BOB QUINN Executive Vice President and General Manager Years with Lions: Years in NFL: 7 QUINN MAKES HIS MARK Bob Quinn, hired January, as executive vice president and general manager, oversees the entire Lions football operations and reports directly to Owner and Chairman of the Board Martha Firestone Ford. ¾ Since joining the Lions, Quinn, who spent the previous seasons with the New England Patriots, has begun building the football foundation which he believes will provide the team with the optimum chance for success. During his introductory press conference, he quickly set forth his vision. ¾ Among the numerous free agents acquired by Quinn this offseason was WR Marvin Jones, considered by many to be the top free agent wide receiver on the market. Additionally, Quinn also retained key Lions free agents, including DT Haloti Ngata and LB Tahir Whitehead. ¾ His initial draft class featured the selection of the most linemen (offense and defense) in a Lions draft since 989, highlighted by the team s first three picks (T Taylor Decker, DT A Shawn Robinson and C Graham Glasgow). PATRIOTS PAST During his time with New England, Quinn served a number of roles in the player personnel department, including most recently as Director of Pro Scouting from -. While he worked as Director of Pro Scouting, the Patriots won the Super Bowl and four-straight AFC East Division championships. ¾ From 9-, Quinn was the Assistant Director of Pro Personnel. For the previous nine years, Quinn worked in several different capacities within the Patriots player personnel department, including roles in college scouting as a National Scout and Regional Scout. He played an integral role in evaluating and procuring talent for the team through the NFL draft process, free agency, trades, etc. ¾ While working for the New England Patriots, he helped contribute to one of the most impressive stretches in NFL history, one that produced four Super Bowl titles, including the most recent championship in (Super Bowl XLIX). Since, Quinn s first year with New England, the Patriots have won six AFC Championships, AFC East titles, + games in a season times (which includes the past six years) and + games in of his seasons. ¾ As Director of Pro Scouting, Quinn utilized all possible methods to seek the Patriots next player. This approach had a tremendous impact on the Patriots Super Bowl XLIX championship as seven players, who were acquired (including two via trades) after the start of the regular season, all played in the Super Bowl. ¾ Another key player during the Super Bowl XLIX Championship run, CB Malcolm Butler, signed with the club after a rookie minicamp tryout. Butler, who sealed the Super Bowl victory with a goal line interception, would join All-Pro CB Darrelle Revis in the New England secondary. NEW LIONS LEADER ¾ Prior to serving as Director of Pro Scouting, Quinn was the Patriots assistant director of pro personnel. Prior to that, he worked in college scouting as the team s national scout in 8 and as a regional scout from -7. ¾ In 8, the Patriots drafted LB Jerod Mayo in the first round and WR Matthew Slater in the fifth round. Mayo was a two-time Pro Bowl linebacker and Slater has become one of the league s elite special teams players having earned five Pro Bowl selections and three All- Pro honors. WHAT TO WATCH FOR ON THE SHOULDERS OF STAFFORD The Detroit Lions own a two-game lead atop the NFC North with three games to play. Sitting at 9-, the Lions have utilized fourth-quarter comebacks in eight of their nine victories through the first weeks of the season, including last Sunday against the visiting Chicago Bears. Leading by three midway through the fourth quarter, Lions QB Matthew Stafford threw a pass intended for WR Anquan Boldin that was intercepted by Bears CB Cre Von LeBlanc and returned for a pick-six to give Chicago a 7- advantage. Yet, having already led seven game-winning drives this season, Stafford and the offense had the Bears seemingly right where they wanted them. Trailing by four, Detroit got the ball back with just under seven minutes remaining inside their own -yard line. Needing a touchdown, Stafford engineered a six-play drive that stalled at Chicago s seven-yard line. Facing nd-andgoal, Stafford dropped back, surveyed the field, scrambled and used his feet to maneuver his way into the end zone for the go-ahead score. Stafford on what he saw on his go-ahead touchdown run: A lot of white jerseys. I was able to get in. You know, we just We had to get a score there. They covered us up pretty good initially. I don t know who I I felt like I leaned back and took off to run and was trying to find somebody to throw it to, and then once I decided to run, I was getting in I just knew we needed a play, we needed a touchdown and had it made up in my mind once I started running I wasn t going to be denied. Detroit s stifling defense forced the Bears to turn it over on downs to end the game, as the Lions claimed their fifthstraight victory and their eighth win in their last nine tries, due, in large part, to No. 9 leading his eighth game-winning drive of and 8th of his career. According to Elias Sports Bureau, Stafford now has the most game-winning drives accumulated by a quarterback in a single-season since the 97 NFL Merger. Stafford helped the Lions improve to - at home this season. Head Coach Jim Caldwell on QB Matthew Stafford making plays despite battling an injury: Yeah, he s an unusual guy. We had talked, I told the guys earlier in the week that when I was growing up they used to call this division the Black and Blue Division, simply because of games like this. I thought he kind of epitomized that. One glove on, limping into the end zone, gave up the whole bit. It was a hard-fought game, the Bears are a big, tough, strong team. They played awfully well and we had a battle on our hands. He leads our group and does a tremendous job of that. I don t think anybody s ever questioned his toughness, nor have they questioned his ability to come back from a setback. Throws the picksix and comes right back and takes the team right down the field and puts it in the end zone. Quite a competitor. Stafford on how much his finger injury limited him in the game: I don t know. I just tried to play through it, play as good as I could. I let those guys know that it may not be pretty coming in there, but those guys made some great plays for me. Obviously, didn t play as well as I can. You know, those two turnovers hurt us, but our defense played great. Then we were able to put together a drive late to go win it. BOLDIN IT ALL TOGETHER ON OFFENSE When WR Anquan Boldin was acquired by the Lions heading into training camp, he hit the ground running and hasn t