OPENING SHOT Jan Habig and co-driver Robert Paisley (Ford Fiesta S2000) backed up their win on the Toyota Gauteng Dealer Rally with second place on this past weekend s Volkswagen Rally. Ford Fiesta S2000s have claimed four of four victories in the South African Rally Championship thus far in 2013. Mark Cronje/Robin Houghton are leading the Championship thus far in their M-Sport built machine, and will need to fend off Habig on next month s Gauteng Rally to claim their fourth win of the season... FORD DOMINATES SOUTH AFRICA S VOLKSWAGEN RALLY Words: Handbrakes & Hairpins Pictures: Evan Rothman, Motorpics

At Volkswagen Motorsport South Africa s home event - and on their title sponsorship event - the Volkswagen Rally, the four-car squad will not look back on this past weekend s event too fondly. Not only was it a Ford one-two with a Toyota in third and fourth place overall, but fifth place was the highest placing the Volkswagen factory team could muster. Reigning South African Rally Champions Mark Cronje and Robin Houghton (Ford Dealer Team Fiesta S2000) claimed their third win from four rallies thus far in 2013, and did so in remarkable fashion. The Ford privateers have dominated not only rallies but stages in their pursuit of victory over the past two seasons. Cronje is riding the crest of a wave of confidence, and his driving has matured into a peerless form in 2013. Is this the strongest pairing in South African rallying in years? We think so! Cronje/Houghton finished well clear of Jan Habig and Robert Paisley (Basil Read Ford Fiesta S2000), to pull ahead of the former multiple South African champions in the Championship standings. The fight was on in the Longmore Forests, as only one point separated these two crews going into this rally... Next month s event will undoubtedly see Habig re-challenge Cronje for victory in a hammer-and-tongs battle once more. The two Ford crews dominated proceedings from start to finish and were never truly hassled by their rivals. The early demise of Johnny Gemmell/Carolyn Swan (Castrol Team Toyota Yaris S2000) due to mechanical problems put paid to a three-way fight, but the factory Toyota squad has made their presence felt with this new rally machine! Giniel de Villiers/Greg Godrich claimed the final podium position in their Imperial Toyota Yaris S2000, hassled along to the finish by the S2000 Challenge pairing of Jean- Pierre Damseaux/Hilton Auffray (Team TOTAL Toyota Auris S2000), who won the S2000 Challenge Class honours with their fourth place overall in their older spec S2000 racer. Behind Hergen Fekken/Pierre Arries (Volkswagen Sasolracing Polo S2000), who had another frustrating weekend after showing strong signs of challenging for a podium position, were team-mates Enzo Kuun/Doug Judd. They were locked in a Day Two battle with Gemmell, as both crews fought their way up the leader board. Gemmell s mechanical woes saw him settle for seventh place overall. Castrol Team Toyota team-mates Leeroy Poulter/ Elvene Coetzee were lying in third position overall when their Toyota Yaris S2000 s lower control arm broke and saw them drop down the leader board. In Longmore Forest, where the majority of the stages and competitive distance was held, it was the smooth and swift driving of Cronje that showcased this businessman s eye for picking the fastest lines through turns. Habig s speed is closing in on Cronje s as he acclimatizes to his new rally weapon, and a head-to-head battle in the coming events will be a thriller. Despite the best efforts of Volkswagen s rally crews, they are not able to stay in the fight for podiums. A serious rethink of their Polo S2000s is needed to break this cycle of mechanical gremlins. In the S2000 Challenge Class, which has provided a great show of rallying action in 2013, it was Damseaux/ Auffray who set the pace and were never truly threatened at the top of the leader board. They were followed to the finish line by locals Morne Janse van Rensburg/Rikus Fourie (GC Diesel Racing Volkswagen Polo Vivo S2000) and Nic van

