Meet Mark Brown Vice Chair of Hosting This month s featured Host Committee member is Mark Brown, Vice Chair of Hosting. His portfolio includes Lounges, Information Services & Decorating, and Statisticians & Timing. In addition he will be Co-Chairing the 50/50 Draw Committee for the Event. What do you do when you are not volunteering? One of my life's passions has been the ongoing success of the Granite Club. So volunteering as the Club President, Chair of the Management Committee, bookkeeper and pretty much in any other capacity that requires my attention leaves little time for other non-secular interests. As owner operator of MRB Finance, a bookkeeping and accounting business, my plate is full. Where & When did you throw your first curling rock and where do you curl today? I threw my first rock at the North Bay Granite Club in the Fall of 1974 in the high school league. My father played so the sport was available to try. I enjoyed the game immediately and knew that I had found my niche as far as a recreational activity was concerned. I remain a member of the North Bay Granite Club, curling a minimum of three times a week and participate in many bonspiels and competitive play downs. What s your biggest achievement in curling? It was being awarded the inaugural John Toswell Award, by the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame and being recognized and awarded an honorary life membership to the Northern Ontario Curling Association both in 2016. A very humbling experience for working in a sport that has given so much to me. Why volunteer for the Ford Worlds and what is your expectation from the experience? Without hesitation I accepted the opportunity to be one of the three Vice Chairs for the Ford World Women's World Curling Championship in order to secure the future of curling in North Bay and area. This is from a financial perspective and more importantly in order to expose our community to the sport that I have grown to love over the years. My hope is that the community will be motivated to become participants at the local level and not just spectators of this incredible event. 400 volunteers have signed up to help host the Ford Worlds, what can they expect? I certainly hope that the 400 volunteers who have so unselfishly stepped forward to claim a key role in the overall success of this event will bank memories and create enduring friendships, that will last a lifetime. It has been often said that curling is the true test of sportsmanship. I also feel it is the catalyst for bonding lifelong friends. Let s Put Some Rocks in their Socks!
