Transcription:

From the beginning, the property at West Fork was a special piece of land. A combination of natural features that included trees, wetlands, streams, high hills and the West Fork of the San Jacinto River made this a place where a great golf course could be designed. To add to the natural features, our clients, Suzan Taylor and Mack Brown, gave us great latitude in the routing of the course to best take advantage of the property while creating value for the real estate. As with most courses today, our task was to find the best balance of working with the site, enhancing the real estate and creating challenging golf. Knowing that this is to be a public course that will be played by a wide range of golfers, we wanted to be certain that the shots from the tees and approaches to the greens were well described. We feel that players should be presented a range of strategies for play of each hole. The fun of the game is making that choice and then properly executing the shot required. The game is also greatly enhanced if it can be played in a setting that is aesthetically pleasing. We believe that West Fork has accomplished what we, as architects, set out to do. Even better, we think it fulfills the needs of our clients and the golfing public will receive the course with enthusiasm. Favor the left side of the fairway for the best approach angle to the green. 387 364 292 265 HCP: 15 Copyright 2004 The HoleView Corporation

37 yards 32 yards 49 84 97 213 173 126 86 This par 4 is a dogleg left and again your tee shot will be hit over wetlands. There is more room on the left side than it seems, so aim your tee shot to the left of the right fairway bunker. 93 145 126 215 137 179 155 294 253 206 166 250 215 155 101 236 199 141 86 284 297 115 168 221 144 199 On this par 5, a great tee shot to the straightaway fairway will position you to go for the green in two. Beware of the river on the right lurking in the trees. The safe play is to lay up in front of the left side bunker, leaving yourself a short approach shot. 432 393 344 305 HCP: 3 The palmetto flats adjacent to the hole are frequented by deer, rabbits and coyotes. The San Jacinto River is lined with bamboo and river birch, sycamore, oak and elm trees, all favorite nesting sites for waterfowl and wildlife. 533 497 445 388 HCP: 5

298 269 225 171 93 61 120 32 yards Native grasses and flowers are found to the right of the tees. Wetlands are found to the right of the fairway. 38 yards 215 197 162 93 147 170 Play your drive toward the bunkers on the left on this par 4 that slightly doglegs to the right. Wetlands border the hole all the way down the right side. 177 159 124 61 Yardage will be hard to gauge on this par 3 since you must carry the wetlands. Ladies will get a break! 394 367 323 268 HCP: 13 Fallen trees support wildlife by supplying insect food and nesting sources. 200 181 147 77 HCP: 11

34 yards 36 yards 327 292 261 221 204 169 138 96 Here s another dogleg left par 4 that requires you to carry wetlands from the tee. The best tee shots will be positioned to the left of the bunker. Beware of the hazard behind the green. 104 127 107 180 128 227 165 307 272 241 198 294 242 214 179 268 216 186 152 125 148 175 123 161 212 135 186 242 193 167 134 188 140 114 85 Two bunkers sit in the middle of the fairway on this straightaway par 4. Shorter hitters should play down the left side, avoiding those bunkers. Longer hitters can carry the bunkers and should favor the right side, but need to beware of the lake. 422 396 355 325 HCP: 7 Wood ducks frequently roost in the wetland slough by the bridge. The lake is popular with waterfowl, wading and shore birds. Be sure to look for alligators. 408 361 333 298 HCP: 9

Avoid the enormous bunker to the right of the green. 385 This par 5 is the toughest hole at West Fork! Strategic planning is required for you to be successful. Hit a straight tee shot to avoid the bunkers that line both sides of the fairway. A great tee shot may put you in position to reach the green in two. 177 168 142 117 HCP: 17 The wetland plant species include buttonbush, baccharis and beautyberry, excellent food sources for birds. The meadows surrounding this hole are ideal hunting grounds for hawks, falcons and kestrels. 555 497 467 433 HCP: 1

Favor the right side of the fairway to avoid the hidden creek on the left. This tricky green has a lot of slope. The creek on the left provides water for irrigation and is frequented by raccoons, opossum and bobcats. 403 362 327 275 HCP: 10

243 209 173 141 180 135 187 122 141 157 173 38 yards 277 242 209 178 262 227 193 166 27 yards 169 143 116 84 196 170 145 115 The prevailing wind on this par 4 is from left to right. With a bunker on the right, it s best to favor the left side from the tee. Ospreys frequently sit in the dead oak tree by the tees and feed on fish from the lake. Again, look for alligators. On this par 3, a shot that is slightly short is okay since the prevailing wind will be blowing your ball toward the lake most of the time. With a bunker back left and the lake on the right, a shot to the middle of the green is the smart play. 429 389 341 319 HCP: 4 The lake provides a corridor connecting the river and the interior wetlands. 180 151 130 98 HCP: 18

312 278 233 197 239 205 160 126 117 For a short par 4, this hole is one of the hardest at West Fork. There are two options; lay up short of the big tree or drive past it. You then hit to a small green with a severe slope on the left and the river on the right. Good luck! 95 182 90 147 132 34 yards 239 205 160 122 197 163 118 81 32 yards 294 268 225 185 240 212 190 223 164 112 121 135 173 87 111 284 264 224 189 Two good shots on this par 5 will get long hitters on the green if they keep their tee shots out of the wetlands. The river guards the right side of the green. 342 308 263 230 HCP: 12 The river borders the right side of the hole and wetlands are found to the left of the tee. Great Blue Herons nest in the trees along the river. 504 476 434 392 HCP: 6

286 253 204 175 133 157 123 210 174 171 192 33 yards 296 263 214 185 236 206 163 135 217 186 142 115 39 yards 297 269 232 195 240 212 177 141 200 172 137 101 68 123 163 42 111 143 73 117 164 96 142 324 296 259 220 284 256 219 180 This pretty par 4 doglegs slightly to the right. The elevated green has a false front so think about hitting more club than you normally would on the approach. The creek, river and lake support many types of wildlife. This par 4 should be a breather if you drive the fairway. Be aware that a creek runs just in front of the green. 416 383 342 312 HCP: 8 Note the native area to the left of the tees and the seasonal creek that separates the fairway from the green. 364 336 300 259 HCP: 14

215 195 168 138 35 yards 180 160 134 106 26 yards 236 214 186 146 120 174 227 332 97 182 204 Proper club selection is critical when hitting to the elevated green on this par 3. Back left pin placements are difficult to get close to; you re better off playing for the center of the green. 219 197 169 129 349 This par 5 is a three-shot hole for most players. With a bunker left and out-of-bounds right, a straight tee shot is needed. If you hit a great second shot, you can carry the hazard short of the green, but the smart play is to lay up in front of it. 197 178 151 127 HCP: 16 Native grasses are found to the left of the tees. Native grasses and flowers are found along the entire left side of this hole. 565 546 514 474 HCP: 2
