MEN S GOLF 2016-17 RECAPS NJCAA Division II National Tournament May 23-26 Jayhawk Golfers compete in Mesa, AZ in the NJCAA Division II National Golf Tournament. The NJCAA Division II Golf Championships concluded in Mesa, AZ on Friday. Jayhawk golfer Glen Kastelic (Mona Shores HS) finished with a 4 round total of 309 and tied for 54th. Tyler Vandenbrand (Grand Haven HS) finished with a 321, good for a tie for 89th and Cam Phelps (Portage Central HS) ended with a 328, good for 107th place. After three rounds of Golf in Mesa, AZ Glen Kastelic is in a tie for 44th with rounds of 81, 72 and 75. Tyler Vandenbrand is tied for 72nd with rounds of 81, 78 and 76 and Cam Phelps is tied for 107th with rounds of 84, 80 and 83. The final round of golf happens on Friday, 5/26/17. Golf at NJCAA Region XII Tournament May 16 @ 9:00 am - 7:00 pm Three MCC Men s Golfers Qualify for National Championship in Arizona Despite narrowly missing out on qualifying for nationals as a team, the MCC men s golf squad had three of its golfers earn a trip to the NJCAA Div. II Championships at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, AZ on May 23-26. Mott CC won the NJCAA Region XII title with a two-day, three-round total of 890 at Bedford Valley CC in Battle Creek on Monday and Tuesday. Oakland CC was second with 897 and Grand Rapids CC third with 899. The top three teams and the top six individuals not on those teams automatically advance to the national championship meet. While the Jayhawks placed fourth with their team total of 910, they took three of the six individual qualifier spots. Cam Phelps (Portage, MI/Central) with a 224 and Tyler Vandenbrand (Grand Haven, MI/Grand Haven) with a 227 had the two lowest individual qualifier scores and Glen Kastelic (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores) posted a 229 to take the fifth individual berth. The guys played great, said MCC Head Coach Marty McDermott. Going into the final round on Tuesday, we knew we had to make up some strokes and Cam shot a 69, Glen a 73 and Tyler a 76 to qualify for nationals. The Muskegon Community College golf team returns to the links today to conclude the NJCAA Region XII Tournament in Battle Creek, MI. Tyler Vandenbrand (Grand Haven HS) shot a two round total of 151. He is followed by Cam Phelps (Portage Central HS) and Trevor Fowler (Reeths-Puffer HS) who both shot 155. Glen Kastelic (Mona Shores HS) finished the day with a 156 and Noah Genson (Mason County Central HS) shot 174. Mott Community College leads after two rounds with a 582. Golf at MCCAA Tournament May 9 @ 9:00 am - 7:00 pm Muskegon Community College finishes 3rd at MCCAA State Championship. The Jayhawks shot 293 in the 3rd round for a 3 round total of 910 to finish 3rd at the MCCAA State Championship held at Port Huron s Elks Golf Course. The 293 was their best round of the year. Trevor Fowler (Reeths-Puffer HS) shot 70, Cam Phelps (Portage Central HS) shot 71, Glen Kastelic (Mona Shores HS) and Noah Genson (Mason County Central HS) both shot 76 and Tyler Vandenbrand (Grand Haven HS) shot 78. Kastelic, Fowler and Phelps earned All-MCCAA Recognition. The Jayhawks advance to play in the Region XII Tournament to be held at Bedford Valley Golf Course in Battle Creek. Muskegon Community College traveled to Donaldson, IN for the Ancilla College Invitational held at Swan Valley Golf Course. The Jayhawk golf team was in action for the Grand Rapids Community college Invitational at Egypt Valley in Ada. Playing conditions were not ideal, with 20 mph winds. Oakland Community College finished at the top of the leader board with a 312 total. MCC finished 5th with a 339. Scoring for the team were Cam Phelps (Portage Central HS) with an 82, Glen Kastelic (Mona Shores HS) with an 84 Tyler Vandenbrand (Grand Haven HS) and Noah Genson (Mason County Central HS) both shooting 86 and Trevor Fowler (Reeths-Puffer HS) with a 96. The Muskegon Community College golf team traveled to Georgetown, KY to compete in the SVSU Invitational. MCC was the only community college in the field. The weather on the first
day was not ideal with 40 degree temperature and 20 mph winds. The Jayhawks shot a 344. On day two MCC scored better with a 319. Four of the five Jayhawk golfers improved their scores; Kastelic and Phelps both shot 76, Genson shot 80, Vandenbrand shot 87 and Fowler shot 91. The match was held at The Nightmare in West Branch, MI. The Jayhawks finished in 4th place with a team total of 310. Mott Community College was the team winner with a 289.
