Andrew Suarez (1-0, 0.90) is slated to make the start on the mound for San Jose this evening. Winning Ways The Giants enter tonight s contest having won eight out of their last nine games. San Jose is also 14-5 in their last 19 games. Since July 1, the Giants are 38-21 tops in the California League. In The Standings The Giants (70-64) are four games ahead of Modesto (66-68) in the North Division Wild Card race with six games remaining in the regular season. San Jose (40-24) is also one game in front of Visalia (39-25) for first place in the second half standings. Path To Clinching The Giants are attempting to reach the playoffs for the 11th time in the last 12 seasons. A San Jose win and a Stockton loss in Visalia this evening would clinch a playoff berth for the Giants tonight. San Jose missed the postseason last year after reaching the playoffs in a league-record 10 consecutive seasons from 2004-2013. League-Leading Pitching Staff San Jose boasts the lowest team ERA in the California League at 3.48. Last night s 2-0 victory over Modesto was the Giants league-high 15th shutout of the season. San Jose has three shutouts in their last seven games and nine shutouts since the All-Star break. The Giants own a 2.90 team ERA since the beginning of July. Strikeout Record Last night, the Giants pitching staff established a new team single-season record for strikeouts. San Jose has recorded 1,285 strikeouts this season (9.6 per game) to lead all of Minor League Baseball. The previous club record was 1,282 strikeouts set during the 2013 season. Five Giants pitchers rank among the top 18 in the league in strikeouts: Jake Smith (8th, 118), Martin Agosta (9th, 116), Chase Johnson (10th, 111), Ian Gardeck (T16th, 96) and Luis Ysla (T18th, 95). Angel Villalona Home Run Tracker With a home run on Saturday, first baseman Angel Villalona moved into a tie for fourth place with Travis Ishikawa (2004-05, 2007) on the San Jose Giants career home run list. Villalona has hit 36 homers with San Jose spanning three seasons (9 HR in 2009, 14 HR in 2013, 13 HR in 2015 210 total games). At Muni The Giants are 19-7 in their last 26 home games dating back to July 7. San Jose s 39-29 mark at Municipal Stadium this season is the second-best home record in the league (Rancho Cucamonga 40-26). The Giants possess a spectacular 3.02 team ERA at home this year (3.98 on the road). League-Record Streak San Jose has posted a league-record 11 consecutive winning seasons (2004-14). At 70-64 currently, the Giants need to go at least 1-5 over their final six games to extend the streak. San Jose was at one point 14 games under.500 this season (12-26 on May 18). The Giants were 13 games under the.500 mark as late as July 6 (34-47). Team Awards The Giants will honor their Pitcher of the Year in a ceremony before tonight s game. San Jose names their team MVP before tomorrow s home finale. Award winners thus far include: Christian Arroyo (Offensive Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year), Jake Smith (Relief Pitcher of the Year) and Dan Slania (Good Guy for work in community). Scoring First The Giants are 32-2 in their last 34 games in which they ve scored first. Forjet allowed just three singles and didn t issue a walk during his 101-pitch masterpiece. The righthander, who at one point retired 16 consecutive Nuts hitters, achieved a new career-high in innings pitched. Jake Smith then worked a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning to collect the save. Angel Villalona (2-for-3, 2B) and Ryder Jones (2-for-3) had two hits apiece to lead San Jose offensively. Both of the Giants runs came on double plays. Modesto starter Alex Balog suffered the loss after allowing two runs (both earned) over seven innings. Today s Opponent: Modesto Nuts The Modesto Nuts, an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, are four games behind both San Jose and Stockton in the race for the two Wild Card spots. Modesto has lost 12 out of their last 16 games. The Giants are 12-8 against the Nuts this season, including a 5-3 mark at Municipal Stadium.
