January/February, 2018 All market and lactating animal exhibitors must attend a Quality Assurance Session within the State of Ohio in order to exhibit an animal at the Miami County Fair. The session must be conducted by a qualified instructor. Exhibitors ages 12-18 have the option to take a test given by a qualified instructor to test out of Quality Assurance. There are two separate tests. One for 12-14 year olds and one for 15-18 year olds (Age as of January 1st). If you test out when you are 12, 13, or 14, you will have to test again when you turn 15. The test is 50 multiple choice questions and you must score at least a 70% (35 out of 50). The test is given in two categories - large (sheep, beef, goats, and dairy) and small (poultry and rabbits) animals. If you exhibit in both, you can choose which test to take. The testing will be held at the Fairgrounds in the Secretary s Office on two dates: Test Out Option March 17th from 1:00 pm 3:00 pm *Preregister by March 14th March 20th from 6:00 pm 8:00 pm *Preregister by March 16th Please call the Extension office at 440-3945 to register. You only get one chance to pass the test each year. If you do not pass, then you must attend a regular Quality Assurance session. January/February, 2018 Attention Please Page 4 Fair News The mandatory weigh-in for market steers and market heifers is on Saturday, January 13th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the cattle barn. There will be a Swine Committee Meeting on Monday, January 15, at 7:00 p.m. in the Miami County Fair Office. Swine Exhibitors Youth For the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA ) is replacing Youth PQA plus. Ohio has been at the table for the development of YQCA, however as a state we are not adopting YQCA in 2018 as our curriculum or means to teach Livestock Quality Assurance. YQCA will only be needed by those youth exhibitors who wish to show hogs at a National Pork Board sanctioned show such as National Jr. Swine Show, World Pork Expo, etc. It will also be required by the National Western Livestock Show (Denver) for junior market livestock exhibitors. If a youth s certification in Youth PQA plus has not expired, then it will be honored by Pork Board until certification expires, then they will have to do YQCA. Youth exhibitors will be able to take an online version of YCQA by signing up and paying a fee to receive a certificate. Youth PQA plus training will still be in effect through National Pork Board until the end of 2018, so youth showing at these shows can QA certify with either program. For 2018, Ohio is continuing to utilize our Ohio AQCA curriculum and policies that we currently have in place. Thus, there will be no change in county quality assurance training for 2018. There will continue to be test out and face-to-face options available. Thus, any form of online quality assurance training, including YQCA, will not be accepted for completion of quality assurance training in Ohio. Upcoming Horse Events January 27, 2018: State 4-H Horse Advisors & Volunteer Training and State 4-H Horse Program Youth Recognition Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center, Columbus Registrations are due by January 15. Please visit horse.osu.edu for further details. Sheep and Goat Identification All sheep and goats are required to have official scrapie identification unless they are wethers less than 18 months of age. Sheep and goats born after January 1, 2002 must have official USDA identification and be identified to the flock of birth. As of October 1, 2017, the USDA no longer distributes plastic scrapie tags and applicators. Due to budget cuts, USDA will only be able to provide metal tags. Producers may request free metal tags by calling 866-USDA-TAG. Otherwise they should purchase their own official ear tags/devices from approved tag companies. Note: Sheep and goats with blue slaughter-only/ meat tags cannot be used for exhibition, companion/ lawnmower, or breeding purposes. Additional information from USDA-APHIS and ODA about scrapie ID requirements and restrictions for 4-H exhibitors can be found at: ohio4h.org/ statewideprograms/animal-sciences/goat/goat-resources. 3 rd Annual Meat Judging Clinic The 3 rd Annual Meat Judging Student Clinic will be held Saturday, January 20, 2018, at the Animal Sciences Building on the OSU Columbus Campus. This clinic is for High School Juniors and Seniors. Topics include beef, lamb and pork evaluation carcass classes, wholesale classes, retail classes, retail ID, and notetaking. The cost for the clinic is $60.00 per person. A flyer with more information as well as the link for registration can be found at https://ohio4h.org/ statewide-programs/animal-sciences/livestock/ livestock-calendar-events. Save the Date Saturday, March 3, 2018 Are you, or do you know, a Junior Fair female exhibitor who may be interested in representing Goat, Pork or Wool industries in Miami County in 2018? Then save March 3 as the crowning date. Applications plan to be mailed to the organizational advisors mid-january. All who are interested may apply, no club nomination needed.

January/February, 2018 Upcoming Opportunities Page 9 4-H Mall Kickoff The Miami Valley Centre Mall has partnered with the Miami County 4-H Program to provide great promotional opportunities and Jr. Camp fund raising events. On Saturday, February 24, 10:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m., we will have a 4-H Kickoff at the Miami Valley Centre Mall. Last year we had tremendous club support with displays, animals, advisors, and members. Thank you to all who participated! We hope that you can join us as we promote the 4-H program. Clubs can help by manning the promotional table, bringing small animals, conducting project demonstrations, setting up club tables, and other activities. If you would like a table reserved or would be willing to help with other items, please contact Demetria at woods.372@osu.edu by Monday, February 5. Based on input from last year s participants, this year there will be more hands-on activities. First year families are encouraged to attend, but all are welcome! Please pre-register with your name, number, and age of youth who will be attending by calling 440-3943, or email woods.372@osu.edu.
