The 2005 Season: Chasing Vancouver Like a fugitive that escapes across the border just ahead of a persistent posse, the Vancouver Canadians held off the seasonlong pursuit of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in the final series of the year to claim the Western Division title by a single game. Salem-Keizer (45-31) won two of three games against Vancouver (46-30) in a series that matched the Northwest League s two best teams, but the Volcanoes needed to sweep the series to claim the title and the Canadians won the pennant when they took the second of the three-game game set, 2-1. Despite the second-place finish, Manager Steve Decker and his team could look back on their season with a sense of accomplishment. The Volcanoes had given themselves a chance to win the flag after trailing the Canadians by as many as seven games. Salem-Keizer led the league in batting (.291), finished with the circuit s top four hitters and posted the second best fielding percentage (.974) in NWL history. Decker and four of his players Will Thompson, Pablo Sandoval, Mike Mooney and Brian Anderson were named to the All-Star team. Decker, veteran pitching coach Jerry Cram and first-year coach Ricky Ward opened the campaign without the usual high draft choices that traditionally form the nucleus of the roster. San Francisco s first selection in the draft came in the fourth round and the top two choices, outfielder Ben Copeland (round 4) and pitcher Dan Griffin (#5), signed late and began the summer in Arizona. Two other picks, reliever Buck Cody (#16) and infielder David Maroul (#23) were helping Texas win the College Baseball World Series. Like Copeland and Griffin, they d join the Volcanoes in July. Whatever Salem-Keizer lacked in top draft choices centerfielder Joey Dyche (#7) and shortstop Anthony Contreras (#9) were the highest selections with the team on Opening Day it countered with experience. First baseman Will Thompson, outfielders Charlie Babineaux and Jose Yens, and pitchers Matt Minor and Matt Raguse all played with the Volcanoes in 2004. Kellen Ludwig debuted with S-K in 2003. Mooney, a hard-hitting outfielder, and Sandoval, a promising third baseman, came from the Giants championship team in the Arizona Rookie League. Salem-Keizer opened the season in Tri-City, won three of five games against the Dust Devils and returned home to meet Yakima, June 26. After splitting four games, the Volcanoes won a dramatic finale in 12 innings as Mooney ripped a two-out homer to tie the game in the 10th and singled home the winning run in the 12th. Brian Anderson, who emerged as the league s top closer, worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings for the win. In his first 10 games, he d allow one run, six hits and strike out 20 without a single walk. With a bevy of starting pitchers, the Volcanoes began the season using a piggyback rotation. Only Ludwig was given a regular turn in the rotation. Another eight hurlers were assigned to work in pairs, alternating starts. After 15 games, they d settle on a rotation of Ludwig, Raguse and three promising draft choices: Nick Pereira (round 10), Joey Martinez (#12) and Sergio Romo (#28). The bullpen was talented and deep: the Volcanoes would finish the season 39-0 when leading after seven innings. After posting a 6-4 record in its first 10 games, Salem-Keizer dropped two of three in Eugene before returning home to face Tri-City on the Fourth of July. The game drew the second largest crowd in team history as 5,503 packed The Crater to watch the Volcanoes win 10-6. Romo earned his first victory with 5 innings of two-hit pitching. The Dust Devils would win three of the next four games, leaving the Volcanoes 9-9, four games out of first place. On July 9, Salem-Keizer staged a terrific comeback in Everett after trailing 12-3, but the AquaSox held on to win, 12-11. The following day, teams were directed by NWL President Bob Richmond to bring their rosters in compliance with the league guideline restricting the number of 23-year old players on a team to no more than four. (A player s age is determined by how old they are as of June 5th each year.) While teams may open the season with more than four over age players, they have to reduce that number to less than five by July 1st. When Vancouver came to Eugene with eight over age players, the Emeralds filed a complaint with the league prompting Richmond s directive. Vancouver was not the only team violating the rule on 23-year olds (Everett also had to reassign four players), but they were receiving the most significant contribution from their senior players. Seven of the eight were pitchers; and, during the 11-game stretch from July 1-11, they had combined to start eight games and post a collective 6-1 record with four saves as Vancouver went 9-2, improved their