1 April and May 2015 Well its here at last the start of the summer calendar Friday April the 3rd Good Friday the first practice up at the field, who knows even I might remember to go. ( must try harder ) The summer calendar for this issue April and May is on page 4. There is a lot going on so have a look and its BBQ and Picnic times assuming its not chucking it down with rain after practice on some evenings. It also shows other Archery Club Events for those of you who maybe competing. The Blind Veterans Shoot is on Sunday 31st of May in Crawley I seem to have lost that one off the list apologies to those of you attending. Lyn Hill refers to this and other clubs activities on page 9 and how to find out about what's going on in the district. ED Newhaven Archery Club Committee Chairman-Steve Linsdell. Chairman's report. 2 "I do not know where the past 2 months have gone, maybe I actually got some shooting in for a change. The winter season will be over very soon and thank you for the Archers that turned up regularly to take part. I do appreciate that some of you do not like indoor shooting and must admit, thanks to the weather, wreaked a lot of our Outdoor Winter Calendar. I would like to thank those that came to the Greyhound Social, it appeared that everyone was enjoying themselves and some actually won some money. Thank you to Diana for organising it and those who attended for their effort considering we happen to pick the one night the A27 wanted to stop us getting there. I would also like to thank those few that turned up for the Coaching evening at the Academy and hope they enjoyed themselves, but must admit, personally I was disappointed with lack of support and question whether the work I have to put in to maintain the Level 2 coach qualification is actually worth it! More brighter news, the Summer Calendar is out there and I will make sure a copy is put up in the Pavilion, not only do we have the Selby's, Field Shoot and Competitions, this year we have added some Club Target Days which will enable Archers to shoot actual rounds at distances to meet their ability / equipment. These are held on Sundays and so should not affect the exploits of our mid-week Archers. The idea behind Club Target Days are for you to use Practice evenings for practicing distances and tuning equipment as well as yourselves and therefore taking these changes and improvements onto a structured round. It would be nice if the Club Target Days could be run under competition conditions and encourage our members to return to the days where Archers actually wear club colours rather than their normal casual wear and we then appear to be more of a Club. Finally, I like to thank all those working behind the scene to make our Winter Calendar work and look forward to seeing some new faces support the outdoor season. Until the next issue, please enjoy your Archery and if you have any issues or suggestions please do not hesitate to contact me or any other member of the committee. Your humble Chairperson, Steve"
3 The Chairman points out "Use of Electronic Communication Devices. It was requested at a recent Committee Meeting for clarification of Rule 303h which states:- " Exclusions Archers are not permitted electronic communication devices and headsets in front of the waiting line". We are requesting clarification from Archery UK but do not know how this would affect Archers using Score sheet apps. So for the time being our recommendation for those that do travel to competitions to refrain from using their App's at the target as most competitions normally provide score-books to record the shoot and when you get back to the waiting line you then record your score into your app. An alternative interpretation could be that at Competitions they do not want Archers walking around with headphones on listening to books or music whilst on the range, a kind of Health and safety issue??? If in doubt at a shoot, ask the judge." Not Always!! stop, look, and listen.

7 Jackie Oxley Compound Frostbite February Mr/Mrs/Miss/Jun Archers Name Hits Score Golds Mr Jamie Young 36 297 2 Mr Scott Young 36 281 2 Totals 72 578 4 This was a narrow loss with our opponents scoring 585, just 7 points in it. The Compound team should be nicknamed the Young team as they are now our regular Compound archers! Compound Frostbite March Mr/Mrs/Miss/Jun Archers Name Hits Score Golds Mr Steve Linsdell 36 302 12 Mr Scott Young 36 298 1 Mr Rick Young 35 288 2 Totals 107 888 15 Adjusted Score (as over threshold) 422 When we have a full team we always exceed the Division threshold, which is 655. This decimated our score this month. Next year I will request that we are placed in a higher Division with a greater threshold score and hope that we regularly get 3 Compound archers shooting. Well done, team, for a great score. The outdoor Selby Postal tournament starts in May and is scheduled for either Saturday or Sunday afternoons, starting at 2pm. Check the Club Calendar for details.

10 Lyn Hill It doesn't seem possible that just a few issues ago we were looking forward to the indoor season and now we're outdoors again! I've fallen behind in applying for matches, so I'd better get a move on. Some are really good. The Blind Veterans one on 31st May is always a pleasure - and they will beat us of course. Fascinating to see how they shoot. Another I always go to, is the Lazy Shoot run by Eastbourne in mid August. Nice and relaxing and good fun - ideal if you want to see what a proper match is like, but without the pressure of other matches. Ditchling, Plumpton, Hastings way, are all good. There's a very busy summer season looming for lots of us. You don't need to be an expert either and most competitions allow for any bow style. Go to enjoy the day and meet lots of friendly archers all trying to get the best score they can and have a good time doing it. (I went to a county match last year, shot the worst I had in several years and still thoroughly enjoyed it!) So, how can you find out about all these matches? There are some listed on our summer calendar (which means they will clash with what we are doing). Also, go to the websites of clubs within range of how far you would like to travel. I have some of these on my blog, and will try and add some more if I can. Finally, ask other club members. We have quite a few who like to shoot elsewhere, and someone can let you know what's happening. There's usually a small entrance fee of anything from 5 to 10 which you will usually need to pay by cheque when you send in your form. Some matches are very popular, so get in as quickly as you can. There's one match in the year which you can't take part in - but we need you to be there. Intrigued? It's our 'Western Tournament' on 10th May. Here's where we host the match so need all the help we can get from our members. Lots of little jobs to do, but whatever length of time you can spare is more than welcome if you can't do all day. I like to be in the field party - busy in the morning picking up lots of arrows, but as the distance shorten, we have an easier time. Setting up and clearing up are busy periods too. We have lots of people booked in, so nearly all of our targets will need to be put out. (If you don't already know, the Western round is a total of 8 dozen ends of 6 arrows, 4 dozen at 60 yards and 4 dozen at 50 yards. 5-zone scoring - imperial 9, 7, 5, 3, 1. Maximum possible score is 864.) Don't forget that any night is target night - lots of us are now going to the field on Tuesday evenings as well as the Friday club night. (Wednesdays are the Junior's evening, so seniors not allowed, but during the day there's a whole bunch of people turn up for a shoot.) Just come along and enjoy yourselves. I'm really looking forward to seeing you all at the field and joining you at away matches. Until next time. Visit Lyn's blog - www.lynsarchery.net
