November 2014 Kathryn Wickstrom, Editor FROM PRESIDENT DR. TREVOR MILLER Hello All, I would like to start this communication by first introducing myself to the membership that I have not yet had the opportunity to meet. My Name is Trevor R. Miller and I am the newly elected President of G.G.A.H.A. Professionally I am a Doctor of Chiropractic and I practice in the town of Sebastopol, where I also live and raise Arabians. My involvement with Arabians has been life long and extensive. I am the third generation in my family to own and breed Arabians, as my Grandparents (Tom and Arlene Miller of Miller Arabians) started their record breaking breeding program over 60 years ago. As a junior exhibitor and adult amateur exhibitor I have had the opportunity to show all over the country culminating many national championships over several divisions. As a family, Miller Arabians is still one of the leading all time breeders of national winners in the working western division, and our stallion still holds the record of all time leading sire in the same division. Needless to say that the love for horses, specifically Arabians, truly does run in my blood, and I wish to share this passion with the club as the serving President. I have a sincere and genuine love for the Arabian breed and I look forward to serving the club in every capacity I can. Going forward I hope to see the club grow and prosper, be it with the annual show and/or increased club participation, as all members are welcomed and encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas. Sincerely: Dr. Trevor R. Miller Dear GGAHA member, We hope you like the new look of our newsletter! HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all GGAHA members and their families. Once a horse allows you inside his heart, he ll show you what s inside yours. by Mark Alan Keyser IN THIS ISSUE: PRESIDENT MILLER GGAHA OFFICERS YOUTH NATIONALS US NATIONALS - 2014 GRAND NATIONALS GGAHA TRAIL COORDINATOR SANTA YNEZ FOAL FESTIVAL

Dr. John Milton Sparks III, DVM - Obituary June 4, 1935 - November 9, 2014 Dr. John Milton Sparks III, DVM passed away November 9, 2014. He was born in Phoenix, Arizona June 4, 1935. His childhood years were spent on the Mule Shoe Ranch in Hillside, Arizona, then moved to a farm in Phoenix. At the age of ten, he joined a 4H Club, grew field crops and raised dairy and beef animals. He was awarded 4H Clubs National Field Crops Champion. Losing a beef animal sparked his desire to become a Veterinarian at a very young age. John enrolled at Arizona State University where he majored in Livestock Production and received a commission in the U. S. Air Force. He then attended Colorado State University receiving his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. Following graduate education he entered the U.S. Air Force as a Veterinarian in Natick Massachusetts, there his practice included animals used in the U.S. space program. Dr. Sparks returned to Arizona after serving his country to begin his Veterinary practice. He opened the Bar S Animal Clinic in Wickenburg, choosing this dude ranch area because of the large number of horses. His practice was both small and large animals, but equine was his passion. There he assisted in the development of the Budkirk Nature Plate horse shoe, and loved the Desert Caballeros trail ride. He was a Community Leader in 4H Club work for ten years, a longtime member of the Wickenburg Rotary Club. A Wickenburg Planning and Zoning member and was a Wickenburg Community Hospital Board Director. In 1975, he left his Wickenburg practice and moved to New Jersey to begin a specialty in equine medicine serving the race tracks on the east coast. Two years later, John returned to Scottsdale, Arizona to continue his equine practice. He served all breeds of horses but focused on working with breeders of Arabians. He and his wife Karen participated in Arabian horse shows throughout the U.S. and Canada, showing their own horses, and winning several national titles. He joins his grandparents, John Milton and Alice Sparks, DL and Nellie Bouse and mother Nellie Jean Burger and is survived by his loving wife Karen, his two sons John Milton Sparks IV (Julie) of Chandler, Arizona, Jim Sparks (Judy) of Congress, Arizona, three grandchildren John Milton V, Jake and Jesse Sparks and his great grandchildren Ryker and Paisley. Dr. Sparks is also survived by his brother Dr. Richard Leland Sparks of Laguna Beach California and his wife Susan along with nephews Richard D and David L Sparks; nieces Daryl Prietto and Laurel Sparks and five grand nephews and nieces. Dr. Sparks will be greatly missed by his family, friends and professional acquaintances. Visitation will be held at Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary, 8555 East Pinnacle Peak Road Scottsdale, Arizona 85255. Public viewing Friday, November 14, 5-8PM, with services Saturday, November 15, 2PM. In lieu of flowers, please submit a donation to the Arabian Horsemen s Distress Fund, 236 Henry Sanford Road, Bridgewater, CT 06752
Dr. Trevor Miller - Santa Ynez Foal Festival - 2014 Our President, participating at the highly competitive Foal Festival in Santa Ynez, CA on October 4-5, 2014. These foals are bred and/or owned by Miller Arabians and Arlene Padilla. KAHILI ZEE (pictured to the left) is the 8th generation of the Miller Arabian breeding program, as well as the first union of Miller Arabians and the astounding Varian Arabians breeding program. It is not very common for two American breeding programs that are both 60 years old to be brought together. We are very excited for the colt s future. KAHILI ZEE (Mexicali Mac V x Zee s Kopy Kat) PRIMA ALLURIANA M, (photo to the right) is one of a handful of Shanghai daughters in the U.S., as her sire is in Europe and only available via frozen semen. Being a late foal, Prima held her own, capturing a Bronze Championship at the Foal Festival in the filly class. Additionally, she won the most Beautiful Foal in the on line photo contest by the Santa Ynez Foal Festival committee. PRIMA ALLURIANA M (Shanghai EA x Show Blessed)
