01/19 01/18 The Essential Date September 9, 2012 Drivers Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton Place Monza Monza was supposed to be where the Hamilton /Alonso dual for the world championship had to take place. But for sure, with next episode, the show may change again...

02/19 On track Highlights of the GP Massa fights * 5-position penalty for gearbox change. ** 10-position on the grid because of the Belgian GP (robbed start and collision). Start : Massa passes Button for the 2 nd position and gets close to Hamilton. Too short to take the lead. Schumacher remains 4 th ahead of Vettel and Räikkönen. Rosberg is 10 th, he lost 4 positions. No incident. Starting grid 1 2 Jenson Button 3 McLaren Felipe Massa 4 Ferrari Michael Schumacher 5 Mercedes AMG 6 Nico Rosberg 7 Mercedes AMG 8 Kamui Kobayashi 9 Sauber 10 Fernando Alonso Ferrari 11 Mark Webber 12 Red Bull Sergio Pérez 13 Sauber 14 Daniel Ricciardo Toro Rosso 15 16 Jean-Eric Vergne Toro Rosso 17 18 Vitaly Petrov Caterham 19 Timo Glock 20 Marussia Charles Pic 21 Marussia 22 Pastor Maldonado** 23 Williams 24 Nico Hülkenberg Force India Lewis Hamilton McLaren Bruno Senna Williams TOP Sebastian Vettel Red Bull Kimi Räikkönen LotusF1 Paul Di Resta* Force India FLOP Jérôme D Ambrosio LotusF1 Heikki Kovalainen Caterham Narain Karthikeyan HRT Pedro De La Rosa HRT

The essential 03/19 Gliding Lap 9 : hard spin round for Vergne, on first turn. He lost control of his Toro Rosso. Resistance Lap 1 : Button tries to get back his lost position from Massa. The Brazilian well resists. Too short Lap 5 : Contact between Senna and Rosberg. No damages. Between champions Lap 7 : Alonso gets rid of Schumacher. He is 5 th. Wheel nudge Lap 7 : Di Resta backs on Senna who avoids the hit. Wake up Lap 19 : Button wakes up and takes the 2 nd position to Massa. So close Lap 21 : Vettel and Alonso pit at the same time. The Ferrari almost pitted out first. Leading Lap 29 : Hamilton takes the lead of the race back by passing Pérez. He got him! Lap 29 : Alonso overtakes Vettel. Off Lap 33 : Button is off. Back to 2 nd Lap 40 : Alonso is 2 nf after having overtaken Massa. Can t be stopped Lap 44 : Pérez snatched the 3 rd position to Massa. Three laps later, he does the same to Alonso. Hard time Lap 48 : Vettel cannot finish (alternator). Vice versa Lap 51 : Webber spins round.

THE... Event of the race 04/19 01/18 Lap 26, Vettel vs Alonso : Remember last summer... Off course, we suspected they could not have forgotten this episode. Back in 2011, here, in Monza, Vettel had been sent to the grass by Alonso. The German kept full speed and had overtaken his opponent. Since then, both had recalled the other of this event. In India, they still wrangled a bit about this. Role Reversal. The appointment was given to remake the game, and at the same place, the Curve Grande, but with inverted positions : Alonso the hunter, Vettel the prey. The hunted animal had the same survival reaction : a free ride to the grass for the one who tried to pass. Vettel was tough this time. The change of trajectory was sharp and late - so even more vicious than Alonso s last year. A speed of 290 km/h to revenge? The action was, this year, even more spectacular, even dangerous enough in a corner with a speed of 290 km/h, with a light clearance in case of crash. Alonso well managed his Ferrari but could not pass Vettel. Obviously, Seb did it on purpose. Race stewards penalized him for this. Thinking of his revenge spirit. This nice dual between both champions did not deserve such an end. Unfortunately, we must get used to it.

