Repeat, having passed a couple. Devised by Duncan Brown (duncanqlnbrown@tiscali.co.uk) for Dirk and Kay Kölbl shortly after their wedding 2010. Duncan says, Dirk & Kay live in Duisburg, Germany and dance (and teach) with the Essen group a few miles down the road. Both work with computers, but that's about it for my knowledge of their work. I met them when I taught the Easter weekend at the Kuckucksnest in Germany a few years ago. As with most SCDers, they are really generous and kind people. Recommended Tune: The Blackberry Bush (Trad, 3rd & 4th parts D MacLeod). Recorded music suggestion: Mrs MacPherson of Inveran on the Alan Gardiner Highlander CD, LA MAESTRA - 4X32S - Betty Lee Barnes - 2011 A 32 bar strathspey for 4 couples 01-12 C1 dance track figure on own side of set (touching nearer hands where appropriate) in front of C2, behind C3, around C4, (C1 should be just below C4 couple on bar 6), in front of C3, behind Cs to finish back in original position on bar 12 ready for. 13-16 (Modified) half strathspey poussettes, top 2 couples and bottom 2 couples, all dancing in to position on bar 13 & using bar 16 to turn and take promenade hold in center of the set, top two couples facing up, bottom two couples facing down, (the order is 2, 1, 4, 3), ready for 17-22 Two couple allemandes (these are not interlocking allemandes), C2 & C1 dancing up, C3 & C4 dancing down to start, bottom two couples 'unwind' on bar 6 the reverse of the usual pattern (e.g. the lady steps straight forward as the gentleman unwinds to face her, each will then have back to own side of the set) 23-24 All 4 couples, pulling back on right shoulder, curve into sidelines, in order 1, 2, 3, 4 (all on own side of set) 25-32 C1 & C2, RH s across half round; C1 & C3, LH s across half round; C1 & C4 RH s across half round, all cross giving RH to partner (finishing 2, 3, 4, 1). Commissioned by Dale Horn as a tribute to Sonja Horn. The dance begins by showing the many travels and the many friendships the couple have made during their life together, then moves to the patterns of the music created by the Thistle Orchestra under Sonja's direction, and finishes with a flourish of windmills as a tribute to her homeland, The Netherlands. 2 SOUTH STREET HARBORNE - 8X32J - Birmingham Bk #13 Devised by Kenneth Reid. The Harborne class met at South Street Methodist Church Hall for seventeen years. 01-08 C1 dance in slightly & cast off 1 place. C2 step up on bars 3-4. C1 turn LH once round to finish in the middle with W1 facing up, M1 down. 09-12 W1 dances half reel of 3 with C2 passing M2 LS while M1 dance half reel of 3 with C3 passing W3 LS. C2 & C3 dance towards each other to start the reel. 13-16 W1 dances half a reel of 3 with C3 while M1 dances half a reel of 3 with C2 passing LS to begin. C1 finish in the middle of the set, LS to LS, with W1 facing up, M1 facing down. C2 & C3 finish facing each other on the side. 17-24 W1 dance up, casts to her right round W2 s place, then dance up & cast round M2 s place while M1 dances down, cast to his right round M3 s place, then dance down & casts round W3 s place. C1 finish in the middle of the set, LS to LS, facing own sides. Meanwhile C2 & C3 dance rights & lefts giving RH s on the side to begin. 25-32 W1 with C3 and M1 with C2 dance RH s across & LH s across to finish in 2 nd place own side. Repeat, having passed a couple. FURTH O CLYDE - 3X32S - Anna Holden - Birmingham Book #6 A 3X32-bar Strathspey for 3 couples in a 3 couple set. Devised by Anna Holden in 1989, Music by Muriel Johnstone: Furth O. Clyde & Beyond the reaches of the Clyde. 