COVER STORY CY-FAIR ISD FOOTBALL 2010 PREVIEWI It s time to dust off your favorite teams spirit wear, because high school football season in Cy-Fair is here! Fans will enjoy the intense season in District 17-5A as new rivalries begin and old ones heat up. With two more Cy-Fair ISD schools adding to the district s varsity play and stacked lineups from all sides, it really is anyone s game. Hopefully, we can make it deep into playoffs this year and [I can] end my senior season with a bang. - Chuck Keeton, senior quarterback Cypress Creek Cougar quarterback, Chuck Keeton STRENGTHS KEY PLAYERS & SCHEDULES Written by Donna Kay Moore Photos by Suzi Issa & Marisa Hugonnett 24 CY-FAIR MAGAZINE Visit CyFairMagazine.com for Cy-Fair jobs, events, news and more.

defensive end, Efram Clark, and defensive end, Jordan Johnson The Mustangs gear up for their first varsity season Cy-Fair Bobcats Cy-Fair High School s football program has had a few rough seasons lately, finishing 0-10 in 2009, but is eagerly anticipating roaring to life this season. Head coach, Ed Pustejovsky says their goal in 2010 is to win the district championship. We had a good spring and made strides on both sides of the ball, he says. The Bobcats have four offensive and four defensive starters returning this season to help them turn things around. Cypress Creek Cougars In 2009, Cypress Creek was the district champion, with a regular season record of 9-1 and a district record of 6-1. They were eliminated in a disappointing first round of playoffs, though, and are looking to redeem themselves from their early exit. According to several head coaches in the district, the Cougars are the early favorites to repeat. Dave Campbell s Texas Football, an annual publication that previews all Texas high school football teams, recently ranked the top 25 teams in Texas. was the only Cy-Fair ISD team to make the list, ranking 16. Cypress Falls Golden Eagles Cypress Falls, with a district record of 4-3 last year, looks to improve and become a contender for the district championship this season. The team will be lead by the duo of quarterback, Troy Mitchell and receiver, Dean Johnson. Last season, Mitchell passed over 600 yards and Johnson had more than 1,000 yards receiving. The Spartans hope to have a successful first varsity season Many of Cy-Fair s football players have built long-lasting friendships over the years quarterback, Afton Williams We work each day with a goal of getting better. We will improve on last year when we can get our players to work every day as if it was the last. Cypress Woods head coach, David Jones Cypress Lakes Spartans In 2010, a new team will enter district competition as Cypress Lakes High School competes in their first-ever varsity season. Cy Lakes head coach, Robert Blackshear says his goal is to have the most successful first varsity season possible. I believe that second season of playing [junior varsity] ball allowed us to really grow as a team, he says. Cypress Ranch Mustangs Cypress Ranch joins as a new varsity team in the district for the 2010 season. As the Mustangs anticipate the upcoming season, head coach, Gene Johnson says, Our goal is to make (this season) a tremendously positive experience for our senior class, as this is their only chance at varsity football. Only one team, Cypress Ridge, has ever won the district championship in the first season of varsity play, but the Mustangs are ready for the challenge. Cypress Ridge Rams is beginning its seventh season and has qualified for the playoffs five out of the last six years with two district championships, including one in 2004 - their first varsity season. Head coach, Gary Thiebaud sets high expectations every year. The team s goals this season are to qualify again for the playoffs, win the district championship, and win the state championship. Seven starters will be returning to help meet those goals. Last year, the Rams finished their season with a record of 7-5, after losing in round two of the state playoffs. Thiebaud says they learned they must increase the overall number of players on the team to be more successful. Last year, they had 44 players on varsity, which made practices difficult. In 2010, their varsity numbers will increase to between 65 and 70 players. Thiebaud adds that parental support is an important factor for a successful team. We have kids with a lot of family support, which is tremendous, he says. The kids seem to be more successful when the entire family shares in the experience. We also have kids with very little family support. The coaches carry a big part of that load for those kids. Cypress Springs Panthers The Cypress Springs Panthers, who went 4-6 overall and 3-4 in district, are also hoping to improve on last season and make the playoffs in 2010. Head coach, Roland Gonzalez says they learned an important lesson in 2009. It s important to be consistent each week, he says. This season, they will work toward that goal with help from key players, Xavier Johnson and Davon Hicks. 26 CY-FAIR MAGAZINE Visit CyFairMagazine.com for Cy-Fair jobs, events, news and more.

Cypress Woods Wildcats In only their second full year of fielding a varsity team, the Cypress Woods Wildcats ended the 2009 season with the best overall record in Cy-Fair ISD. Although they placed second in the district behind, they advanced to the fourth round in state playoffs and finished 11-3 overall. Wildcat head coach, David Jones reports that the team s off-season went well and players and coaches alike are expecting a great 2010 season. Because the team did not participate in spring drills, they will begin intense training in August. We work each day with a goal of getting better, says Jones. We will improve on last year when we can get our players to work every day as if it was the last. Falcons Wildcat quarterback, Colton Huntsman center, Jordan Prangner High School head coach, David Snokhous is looking to turn things around after running up short in the 2009 season. The Falcons finished the season 3-7 overall and 2-5 in district play. Snokhous says the team s goals for 2010 are simple to make the playoffs and be a better team than they were last year. In 2009, we learned that we need to find a way to finish the game and hopefully eliminate turnovers, he says. Turnovers late in the game killed us. has eight starters returning to the team, and with an injury-free spring training season, the team and coaching staff are optimistic about the upcoming season. We have kids with a lot of family support, which is tremendous. Cypress Ridge head coach, Gary Thiebaud The Wildcats ended the 2009 season with the best overall record in Cy-Fair Lobos High School had quite an interesting season in 2009. The Lobos spent the season adjusting to new head coach, Todd Thompson, who implemented new systems on both sides of the ball. They allowed 111 points in the first two games of the season, but ended the year as the top-ranked defense team. Finishing 5-5, they narrowly missed the post season. Cheer on Your Favorite Team Strike up the band, and get your pom poms and stadium chairs out! Texas high school football season is here. With the 2010 season in District 17-5A expected to be extremely competitive, it s anyone s guess as to who the stand-out teams will be. One thing is for sure, though with all of Cy-Fair s dedicated high school teams, football fans will definitely have something to cheer about. Don t miss the season s kickoff in Cy-Fair on Aug. 27. CFM Both the Eagles and the Lobos look to make it to post season competition DONNA KAY MOORE is an avid football fan and can t wait for the season to begin.
