girdwood Olympic Games for K-3rd and 4th-6th The summer Olympics are nearly here! In order to get ready for these events we are having our own summer version of the Olympic games here in Girdwood! Events include Olympic Ring Hoopla, relay races, obstacle courses, and balloon volleyball, just to name a few. Crafts focused around Olympic history are also incorporated into this fun, hands on, energy burning camp! Monday July 25th Thursday July 28th K 3rd will meet 9am noon 4th 6th will meet 1pm 4pm Fee: $120

TENNIS SMASH Camp Tennis Camp I Morning Session Ages 8 17 SMASH Camp is a summer tennis camp focusing on fundamentals,movement, and FUN! This camp's main objectives are to teach the game of tennis to beginners, intermediate, and advanced kids from ages 8 17 years old. SMASH Camp is a movement based tennis camp where all drills, live ball drills, and tennis games are designed to keep the students engaged and constantly moving! This camp is played rain or shine. On the clear and dry days we are on the tennis courts with tennis being the primary focus. On the rainy days we are out on the nearby fields playing games such as kickball, capture the flag, spike ball, tennis baseball, and many other movement based games. Instructor and tennis pro Aaron Haines firmly believes, "In learning the game of tennis I believe that constant applied learning is essential in the development of a tennis player." SMASH Camp will be located at the Girdwood Tennis courts. Tennis for Little Smashers is for kids ages 5, 6, and 7. Learn tennis in a fun, fast paced, and super active environment. This tennis class will teach the basic fundamentals and skills needed to play the game of tennis in way that will have the kids itching for more! Warning: after attending, your child will want more, more, and more TENNIS! From forehand to backhand to the overhead SMASH, your child will not be disappointed becoming a Little Smasher! A R T C A M P Girdwood Fine Arts Camp was established in 1987, and provides a fast paced introduction to a variety of art media and professional artist styles. Your child will work with guest artists and volunteers to explore different techniques and styles, while fully immersing themselves in creativity. This camp provides a truly fun and dynamic experience that will spark creativity, engagement, exploration and individual expression. The program welcomes each young artist as a unique individual bursting with potential. The Girdwood Fine Arts Camp will be held M F, August 1st 12th at the Challenge Alaska Building. We offer both one week and two week camps for both primary (ages 5 8) and intermediate (ages 9 18) levels. This camp is operated by the Girdwood Art Institute, a local non profit based in Girdwood. FVCS Summer Soccer Program Soccer Cubs (Ages 4 and 5) Join experienced coaches Erin and Laura this summer on the Arlberg soccer field and have fun playing lots of different games, fun drills, and friendly soccer matches. Learn to dribble, pass and shoot while also meeting new teammates! Soccer players will also be given a t shirt to keep if they are registered BEFORE May 16th. Also included in this fun summer season is a mid season tournament on Saturday June 25th at 10am and a final tournament at the end of the season on Saturday July 16th at 10am. This summer soccer camp will be led by FVCS Coaches Erin and Laura with help from parent volunteers. Please notify FVCS if you are interested in volunteering. Coach Erin has been playing soccer for nearly 17 years. Erin as played competitively since the age of 10 and played 4 years of Division 1 college soccer at McNeese State University. Coach Laura has been playing soccer since the age of 5! Laura has experience from traveling soccer teams, 4 years of High School soccer (3 years on varsity), and also has experience coaching for summer camps. Both Laura and Erin will bring their high energy and love for this sport to the FVCS soccer camps this summer. (NOTE you must register by May 16th to receive a team shirt).***register early! FVCS Board allocates funds each year toward a scholarship program. In addition the Girdwood Forest Fair Committee has donated funds to be used during 2016 to provide financial aid to participate in FVCS classes and programs. Your child may qualify to have the registration fee reduced or waived. Fee waiver or reduction will be dependent on available funds. Applicants will be notified within 10 business days.