01-08 C1 set, cast behind C2, meet in the middle, dance down between C3 & cast up into 2 nd place own side in 7 steps. C1, C2 & C3, dance in on bar 8 with the left foot, ready for an allemande. C2 step up on bars 3-4. 09-16 Allemande for 3 couples, to finish 3, 1, 2. 17-20 Taking hands on the side all advance 1 step, retire 1 step, then giving RH to partner, cross to opp. side. 21-24 All dance 6 hands round half way to finish on own side in the order 2, 1, 3. 25-32 C1 & C3 Turn and Progress as detailed below, to finish 2, 3, 1. Turn and Progress 25-26 C1 & C3 turn partner RH ¾ to finish in the middle, women facing down and men facing up. 27-30 Half a reel of 4. 31-32 C1 & C3 turn partner RH ¾ to finish on own side, having progressed. AND HAPPY MEET AGAIN - 4X32S - Ron Bradbury - Birmingham Book #9 A 32-bar Strathspey for 4 couples. Devised by Ron Bradbury remembering those who join the George Fleming Band on holiday. Happy have we met, happy may we part, and happy meet again. 01-08 Pick up chain for 4 couples. 01-02 C1 cross RH. 03-04 W1 & M2, M1 & W2 change LH on the side. 05-06 W1 & M3, M1 & W3 change RH on the side while C2 cross RH. 07-08 W1 & M4, M1 & W4, W2 & M3, M2 & W3, change LH on the side, men omit polite turn. Order now 3,2,4,1, with C2 & C1 on the opposite side. 09-16 C3 with C2, C4 with C1, dance a ladies chain. 17-20 C2 & C1 (in 2 nd & 4 th places) dance half a figure of 8 up through C3 & C4. 21-24 C2 & C4 (in the centre) set & link. Order now 3,4,2,1. 25-32 C3 & C4, C2 & C1 dance a demi-tournee to finish 4,3,1,2. Demi-tournee 25-25 C3 & C4 dance towards partner. M3 pulls LS back, W4 pulls RS back to finish in promenade hold, C3 facing men s side, C4 facing ladies side, men shoulder to shoulder. 26-28 The 2 couples dance half way round ACW. The men turn their partners across in front of them, ladies finish back to back facing partners up & down the dance. 29-30 Releasing hands, all set. Order 4,3,1,2. 31-32 C4 with RH, C3 with LH turn ¾ to own side. C2 & C1 dance demi-tournee similarly. Workshop Dances - September 10, 2011 KATANNUTA 4X40R - Gail Sibley & Richard Bennett. Published in the Katannuta Book by the Salt Springs Scottish Country Dancers. 01-08 C1 dance a figure of 8 round C2. 09-14 W1 with the LH half turns W2, giving RH half turns W3, giving LH half turns W4. while M1, giving RH, half turns M2, giving LH half turns M3, giving RH half turns M4. 15-16 C1 set while turning into place (W1 pulling back left shoulder, M1 pulling back right shoulder). 17-20 All 4 couples, giving RH s, turn with C1 staying in centre. 21-24 C1 lead up & cross over at the top to end facing out in 1 st place on opposite side. C2, C3 & C4 step down on bars 23-24. 25-30 W1 giving LH half turns M2, giving RH half turns M3, giving LH half turns M4 while M1, giving RH half turns W2, giving LH half turns W3, giving RH half turns W4. 31-32 C1, giving RH s, cross to own sides in 4 th place. 33-40 All 4 couples dance 8 hands round & back. This dance is dedicated to the executive and members of the Salt Springs Scottish Country Dance club from 2007. Its name comes from two Indonesian words meaning: 1) to know what has been done for you. 2) appreciating what has been done. Katannuta therefore means appreciating what has been done for you.