04/19 01/18 Race analysis No doubt on Hamilton s victory. Pérez does better than Ferrari. Alonso does a good job. Räikkönen ensures. Red Bull drowning. Button treated. M aybe except Tifosi, none had any reason not to appreciate this moment. First of all, because a week ago, all three winners were off, KO from the very first turn. All of Grosjean s innocent victims, three of them, had made an appointment on the podium, a couple of days later. Hamilton even won more than a Grand Prix. He is back on the second position of the world championship, knowing the fact that he was 5 th before starting. Lewis could not miss this Grand Prix where, in 2010, he missed it out and lost all chances to be world champion. This time, his teammate, Button, is the one who leaves Monza in a bad position because of a mechanical abandonment. Aside, Pérez could give us a wide smile, as he usually does. The Mexican gained 10 positions in the race, overtook both Ferrari cars and, once again, improved his value on the transfer market. For a few races, we had only mentioned Kobayashi and Hülkenberg. (Re) making the difference, and in Italy this time, at the expense of the Ferrari cars, is quite a glance : his name is now on the shortlist to replace Massa in 2013 at the Scuderia. Doing great in Spa, Sauber was not lucky and lost everything on first corner. Pérez s second position today is a simple reward. The small Swiss team can really win a Grand Prix. Being second by 4,356 seconds cannot yet be considered as a real regret. And finally, the third thief on the podium, Alonso, does not have much to report about either. Only tenth on the starting grid, continuously slowed because of mechanical issues since the beginning of the weekend, he is back on Top 3 and even takes advantage of some of his opponents problems. We thought luck was gone in Spa. But it still helps him a little. Button gives up, both Red Bull cars too. The Spanish driver also contributed to Vettel s decline by getting him to fault. The German double world champion did not deserve this penalty, but his steering wheel nudge is an evidence that he was backed into the ropes. Hamilton s victory and his lost position that benefits to Pérez do not help Alonso at all, but he observes that, for the third consecutive Grand Prix, he is back on second position of the world championship. After Webber and Vettel, Hamilton is now right behind him. By 37 points, that is to say almost the same difference as before the disaster in Belgium and second highest gap since the beginning of the season. Even Massa can be happy with his nice Grand Prix. Even Räikkönen, 5 th, who, despite a very complicated weekend for Lotus, jumps to third position in the world championship. WIth everybody so happy, so shall we be.

Sport Auto Barometer Here is our classification for a virtual championship only taking into account the four last races. Top Flop 07/19 01/18 n Räikkönen keeps the lead of the barometer. He did not win but he is the only driver who scored points in all four past races, with two podiums. n Button is second of the classification, with one more point than Alonso and Hamilton who remains with two victories and two abandonments. n Vettel falls to 5 th position, ahead of Pérez, Massa and Schumacher. Webber is only 9 th. he scored 42 points less than Kimi Räikkönen within four races. 1. K. Räikkönen 58 pts = 2. J. Button 51 pts +2 3. F. Alonso 50 pts = 4. L. Hamilton 50 pts +3 5. S. Vettel 40 pts -3 6. S. Pérez 26 pts +6 7. F. Massa 24 pts = 8. M. Schumacher 20 pts +1 9. M. Webber 16 pts -4 10. R. Grosjean 15 pts -2 Pérez (and Massa...) One could easily replace the other. Pérez highlighted this Grand Prix where Massa also was on forefront. One more evidence that the Mexican deserves to replace the Brazilian in 2013 at Ferrari. Red Bull It had been a while since we last saw Red Bull in such a bad shape. Bad qualifications, lack of speed, penalty for Vettel for having assaulted Alonso, Webber spins round, and double abandonment... What (also) had to be seen... n FIA stewards struck again. n The Renault engine suffered facing Ferrari and Mercedes. n One-stop strategy for almost every driver. n Sauber grabs the position of outsider to Force India. n Pic tickles Caterham. n Unluck for Nico Hülkenberg. Show time... An amazing Grand Prix with dozens of overtakings, fights, hard time for reliability, Pérez starting 12 th who finishes 2 nd on the podium... As in Spa, just a little more suspens on who will win, and it would have been great. We are so choosy!

09/19 01/18 Action! Leading the world championship, ready to make the show for Tifosi in Monza, Alonso had so many mechanical issues during practices. Pole position, which was suppposed to be his, was gone.

They said... What did the main characters of this Grand Prix thought, or said... 10/19 01/18 Michael Schumacher (6 th ) Secretly, I expected a better result. But our first stint was too complicated Felipe Massa (4 th ) We used our tires too fast. And this did not help to reach the podium today Sebastian Vettel (DNF) The penalty I got was decided, so this is it. I have nothing to say about it Lewis Hamilton (1 st ) Winning the race here is one of the most amazing experiences in my carreer. I love that place and this country where I spent several years back when I was a karting driver Sergio Pérez (2 nd ) I fight for Sauber, for myself. Whoever is ahead of me, I do my best to beat him. Hamilton or Alonso... whoever. Not taking into account what people think or what my close future will be made of Fernando Alonso (3 rd ) Last year, my fight vs Vettel was not penalized. This year, there is a penalty, for Vettel. That is all I have to mention Mark Webber (DNF) I had no tires anymore and I made a mistake on Ascari. With a speed above 330 km/h here, I could not see anything anymore, and I prefered not to finish the race Kimi Räikkönen (5 th ) Losing points vs Alonso is not a good thing for the championship Jenson Button (DNF) I was spinning too much starting the race, and then Massa overtook me. I could not beat Lewis but I could have scored some important points. Very disappointing

