ISSUE #12 WHAT S HAPPENING IN THE WORLD OF SOCCER CANADA MAKES HISTORY AT RIO 2016 AFTER BACK TO BACK OLYMPIC MEDALS The 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia will be the 21st FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial international football tournament contested by the Men's National Teams off the member associations of FIFA. It is scheduled to take place in Russia from June 14 to July 15, 2018, after thee country was awarded the hosting rights on December 2, 2010. This will be the first World Cup ever held in Eastern Europe, and the first held in Europe since Germany hosted the prestigious event back in 2006. The final tournament will involve 32 national teams, which include 31 teamss determined throughh qualifying competitions and the automatically qualified host team. A total of 64 matches will be played in 12 venues located in 111 cities. The final will take place on July 15 in Moscow at the Luzhniki Stadium (pictured below) In 1992, the competition replaced the European Champion Clubs Cup which had run since 1955. Pre 1992 competition was initially a straight knockout tournament open only to the champion club of each country. Since 1990, a UEFA international referee cannot exceed thee age of 45 years. The age limit was established to ensure an elite level of fitness. Any team that wins the Champions League 3 years in a row or 5 times overall wins the right to retain a full sized replica off the trophy. Six clubs have earned this honour so far: Real Madrid, Ajax, Bayern Munich, Milan, Liverpool, and Barcelona. Real Madrid is the most successful club in the competition s history, having won the tournament ten times. Spanish clubs have accumulated the highest number of victories (15 wins), followed by England and Italy (12 wins apiece). English teams weree banned from the UEFA Champions League between 1986 and 1991. In 2006 Arsenal produced the best defensive effort in the history of the UEFA Champions League going 10 games without conceding a goal. Both cities will host youth competitions in October, with the t Fredericton District Soccer Association awarded the U 17 Cup C and the Calgary Minor Soccer Association awarded the U 15 Cup. "We welcome Calgary and Fredericton as host cities and thank our provincial soccer associationss in their support of the Sport Chek National Championships," said Victor Montagliani, Canada Soccerr President. "We look forward to collaborating within our o soccerr communities to deliver an excellent soccer experience for our players, coaches, and officials." Fredericton, New Brunswick is hosting their first Canada Soccer youth competition since 2011 while Calgary, Alberta is hosting their first Canada Soccer youth competition since 2002. Thiss is the first edition with the change in format back to U 15 and U 17 age categories. Host city for Canada Soccer's Sport Chek National Championships senior competitions the Challenge Trophy & Jubileee Trophy will be announced in the near future. Both competitions will be hosted in British Columbia for the first time since 2006. Canadaa Soccer's Sport Chek National Championships have served as the country's premier amateur competition for more than 1001 years, with the senior men's competition inaugurated in 1913 and the senior women's competition inaugurated in 1982. The T Sport Chek National Championships provide a meaningful soccer experience for host cities and participating clubs, as well as the t players, coaches, support staff, and officials. Page 3