THE RESTLESS GHOST - 8X32R - Angela Bulteel 1997 A 32-bar reel for 3 couples in a 4-couple set Recommended tunes: Tam Lin (The Glasgow Keel). Drowsy Maggie. 01-04 C1, dancing in to meet, cast 1 place; C2 step up. 05-08 C1 turn the C3 once round, ladies LH s, men RH s: finish facing 1 st corners. 09-12 C1 set to 1 st corners & change places RH s, the corners moving in to face the next corners, i.e. M2 facing M3, W3 facing W2. 13-16 C2 & C3 couples dance ½ a reel of 4 on the 2 nd corner diagonal, finish facing the same person again in the opposite corner. C1 dance CW ½ way round the set. Repeat bars 9-16 on the other diagonal with different people. i.e.:- 17-20 W2 & W3 also M2 & M3 set & change places RH s. M3 & W2 moving in to face the C1 in the next corner position; 21-24 M3, W2, & C1 dance ½ a reel of 4 on the 1 st corner diagonal, finish facing the same person again in the opposite corner. M2 & W3 dance CW half way round the set. 25-28 M3 & W2 set to the C1. Giving RH s to C1, M3 & W2 dance into the corner positions, while C1 dance to face each other up & down the set. 29-32 C1 turn right hands 1¼ times to their own sides in 2 nd place: C2 & C3 facing diagonally set, pull RS back & dance round ¼ CW. Repeat, having passed a couple Angela Bulteel 1997 Editor's note: This is a difficult dance, and the tune should not be rushed. MONICA S WAY - 4X32J - Katannuta Bk/ #9 - Gail Sibley A 32-bar jig for four couples in a four-couple set. C3 & C4 begin the dance on the opposite side. 01-08 C1 with C2 and C3 with C4 dance progressive double figure of eights. To begin C1 & C4 giving RH s, cross while C2 & C3 set. (Finish 2143, C4 & C3 still on opposite sides). 09-16 C1 & C4 dance set & rotate. 1-2 C1 & C4 set on sides with near hands joined. 3-4 C1 & C4, pulling back right shoulder, dance round 1 place CW to finish with M1 & W4 facing down & W1 & M4 facing up. 5-6 C1 & C4, giving RH s, change places with partners. 7-8 All continue to chase round CW finish W1 & M4 facing down on the women s side and W4 & M1 facing up on the men s side. (Fig 1). 17-20 W1 & M4, and W4 and M1, in tandem, dance half diagonal reels of 4 with W3 & W2. The dancing couples change leader on bar 18. 21-24 M4 & W1, and M1 & W4, in tandem, dance half diagonal reels of 4 with M3 & M2. (Fig 2). The dancing couple change leader on bar 22. C1 & C4 finish the reel in the centre on the set. (Fig 3). 25-28 Passing partners by the right, W1 & M4, dance out to the women s side while M1 & W4 dance out to the men s side, dancing out beyond the sidelines & curving by the right to place. (Finish 3142, C4 & C2 on the opposite side). 29-32 All 4 couples advance & retire. Devised for Monica Roots on the occasion of her retirement in 2007 from six years of teaching on Salt Spring Island. 3

Devised by Jeffery Green (jeffery.green@wideband.net.au), Suggested recorded music: 'Red House Revisited', Vallin Suite 1, Track 1. (Neil Barron). 01-04 C1 in both sets, lead down (right hands) to cross below C3, cast up to 2 nd on opposite sides. 05-08 C1(s), W1 with C3, M1 with C2, dance RH s across. Finish facing 3 rd corners. 09-16 C1(s) half reel of 4 with 3 rd corners, pass right shoulders, then half reel of 4 with 4 th corners. C1(s) again pass right shoulders, to finish facing inwards in 2 nd place on opposite sides. 17-24 C1(s) from the two sets dance full reel of 4 across the sets. Meanwhile, C3 & C2 set to partner, turn RH with partners once right round, & dance ½ reels of 4 across the sets. C2 & C3are now in the opposite set, in 3 rd and st places, on own sides. 25-30 C1(s) cross RH s with partner, then cast to their right (woman around 3rd woman, man around 2nd man) to dance in the top or bottom of the set. 31-32 Both C1(s) dance RH s across, half way round. 