season mark to 16-5 and increased their lead in the West from one game to five. There would be no sanctions. While Northwest League rules set restrictions on the number of 23-year old players, there were no written penalties covering teams in violation. (After the season, Richmond told league directors their managers should protest games against teams that were not in compliance.) Returning home July 13, Salem-Keizer (10-11) won two of three games against Eugene. In the opener, Babineaux blasted a pair of homers in a 3-2 victory. In the second game, the Volcanoes had 18 hits, four by Dyche, but needed 11 innings to win 2-1 after leaving 17 men on base. Five pitchers combined for 8 innings of three-hit, shutout relief with Wayne The Train Foltin getting the win. In Yakima, the Volcanoes won three of five games; and, on July 19, they tied the NWL record by turning six doubles plays in a 6-3 loss to the Bears. After 28 games, Salem-Keizer was 14-14, seven games behind Vancouver (21-7). The Volcanoes began a seven-game winning streak the next day as Mooney had five hits while Matt Raguse and Dave McKae combined on a two-hit, 10-0 shutout. McKae, S-K s top long reliever, would lead the club in Earned Run Average (2.42) and strikeouts (83) while making only four starts. Salem-Keizer shuffled its player deck when the team came home for a six-game series with Everett and Vancouver. Starting catcher Henry Gutierrez was sent to Arizona while Contreras went to San Jose, making room at short for David Maroul who had just been named the Most Outstanding Player in the College World Series. Catching duties now were split between Andy Busch and Barry Gunther. Gunther would hit.337 while Busch proved to be a skillful handler of pitchers: the club was 20-6 in games he started over the balance of the season. Romo and Minor blanked the Aqua- Sox, 4-0, in the opener as Maroul had two hits in his debut and Thompson was 3-4 with a double and home run. The Volcanoes had 15 hits three each by Dyche and Sandoval to win the second game, 9-8, and took the third, 6-2, as Mooney went 3-4 with a triple, homer and four RBI s. The Volcanoes then swept the Canadians (11-4, 8-6 and 7-3) to move within three games of the lead. Dyche, red-hot after a slow start, was 4-4 in the opener to raise his average to.298. finale, Romo scattered four hits over 5 innings to win his third game. Thompson had two hits in each game, was batting.373 and had a 14-game hitting streak. Mooney (.360) and Sandoval (.343) were right behind him. The Volcanoes had found their stride; Salem-Keizer was the hottest team in the league. The winning streak ended in Spokane July 27 as the Indians jumped on Ludwig for five runs in the first 3 innings in an 8-3 victory. The year s most stunning defeat came the following night when Spokane scored four runs in the 10th to beat Anderson, 8-7. After the Indians won the third game, the Volcanoes were 21-17 and four games back. They began a new winning streak the next day in Dan Griffin s sensational debut. The 6 7 righthander gave up one hit in 6 shutout innings, fanned 11 and walked one. Anderson bounced back to get his 10th save. On August 2, Salem-Keizer returned to The Crater to meet Boise. The Volcanoes won all five games. Ben Copeland joined the club for the series fourth game and went 3-5 with a double and three RBI s. Romo improved to 5-0 with 6 innings of three-hit shutout ball. Ludwig, now working in relief, and Foltin preserved the shutout with three hitless innings. Salem-Keizer won the final game when Copeland ripped three hits including a tie-breaking home run in the 7th. Mooney also had three hits and was 11-22 in the series while Thompson went 8-17 to raise his average to.394. Raguse got the win with four innings of shutout relief. The Volcanoes were 28-17, one game behind Vancouver. Now the two rivals would face off for six consecutive games. The Canadians were 13-11 since being required to pare four of their 23-year old pitchers from their roster July 11; but Vancouver still had a fine team, led by an excellent staff that would post the league s lowest ERA in 15 years, 3.00. The Canadians won the opener, 9-5, but Joey Martinez scattered four hits over 5 2/3 shutout innings to lead the Volcanoes to a 5-2 victory in the second game. The course of the season changed the following day. In the first inning, the Volcanoes scored on singles by Dyche, Mooney and Thompson. Then, with runners on first and third, Sandoval hit a ground ball to first. Thompson, sliding into second, caught his spikes in the dirt and dislocated his ankle. Salem-Keizer had lost its best hitter the league leader in batting (.384) and runs batted in (35) for the season. Chris Stanton was rushed from Arizona to replace him at first base. Thompson s loss stunned the team. The Volcanoes dropped