stopped since. There is a reason the Walter Payton Man of the Year winner has become a staple in the Lions locker room in more ways than one this season, as his teammates and coaches speak of him as one who embodies the mold of a consummate professional and experienced wide receiver who displays his prowess against opponents on a weekly basis. Lions Wide Receivers Coach Robert Prince on when Boldin first joined the team: The thing with Anquan is he wasn t here during our minicamps and OTAs, so he comes the day before we start training camp and I meet with him for about an hour and the next day when we have practice, I mean he was ready. He got the Surface, looked at the pictures, and I m like, OK, Anquan, let s go over this, and I m going to teach you this offense. And he was like, Hold on. You just call out the play and see if I know it. And he knew it, which was shocking. Lions DT Haloti Ngata on the impact Boldin has had on the offense: Matt s comfortable throwing it to him now, no matter what. Matt has that confidence in him and, shoot, I think everybody knows it s going to Anquan. But he still gets open, still catches the ball, no matter what, and it s just awesome, man. Fourteen years in the league, and it s amazing he s still doing it. The day Boldin joined the Lions he was certain to have an impact, but few, if any, would have predicted he would lead the team in touchdowns heading into Week. However, he has done just that, settling in as one of QB Matthew Stafford s most sure-handed targets. Boldin has made a catch in every game this season and is fresh off of a recordbreaking performance in Week. With three catches, 9 yards and one touchdown against the Bears last week, Boldin moved into th place on the NFL s all-time receptions list. While he has certainly provided the statistical output for the offense in, the weight of his veteran presence in the locker room is something that cannot be measured. Caldwell on Boldin s leadership: He s invaluable, just in terms of his presence. He sets a great example, no one works harder, no one s more diligent in their preparation, no one s more diligent in terms of studying and making sure he s prepared for the game. He s a great communicator tremendous guy. DETROIT LIONS WEEKLY RELEASE

Lions Offensive Coordinator Jim Bob Cooter on Boldin s role: Extremely dependable, somebody who communicates well. Somebody who s really reliable, for the quarterback, for me, for his teammates. Converts third downs. Effective in the red zone. Obviously a veteran, respected player that has a really respected presence in our huddle, in our locker room, in our offensive meeting room. Been a pleasure to be around. At 9-, the Lions head into a road matchup with the Giants, aiming for six straight victories. Needing just more receptions to do, climbing to seventh place on the all-time receptions list looms within reach for Boldin. But despite the potential to reach more individual accolades, the knack of one of the game s ironman receivers to prioritize the team s goals personifies his selflessness. Boldin on what it means to reach th on the all-time receptions list: At this point, nothing. It s probably for something later down the road. But at this point, I m trying to win a championship. I could care less about stats. Boldin on what teams that have won championships have in common: I think you see in all those of teams, coming together as a team. I mean, there s a lot of talented teams in this league that can t win and that s because they don t play together as a team. I think we figured out how to perform as a team. And I think Coach Caldwell has done a great job of bringing us together and having us on the same page. I mean, he s a guy with a great vision. He does a great job getting us to see that vision as well. DETROIT DEFENSE VS. EVERYBODY No team in the National Football League can function at a high level without a defense that thoroughly understands assignments and can execute well. The Lions, led by Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin and Head Coach Jim Caldwell, have stressed the importance of consistency and learning from mistakes to build on and improve going forward. This has been the focal point of the defense through Week, as numerous veteran players have missed time due to injury and younger players have been forced into larger roles on a fill-in basis. As injured Lions regain health and return to the field, Detroit s defense has been able to lock down opposing offenses by outsmarting opponents, utilizing its depth and making game-changing plays. Perhaps the best example of the Lions improved level of defensive play is the team s current streak of holding opponents to points or less in the last seven games. The Lions allowed 7 points vs. Washington in Week 7, points at Houston in Week 8, points at Minnesota in Week 9, 9 points vs. Jacksonville in Week, points vs. Minnesota in Week, at New Orleans in Week and 7 vs. Chicago this past Sunday, totaling at points allowed over seven games to opponents. Comparably, the defense gave up points over the first four games of the season alone. The last time the Lions held opponents to points or less in seven straight games occurred during Weeks - of the 9 season. Caldwell on the defense gelling better week after week: I think that is indeed the case. They ve been able to hold teams down, today it was points. They ve been able to keep teams under yards, and particularly that s a team that can run the ball extremely well. Good, tough people up front with a very, very good back that can run downhill and create some problems for you. Our defense is coming together, they play really well as a unit. It s good to see (DeAndre) Levy back out there running around making some plays for us. Our linebacking corps is a good corps. Our guys up front do a great job with it, as well as the secondary. I think they re coming together in a number of different areas, to be honest with you, so we ve just got to keep that going. Lions LB Tahir Whitehead on the defense limiting opponents to no more than points in seven straight games: We re communicating better. We re peaking at the right time and obviously every time we watch the film, there s always something that you can do better and that s what we re striving for. We re striving for perfection and that s why I think we ve been able to play better defense at this point in the season because we have a lot guys that take pride in their work. We re fighting it tooth and nail to make sure that we can be the best defense that we can be. Under Austin and Caldwell s tenure the Lions have held opponents to points or less in of the team s games played (7.8 percent) since the start of the season.