der Westhuizen/Stefan Cilliers (SA Earthworks Toyota Auris S2000). Mohammed Moosa/Andre Vermeulen (Team TOTAL Toyota Auris S2000) were struck with two punctures on Day One to cost them over a minute of stage time to their rivals, but they were comfortable in second place. Day Two saw them resurgent on the morning s opening stages and powered to within striking distance of their team-mates, and settled into a rhythm to take them to the finish at Kings Beach. Unfortunately, off the start line of SS12, the event s penultimate stage and final gravel test, their car snapped a driveshaft and limped through the stage dropping over minutes to their rivals and seeing them crawl home to claim fourth place. The S2000 Challenge Class points leaders Gugu Zulu and Carl Peskin (Volkswagen Sasolracing Polo Vivo S2000), for they were ruled out of the event on Day Two with a broken gearbox. Running in third place, they have now a big job at hand to regain the Class Championship lead back. Winners of Class S1600 were Clint Weston and Christof Snyders (Reef Tankers Citroen C2 R2 Max), enjoying a tremendous weekend. They were handed a 01min 40sec time penalty on Day One, but not only did they reel this in, they stormed up the leader board to claim a deserving win. Second place went to Craig Trott/Janine Lourens (Team TOTAL Toyota RunX S1600)m with Matthew Vacy-Lyle/Schalk van Heerden (Fragram Tools TOyota RunX S1600) taking the final podium position. The next round of the South African National Rally Championship is the Gauteng Rally on 16-17 August. H&H Final Overall Classification: 01) M. Cronje/R. THRILLING FOURTH AUTO24 RALLY ESTONIA WOWS FANS Words: Handbrakes & Hairpins Picture: Janus Ree, Timo Anis

With the world s rally media descended upon the small town of Otepää in Estonia on 19-20 July, it was a festival of all things that makes this sport so very fantastic. The fourth edition of the auto24 Rally Estonia formed a round of the Estonian, Latvian, NEZ, Baltic and FIA European Historic Rally Sporting Championship. Altough this is a new event in the motorsport world, it does boast an impressive winners list: Markko Märtin (2010) and Mads Ostberg (2011 and 2012). After the Norwegian WRC star not in action in 2013, the trophy returned back to Estonian soil... An intense battle raged from the Shakedown Stage to the very last stage, with Georg Gross/Raigo Mölder (Ford Focus RS WRC) leading the field, but hounded every kilometre by Karl Kruuda/Martin Järveoja and Martin Kangur/ Andres Ots in their identical Ford Fiesta R5 weapons. Alexy Lukyanuk/Alexey Arnautov (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX) were on the pace, and proved a thorn in the side of the Ford crews from the get-go. Gross tackled the event s nine stages with courage, and powered to the lead at the end of Day One. Serving as road sweeper on Day Two s opening tests, however, did slow his pace. He proved to have had his oats for breakfast, as he maanged to keep the closing Fiesta R5 of Kruuda behind him, to win with a lead of 39.4 seconds. For Gross and co-driver Mõlder, victory in this year s auto24 Rally Estonia brought them not only the traditional event trophy, but also helmets designed Tribilia Design and presented by Mr. Ari Vatanen, president of Estonian Autosport Union and former World Rally Champion.