the third game, 6-1, then lost three straight to Vancouver at home: 5-3, 3-1 and 7-1. The Canadians had rebuilt their lead to five games; Salem-Keizer (29-22) was now tied for second with Everett. When the team got to Boise, there was more bad news: Nick Pereira had strained his arm against Vancouver and would not pitch again for 18 days. Then, Matt Raguse abruptly announced his retirement to return to college. Steve Decker never lost faith in his team and made two decisions that paid immediate dividends. He moved second baseman Mark Minicozzi into the cleanup spot and made Jose Yens a regular in the lineup. In August, Minicozzi would lead all NWL batters with a.415 average while Yens hit.354 with five home runs and 21 RBI s. Martinez put S-K back on the winning track in Boise with 7 innings of two-hit shutout ball as Busch hit a grand slam homer, Minicozzi and Sandoval each had three hits and Yens added a home run. The Volcanoes (33-23) won four of five games against the Hawks. They were three out with 20 to play. Returning home, Salem-Keizer and Spokane staged a memorable slugfest that featured nine home runs, five by the Indians who won, 12-10. The next day, Griffin and Foltin silenced Spokane on a five-hit shutout. In the third game, Romo lasted three innings in his worst outing of the year and suffered his only loss. Dave McKae fanned nine and yielded two hits in 4 2/3 innings of outstanding relief in a 5-4 victory in game four as Minicozzi went 4-4 and drove in the winning run. The Volcanoes had only four hits in the finale as Spokane took the game, and the series, 3-2. Despite losing five of eight games, Salem-Keizer (36-28) remained three games behind Vancouver (39-25), tied for second with Everett. Now, while the Canadians and AquaSox met for six consecutive games, the Volcanoes would play six straight against Eugene (32-32). After winning the first three at home, the Volcanoes set a franchise record with 21 hits in a 16-3 victory in Eugene. The next day, Romo logged his seventh win and Anderson notched his 17th save. On September 1, S-K beat Eugene, 4-2, on Yens two-run double in the 8th to sweep the series and move into a first place tie with Vancouver; the Canadians had lost in Everett. Both teams were now 42-28 with six games to play. Winners of seven straight, the Volcanoes would host three games with Everett and finish the season in Vancouver against the team they had doggedly chased all summer. It was the showdown both clubs wanted. It took 10 innings for Salem-Keizer to win the opener with Everett as Yens again delivered the winning run with a two-out single that brought Minicozzi home from second. Ben Nieto made his fourth consecutive strong start after coming up from Arizona in mid-august, allowing five hits and one run in 5 2/3 innings. Pereira got the win in relief after escaping a one-out, bases loaded jam in the 10th. In the second game, the Aqua- Sox scored seven runs off Martinez in the first three innings and rolled to a 13-7 win. The Volcanoes loss coupled with Vancouver s second straight win over Eugene made the series third game meaningless in the standings. The Canadians held the tie-breaker with the Volcanoes who would have to sweep the series in Vancouver to claim the Western Division flag. On Labor Day, the opening game at Nat Bailey Stadium matched the Volcanoes Sergio Romo (7-1, 2.69) and the Canadians all-star righthander Mike Madsen (6-1, 1.68). Both left after five innings with the score knotted, 2-2. Salem-Keizer broke the tie in the 7th when Copeland tripled and rode home on Mooney s RBI single. Pereira fanned four in two hitless innings to get his 5th win while Anderson earned his 19th save to move S-K within one game of the lead with two to play. Dave McKae (3-1, 2.49) and Vancouver s Jimmy Shull (3-3, 2.55) hooked up in another tense pitchers duel in the second game. With the score tied, 1-1, in the 6th, the Canadians Justin Sellers reached on a two-base error by Sandoval and scored on Jose Garcia s single to center. That would stand as the winning run. The Volcanoes managed only one hit off four relievers over the final three innings and lost, 2-1. Vancouver had won the West. The final margin between the teams would be a single game. Though Thompson missed 28 games, he had enough plate appearances to win the batting title. His.384 average was the league s third best in 35 years. Mooney (.342), Sandoval (.330) and Minicozzi (.321) finished right behind him; the first time in Northwest League history one team had the league s top four hitters. Mooney led the NWL in hits (104), runs (57), total bases (157) and triples (9). Romo led the circuit in wins (7); Anderson had the most saves (19). While the Volcanoes had their second best record (45-31) in nine years, the sting of second place would take time to fade.
