Message from Steve With some fresh snow already accumulating on the mountain tops early this fall, we are excited for another winter season quickly approaching! Following a truly spectacular summer, filled with sunshine and warm weather, our teams are now hard at work focusing on creating another great winter season at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. Opening day for the 2012/2013 winter season is already less than 50 days away! Thank you to Mike and Aleks Macklem for their hard work in bringing the Cycle Cross events to Kicking Horse this past summer. Additionally, thank you to all the homeowners who volunteered and participated in these events. This year, I am pleased to a n n o u n c e s o m e n e w b a s e improvements along with key customer programs that are sure to improve the overall resort experience. It s been a busy and successful fall for our development team, with Kicking Horse Mountain Resort undergoing some esthetic changes in the plaza this past month. The log building, pictured in the photo below, now located at the base of the mountain will be home to the new site of our Retail centre, Kicking Horse Mountain Sports. This improved shop will provide a chic and central location for everything new and returning guests need to keep stylish on the slopes this winter! We are looking forward to our first full powder season as a part of the Resorts of the Canadian Rockies. Joining one of the premier ski resort operating companies in North America, alongside our western sister resorts Fernie, Kimberly & Nakiska, has opened up larger skiing opportunities for all. Both the RCR Rockies Pass and the Super Pass allow everyone to reap the powder benefits of multiple resorts within the RCR family. Our individual Kicking Horse Resort Pass continues and is on sale as well. All the information and details on passes can be found on the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort or Resorts of the Canadian Rockies websites. Winter officially kicks off with our opening weekend on December 8th. I would like to thank everyone for a terrific summer season and hope to see you all this winter! Steve Paccagnan President, KHMR This past summer highlighted successful family focused weekends including our Canada Day festivities, hosting the Red Barn Petting Zoo and Flying W Horseback Riding on resort. Both the Kicking Horse Cup and the Western Open drew significant audiences and families alike, helping to further establish Kicking Horse Mountain Resort as one of the premier downhill mountain biking destinations. New Developments on Resort Kicking Horse Mountain Resort has been working on a new development of 26 semi-detached houses; the development is called The Cedars. Recently, the resort received approval from the Ministry of Transport to continue with the development. Kicking Horse is planning to launch this development early next year and will provide updates as the project develops over the next couple of months A number of family zone improvements have been made for the upcoming season. The new ice skating surface has increased by over 100%. The new surface is 44 x 70 and should prove to be a great venue for families and the occasional 3 on 3 hockey challenge. In addition, the fire pit has been relocated and rebuilt with additional seating for those who wish to rest their legs and toast up a marshmallow with the kids! Summer Grooming Update British Ski + Board Show - NEC Birmingham, October 26 28 Ski and Snowboard Show - Earls Court 2, October 31 November 4 The Kicking Horse Mountain Resort team has been hard at working preparing for the upcoming winter season, with considerable grooming undertaken. Being a part of the Resorts of the Canadian Rockies family has allowed our staff the opportunity to work in conjunction with the larger grass-cutting team and machines provided by RCR, resulting in an even better final product. Crews have been working since early August to enhance the lower mountain beginner and intermediate ski trails by cutting slide alder, willow and knocking down old stumps and large rocks from key ski trails including Wiley, Grizzly Pay, Upper Stellar Jay, Buffalo Jump, Porcupine, Kicking Horse, Wapiti and Show Off. Over 900 acres have been cleared to date! M O U N T A I N L I V I N G 3
Winter Events and Homeowner Program As we shift gear into another exciting winter, I wanted to take this opportunity to rewind the tape for a quick flash back on our successful summer. To enhance our calendar and diversify our panel of activities, we introduced a couple of new events on resort, including The Kicking Horse Cup a biking event series championed with maestria by the Macklem clan and a new format for Labor Day Weekend. The Hill Climb, Dark Horse Enduro and Cyclocross built an unprecedented momentum across the resort while driving new visitors to experience the best of what KHMR offered this summer. We hope to see them back this winter to sneak some turns in our legendary champagne powder. KHMR extends a huge round of thank you s to Aleks, Mike and their sponsors for delivering a high end production and putting us on the map of road and cross racing. August long weekend, The Western Open and SE Racing put on a terrific show! Hosting an event of this magnitude offered us a solid platform to showcase our brand and promote our resort: we had participants from all over BC & AB, Manitoba and the US. Visitors returned home with an experience we're working on building here every day - that of a world class destination. Media coverage has never been that high and consistent, showing the country our Bike Park s new upgrades and improvements. Today, I m thrilled to present the 2012/2013 Winter Events Calendar and officially announce that the Homeowner Events program is back; dates will be communicated in the next issue early November. New and exciting for the coming winter, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort will host its Kick-Off Festival on December 8 th and 9 th. There will be a stack of activities over the weekend for families to take part in, while sneaking some turns in the white stuff. Surfing on last year s success, we ll celebrate our Community Appreciation Day, providing free ski day tickets for locals on Sunday. Mark your calendars, reserve the date and join us for an awesome weekend! Also to look forward to this December, Brand Night will be the homeowners occasion to get together and celebrate the beginning of a new winter in style. Our very popular First Tracks program will continue this season as well. We invite you to bring your friends and family to join the fun! I look forwarding to seeing you all very soon on resort. Boo Prepares for Winter The shorter days, colder nights, and occasional dustings of snow that make skiers and snowboarders anticipate the upcoming winter is having the same effect on Boo. He just goes about his preparations differently. For the past couple of months he has been in a state of hyperphagia, meaning he eats constantly. Since he won't eat or drink during the entire five months of his winter dormancy, he is bulking up while he can. He's noticeably larger than earlier in the summer, with a sagging belly and considerably more jiggle. Additionally, Boo's metabolism is slowing down so he is more lethargic than usual, often stretching out and napping in plain view. His winter den is ready and waiting. Sometime during the next three to four weeks he will go inside and disappear until spring. Sweet dreams, Boo. Since Boo and his wild cousins are literally hungry like bears, the staff at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort would like to remind everyone to please keep any bear attractants inside. This will minimize bear-human conflicts keeping the community of Golden safe as well as keeping bears wild and safe! Also please be aware of bears while hiking, there is greater activity because of their increased eating, sightings are on the rise.