33-34 C1(s) retain RH s in the star, and join LH s with the dancers in the 'inside' lines of the two sets. M1 will join with M2 or W2 (in 3 rd place), W1 will join with M3 or W3 (in 2nd place). These dancers all set. (Fig. 1) 35-40 All drop hands. In the left hand set (as viewed from the top), M1 followed by his partner dance down, across below C2 (in 3 rd place), cast up 1 place on the ladies side, & the man crosses to 2 nd place on his own side. In the right hand set, W1 followed by her partner dance up, across above C3 (in 1st place), cast off on the men's side, & the woman dances crosses to 2 nd on her own side. (Fig. 2) All finish in the opposite set, in order 3, 1, 2. Repeat from new places. THE HAMMOCK JIG - 3X32J - Katannuta Bk/ #6 - Richard Bennett Devised by Richard Bennett. 01-08 C1 with C2 & C3 dance reels of 3 on the opposite sides of the set. 09-16 C1 with C2 & C3 dance reels of 3 on their own side of the set. 17-24 C1 lead down the middle & up. 25-28 All 3 couples turn partner with the RH. 29-32 C1 cast off to 3 rd place. C2 & C3 step up on bars 29-30. Finish 2,3,1). In the summer of 2007, club members or friends often hosted dance parties in their gardens. One such evening I had planned to each a dance with cross over mirror reels but most people were enjoying the sun, lounging in hammocks, enjoying the food and wine. I persuaded three couples away from the food and wine and came up with the Hammock Jig. SNOW ANGELS - 4X32S - Katannuta #12 - Gail Sibley A 32-bar Strathspey to four couples in a four-couple set. Music used: Fill the Fetters - Boston Branch 50 years. 01-08 C2 & C3 dance a tournée while C1 & C4 chase clockwise around the set back to place. 09-12 M1 & M3, M2 & M4, also W3 & W2 set to each other &, with both hands, turn once round to end facing a new person. 13-16 W1 & W3, W2 & W4, also M3 & M2 set to each other and, with both hands, turn once round. 17-24 Taking hands on the sides, all four couples set. C1 & C3, C2 & C4 dance three-quarters rights & lefts. (Finish 3142). 25-32 All four couples flow into 8 hands round. On bar 28, all pivot on left foot & pulling back right shoulder, remake the circle to finish the 8 hands round. The dance was written after classes were cancelled due to snow. I started thinking about snow angels and since we had been practicing the tournée, it seemed like the perfect formation to work the dance around. Workshop Dances - September 10, 2011

C1 dance a half figure of 8 round C2. 17-24 C1 dance half rights & lefts on the diagonal. To begin C1, giving RH s, change places with their 1 st corners. C1 dance half rights & lefts on the diagonal. To begin C1 giving RH s, change places with their partner s 2 nd corner. 25-32 All 3 couples advance & retire, C1 turn with the RH while C2 & C3, giving RH s, turn 1½ times to finish on their own sides. (Finish 312). 5 All Saints by the Sea is the church where the Salt Springs Scottish Country Dance Club members meet every Monday on their regular dance night. Published in the Katannuta Book by the Salt Springs Scottish Country Dancers. 01-08 C1 dance a figure of 8 round C2. 09-14 W1 with the LH half turns W2, giving RH half turns W3, giving LH half turns W4. while M1, giving RH, half turns M2, giving LH half turns M3, giving RH half turns M4. 15-16 C1 set while turning into place (W1 pulling back left shoulder, M1 pulling back right shoulder). 17-20 All 4 couples, giving RH s, turn with C1 staying in centre. 21-24 C1 lead up & cross over at the top to end facing out in 1 st place on opposite side. C2, C3 & C4 step down on bars 23-24. 25-30 W1 giving LH half turns M2, giving RH half turns M3, giving LH half turns M4 while M1, giving RH half turns W2, giving LH half turns W3, giving RH half turns W4. 31-32 C1, giving RH s, cross to own sides in 4 th place. 33-40 All 4 couples dance 8 hands round & back. This dance is dedicated to the executive and members of the Salt Springs Scottish Country Dance club from 2007. Its name comes from two Indonesian words meaning: 1) to know what has been done for you. 2) appreciating what has been done. Katannuta therefore means appreciating what has been done for you.