Said Gross: We are happy; the whole weekend, everything worked well. Ott Tänak and the OT Racing team did a good job on the car. This is for us very important and special victory. Kruuda/Järveoja s second place made history as it was the first podium for the brand-new Ford Fiesta R5. The fight between the Fiesta R5s and the Lancer Evo IX of Lukyanuk stepped up a gear when Kangur stumbled and dropped down the leader board. This left Lukyanuk with an opportunity to finish second, and he challenged Kruuda. In a ding-dong battle, Kruuda was able to outpace Lukyanuk in the penultimate stage to claim second place 02.4sec! In the 2WD Class, Junior WRC competitors Sander Pärn/Ken Järveoja were fastest, as the gap between them and the second place crew of Rainer and Rauno Rohtmets was nearly two minutes at the end of the rally. In the National Class, the winners were Ago and Kalle Aho with their sideways BMW M3. The auto24 Rally Estonia was also a round of FIA European Historic Rally Sporting Championship, and everyone s eyes were on Jari-Matti Latvala and his Audi Quattro. Unfortunately, Jari-Matti and his co-driver Asko Sairanen lost time when they broke a gear lever of Audi. Said Jari-Matti Latvala: When the gear lever broke, we were in neutral. So it took some time to find the way to put it into third gear. Then we managed to put the gear in, and continued. But it was good fun to drive this car here. I like those fast roads and jumps. We have to come back next year. The fastest in the Historics Class were Ville Silvasti/Jonne Haltunen driving Porsche 911 RS. They were also winners of Category 2. Category 1 winers were Pasi Koskinen/Jouni Niutanen (Ford Escort GT 1300), Categrory 3 winners were Mika Turkki/Timo Hantunen (Opel Ascona 400) and Category 4 saw Valter Jensen/Erik Pedersen (Lancia 037) claim honours. The FIA European Rally Championship (ERC) resumes with its seventh round this weekend, the Sibiu Rally in Romania. A new addition to the ERC for 2013, the Sibiu Rally is a truly spectacular event with a mixture of gravel and asphalt stages, including some being run at night. And to underline the popularity of the Transylvania event and the ERC, organisers were one entry short of reaching full capacity. Sibiu, located in the centre of Romania, oozes history and culture. Records of its existence date back to 1191, while it was designated European Capital of Culture in 2007. It makes for one of the most scenic Service Parks in international rallying with quaint historic buildings lining the Piața Mare, a large square in Sibiu where it s located. The near-capacity Sibiu Rally entry is awash with national champions and former event winners. Jan Kopecký, the series Championship leader and current Czech titleholder, heads the list of registrations in a factory Skoda Fabia S2000. He will face opposition from former French and multiple Polish champion Bryan Bouffier and current Romanian champion François Delecour. Like Bouffier, Delecour will line up in a Peugeot 207 S2000. Jean-Michel Raoux, the IRC 2WD champion of 2011, will also rely on Peugeot power, while Yuan-Hu Lin holds the Taiwan rally crown and will compete in a Romanian-built Dacia Logan. Of the former event winners in action, Marco Tempestini steps up from his regular Subaru Impreza to a Fabia for his home round of the ERC. Gergo Szabo and Bogdan Marisca, who have also triumphed in Sibiu in the past, will be among the contenders for ERC Production Car Cup glory where their rivals will include double Production Car world champion Toshi Arai, who will jet in from Japan to drive an Impreza R4 STI for the occasion, and Vitaliy Pushkar, the production class winner in Sibiu last season in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X. The competition starts in earnest with the Qualifying Stage from 10h00 on Thursday 25 July. Following two runs of Free Practice at Sibiu s rallycross circuit from 08h00, priority drivers get one run over the 3.42km course to set their best time. The fastest driver will then get to choose their starting position for leg one first with the second fastest driver next to make their selection and so on until all priority drivers have made their choice. Road position can be pivotal to the outcome of dry gravel rallies as drivers will be eager to run further down the order to benefit from a clean and stable stage surface that s been swept clear of loose gravel. There will be night fever in Romania with two tests Paltiniş and Şanta run under the cover of darkness on Friday s leg, which features seven stages over a competitive distance of 101.80km. To increase the challenge facing drivers and the spectacle for the fans, the 10km of Paltiniş is on asphalt, which drivers will tackle with gravel tyres and settings. Saturday s route includes two more Tarmac stages, plus the monster Gâtu Berbecului, which at 30km is the longest of the 14-stage event and is run twice. Ekaterina Stratieva and Molly Taylor, currently first and second in the ERC Ladies Trophy standings, will be competing in Sibiu and for the first time. Stratieva heads the scores by four points from Taylor but admits her lack of gravel experience could be a hindrance.
