Although it is only #5, we have been in the Simmental purebred industry since 1973 and the Angus division was added in 2002. The strength of our operation is the cow herd and an unwavering belief in the type of cattle that the industry needs to be profitable. The top end of our heifers is always kept for replacements, allowing us to speed up genetic improvement and put extreme pressure on culling. Udders, disposition and feet are at the top of that list, as we want our customers to know that they won t be adding unwanted traits with a bull purchase. For the most part, the bottom sides of the pedigrees are predominantly Spring Creek breeding. Our customers can be confident that the culling has been done and that they can buy with confidence. This year we are proud to include offerings from Black Sand Cattle Co. and Sun Rise Simmentals. They have been very good customers and Spring Creek pedigrees are prevalent in their herds. We share common philosophies and a passion for the seed stock industry. I appreciate their input in every aspect of this business and know that they will add value to the sale. Should any purchased bull fail to be a satisfactory breeder or unable to service a cow or heifer, he will be replaced with a bull of equal value. Should this not be possible, an adjustment will be made to reflect the value of the bull in question or a credit will be given towards the purchase of another bull. One way or another we will provide you with a sound breeding bull. However, we will not provide a replacement or adjustment for physical injury or mismanagement, nor will we be responsible for any cost above the purchase price of the bull. Bearing this in mind, we stress the importance of insurance on your bulls. We have always done our best to ensure that your needs are met and that you are satisfied. Settlement, Delivery and After-Sale Options: Option A: Purchasers wishing to pick up their bull on sale day will receive a $50.00 discount per individual purchased. Settlement will be made in full unless other arrangements have been made. Option B: Purchasers may choose to leave their bull(s) on our ranch until their breeding season. These bulls must be insured while they are at our ranch. An insurance agent will be available on sale day. I have a lot of respect for what has been done here at SpringCreek, and as you look through my pedigrees you will see the MBJ prefix runs deep as it has been the baseline for developing the purebred herd at BlackSand. My mentorship continues on today with Brian but has really grown into a great friendship with common interests and passion for the cattle business. We are relatively new to the purebred business but have been working quietly on our herd over the last six years. We have been selling bred heifers with Spring Creek in Virden the past three falls and bulls out of our yard for three years as well. Our herd has grown to where we are expecting roughly 60 purebred calves this spring. We are focusing on moderation in our cows, that are easy doing with good dispositions, feet, legs and udders and that can be fertile under a high roughage based ration. We have also focused on some convenience traits for customers with 100% of our cows either red or black with increasingly more being homozygous polled. For our first year as consignors we have decided to bring a group of black bulls, that we are proud of, and that should go on to be very functional for their new owners. These bulls are being developed on a balanced ration to grow more naturally with the hopes of increased longevity and structural soundness. Tenderness: The IGENITY Profile score for tenderness represents an animal s genetic potential for tenderness, as measured by Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF), with 10 the most tender and 1 the least tender. Lower shear force means more tender beef. In a group of animals with an IGENITY tenderness score of 10, 2.27 lbs less shear force is required than a group of animals with a score of 1. This means higher IGENITY scores represent animals that are more tender than those with lower scores. Marbling Score: Higher IGENITY scores for marbling equal greater genetic potential for marbling. In a group of animals with an IGENITY Profile score of 10 for Marbling, the average marbling can be expected to be 96.0 points greater than in a group of animals with a score of 1. Beef Quality for Marbling uses a 1 to 999 point scale in the Beef Grading system. Marbling scores reflect how much intramuscular fat is present in the carcasses, and thus the potential to grade Canada AAA. Therefore the 96 unit range from IGENITY Profile scores 1 to 10 equals almost one full quality grade. Quality Grade (Canada AAA or higher): Higher IGENITY scores for Quality Grade equal greater genetic potential to grade Canada AAA. The IGENITY profile for Quality Grade reflects the percent Canada AAA. In a group of animals with an IGENITY Profile score of 10 for Quality Grade, you would expect 53.7% more animals to grade Canada AAA than a group of animals that score 1. Yield Grade: Higher IGENITY Yield Grade scores equal a genetic potential for a higher Yield Grade. Since higher Yield Grade values equate to more fat and/or less muscle, animals with higher IGENITY Profile scores for YG are expected to be, on average, genetically fatter and/or lighter muscled. A group of animals with an IGENITY profile score of 10 for Yield Grade can be expected to receive a Yield Grade score that is 1.17 units of yield grade higher than a group of animals that receives a score of 1. A Yield Grade 1 (YG1) relates to the lower IGENITY profile scores, while a Yield Grade 3 (YG3) reflects higher IGENITY profile scores. Average Daily Gain: A key profitability measurement for any operation is measured in lbs. of gain per day. The IGENITY profile results for Average Daily Gain identifies an animal s genetic potential for rate of gain, for both calves and post-weaning growth. Animals which score a 10 will gain an additional 0.81 lbs. per day over animals which score a 1 which means a 166 lb. difference over 205 days. Back Fat Thickness: In a group of animals with an IGENITY profile score of 10 for Fat Thickness, the average fat thickness is expected to be 0.231 inches (almost quarter of an inch) greater than in a group of animals that score 1. Lower IGENITY profile scores indicate less external fat, while higher scores reflect more external fat. Ribeye Area: In a group of animals with an IGENITY profile score of 10 for Ribeye Area, the average ribeye area is expected to be 2.12 square inches greater than in a group of animals that score 1. Lower IGENITY profile scores reflect smaller ribeye areas, with higher scores reflecting larger ribeye areas. Heifer Pregnancy Rate: Heifer Pregnancy Rate includes a heifer s chance at becoming pregnant over a normal breeding season, relative to other heifers. Stayability: Stayability indicates the chance a heifer will remain in the herd until at least six years old, relative to other animals. Calving Ease: Maternal Calving Ease is measured as the percentage of unassisted births a higher value indicates greater calving ease. Docility: Calm cattle are nut just about handler safety calm cattle eat more, have better response to vaccinations and preconditioning, and are more tender. The IGENITY profile for docility indicates the animal s genetic potential to be extremely calm, or to have calm offspring. Higher IGENITY scores this this trait indicate a higher likelihood that calves possess acceptable behaviour. NR: Some samples may look normal, but still are unable to produce acceptable results. This often occurs due to contaminants that are undetectable to the naked eye; dirt, mold, manure, or other foreign matter.
