Overview of the Cobb & Co 90th Anniversary and Commemorative Coach Ride and Horse Trail Celebrations. History: This is the 90 th Anniversary of the last service by the Cobb & Co Coach between Yuleba to Surat. Its last stop was at Yuleba on 14th August in 1924, retiring the Cobb & Co service in Australia. Cobb & Co was Australia s most important stage coach company in its day. Established in Melbourne in the 1800 s at the height of the gold rushes, it proved to be very popular as a means of transport to the goldfields. Soon horse-drawn coaches were used to carry passengers throughout Victoria, followed by New South Wales and then into Queensland. Service 177 became the Cobb & Co s most famous route, running from Yuleba through Surat and onto St George. With a total of 203 Km, there were changing stations situated approximately every 25 Km. At each changing station there would be a meal break for the driver and passengers, and a fresh team of horses for the next stage. Celebrations: Friday, 22 nd August, Participants to arrive in Surat and register for the ride. A BBQ will be available for all the hungry travellers and those wanting to catch up with others in Surat. Saturday morning 23 rd August, (early), riders and participants will gather at the Surat show Grounds, a breakfast BBQ will be available for those who wish to purchase breakfast. There will be stops at each Cobb & Co monument which marks the location of the changing stations along the Cobb & Co Way. The first leg (Surat to `Bainbilla ) of the Coach Rides will depart. Morning tea will be available at Frogmore homestead. Lunch will be at the `Bainbilla property and Changing Station. Coach passengers disembark and second leg of Coach Rides will depart (`Bainbilla to `Lorelle Downs ).
Saturday Afternoon Tea will be at Wallabella (Old Stock Route rest area). Saturday evening 23 rd August. Camping overnight with Dinner at `Lorelle Downs. A BBQ & Bar will be available for everyone. Horses will have a chance to be fed and watered ready for the next stage the following day. You will need to be self sufficient for accommodation providing your own, tents / caravans etc. Entertainment will be provided for everyone to enjoy on the night and people will be able to sit around a campfire and relax. Sunday morning 24 th August. Another early rise with breakfast and saddling the horses for the ride into Yuleba.. Morning Tea will be `Gaemond, formally the changing station and state school called `Pleasant Fields. Sunday Lunch and Official Function at the Yuleba Golf Club. Horse riders and the Cobb & Co Coach, on arriving into Yuleba, will ride down the main street of Yuleba then travel out to the Yuleba Rec. Grounds / Yuleba Golf Club. Everyone will be able to attend the festivities and enjoy the entertainment provided. Prizes will be given for various awards for the week end s activities. Guest speaker will be Steve Ralph who has world records in driving stage coaches and he also built the Cobb & Co Coach used in our celebration and usually located in the Surat Museum Participants will be encouraged to dress in period costume and there will be a variety of prizes awarded for different categories, such as youngest rider, oldest rider, best team, best costume etc.

The Yuleba Development Group and the Surat & District Development Association are not for profit organisations formed by locals, in each individual town, as a means to keep their town alive and viable. The goal of the development groups is to encourage and motivate locals to promote, maintain and grow their town, as well as to negotiate with and support the Maranoa Regional Council with decision making at a local level. Nomination Information for Cobb & Co 90 th Anniversary Horse Trail Ride & Celebrations 22 nd 24 th August 2014 Itinerary Friday 22 nd 4pm Nominations open for Ride at the Surat Show Grounds. All riders must nominate to ride on the Friday evening. BBQ, Bar and entertainment will also be available from 6 pm. Saturday 23 rd Breakfast available at the Surat Show Grounds from 5:30 am Pre Ride briefing by Chief Steward, Greg Richardson. Horse riders depart at 7 am from the Surat Show Grounds, going via way of the Surat main street. Coach and passengers depart at 7:00 am Leg 1: Surat to `Bainbilla Lunch may be purchased at `Bainbilla. Leg 2: `Bainbilla to `Lorelle Downs Bainbilla to Wallabella (old Stock Route rest area) for afternoon tea. Wallabella to `Lorelle Downs where BBQ & Bar will be available along with Entertainment including a Balladeer and live music. Nomination Fee for Riders: Adult $35; Child (Primary School age) $20 Coach rides $90 per person for each journey leg. There are 3 legs to the journey. I understand that this event is in a remote location and medical / veterinary assistance may be up to or over 100 Km away and immediate assistance will not be possible. I understand that my signature to this document constitutes a complete and unconditional release of all liability of the Yuleba Development Group & the Surat & District Development Assoc to the greatest extent allowed by law in the event of me, the children in my care or my horse/s, suffering property damage, injury or death.