Report Card 9/20 9/20 Mark Webber n If he still wants to fight for the championship, Mark Webber will have to wake up quickly. And not to spin round in heavy turns such as Ascari. Nico Rosberg n Nico has been dominated for a few races by the Old Schumacher. He does a pretty good Grand Prix but finishes behind Schumi. All of this is not very logical. 11/20 Vitaly Petrov 13/20 Jenson Button 10/20 Jean-Eric Vergne 13/20 Sebastian Vettel 10/20 11/20 Jérôme Kamui Kobayashi 12/20 Paul Di Resta 14/20 Kimi Räikkönen 10/20 Narain Karthikeyan 12/20 11/20 Timo Charles Pic 11/20 Nico Hülkenberg 10/20 Pastor Maldonado D Ambrosio Glock 13/20 Michael Schumacher 10/20 Pedro De La Rosa 11/20 Heikki Kovalainen 12/20 Bruno Senna 12/20 Daniel Ricciardo 16/20 Lewis Hamilton n Not hearing him much, Hamilton got the pole and won the Grand Prix. Pérez and Alonso made the show, Lewis did a great job. 15/20 Felipe Massa n He did a good job in qualifications vs Alonso who was having a hard time with mechanics. Very good start of the race but his leader got back on him.. 19/20 Sergio Pérez 16/20 Fernando ALonso 01/18 13/19 n He really well manages his tires and fights hard too. This mix of both targets is quite impressive. Let s expect his victory soon! n Unlucky during practices, Alonso highlighted the race up to when Pérez overtook him. What a fighter!

Best time for Schumacher, way ahead of Button and Rosberg. Small gaps First hard day for Alonso. Engine issue in the morning, and then problems on brakes and the gearbox in the afternoon. The Spanish driver even rid on grass. Petrov passes him in the gravels. McLaren dominates, with Hamilton ahead of Button, but gaps are really little : eight drivers by two tenths. Red Bull on the back. Hard time for Vettel This time, Vettel s Red Bull is off on the circuit. Issues with the battery. Ahead, gaps are still very tight. Only one thousandth between Hamilton (1 st ) and Alonson (2 nd ). Third great time for Di Resta s Force India. Pérez is 7 th. Off-track for D Ambrosio at the first chicane and Karthilkeyan s too on Variante Ascari.

Off-track Lewis Hamilton remained speechless all weekend long about rumors of his transfer to Mercedes in 2013. Around him, presently, there is not the serinity he needs to make his best on track. 01/18 16/19

17/19 Total in F1 Fuel, lubricants and engine power : results of the optimization Monza, Hall of Speed, is the circuit that requires to the engine the longest periods of full charge and this for every lap : 71%. Gaining power on an engine is one thing, but optimizing the use of this energy to get it as much as possible to wheels and having it used by the driver is another one. At Monza, an engine must perfectly fit with its fuel. This one must have two main criteria : burn quickly and release as much heat as possible in order to push very hard on the piston. Nevertheless, this has to be done with a minimum of hydrocarbon molecules to avoid any overconsumption. This is very important on a circuit made of numerous boosts followed by full charge periods. For the same volume of fuel, its weights on board of the F1 car must be as low as possible. At Monza, 10kg cost more than four tenths of a second. In 2011, we still offered three types of fuel as Philippe Girard, Total F1 s Assistant Scientific Director, explains. In 2012, our optimization policy allowed us to only offer one type of fuel. This one is the result of the goal we had to reduce fuel density and this fuel is used on all circuits. The density has been a major requirement for development. An average-level fuel usually has a density of 0,75. A light fuel is 0,725. This difference of 0,025 on a full tank of 200 liters on an F1 car allows a gain of weight of 5kg. That is to say two tenths per lap, and so more than 10 seconds at the end of the 53 laps of the Grand Prix. And this not taking into account the tenths gained thanks to tire usage reduction. In matter of power, once transmitted to the gearbox, frictions must also be reduced throughout the mechanical chain : bottom of the piston, crankshaft, gearbox, oil pumps, transmission universal joints, wheel bearings All of these products (oil engine, gearbox oil, hydraulic oil, grease ) contribute to the reduction of frictions. As for fuel, there is now only one general type of transmission grease, for the whole season and this, thanks to our work on temperature optimization. All products for an F1 car in 2012 have been optimized taking into account the constraints of two main circuits : Barcelona and Monza. There are no specific products for Monza anymore. And with all this, there is still some job to be done by the engine maker on the engine itself to optimize combustion and the fuel response to the engine for which it was developed. This job always brings a few extra horsepower. http://f1.total.com/ @F1TotalOfficial
