YMCA KARATE TRAINING PROGRAM FAQ S INSTRUCTOR: Bill Mays, Black Belt Instructor ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Bill Mays began his Karate studies in 1962. In 1965 Bill became a staff member of Oklahoma Academy of Judo and Karate. While there, Bill studied Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate from Ichiro Takahata and Akira Kawakami. In 1969 Bill set up several Karate branch schools in the Midwest and was a Karate pioneer to the area. Bill has traveled to Japan and studied under the world Karate Master Seikichi Toguchi. Other accomplishments for Bill are Past President Tokai Juku International Karate Association, Past Advisor to United States Air Force Academy Karate Club, Advisor to University of Kansas Karate Club, Advisor to Hoseii University (Todkyo, Japan) Karate Club. What is Karate? Karate is a training and self defense system developed over many years. This system is widely used by military and police for self defense tactics. Karate is one of the many Martial Art Systems taught throughout the world. What will I learn from taking Karate? Karate training includes body conditioning. A special set of exercises and stretching is a part of the Karate training. Techniques used in karate are such things as upward blocks to protect the head area, middle blocks to protect the mid section of the body and down blocks to protect the lower region. These techniques are taught slowly and correctly to the student. Secondly attacking techniques such as kicks, punches and strikes are taught. Lastly, proper foot movement and balance are also taught. Techniques will be explained and demonstrated in clear terms. The instructor will practice the techniques with the students to help them master the techniques. The karate training will give the student the benefits of 1) conditioning the body to a higher level of strength and body awareness 2) Self defense tactics 3) Self confidence and self-discipline. What kind or style of karate is this? The style of Karate is called Goju Ryu and comes from the island of Okinawa. Okinawa is an island country near Japan. It is a fighting system taken from systems in ancient China. Do I need special clothing or equipment? For private lessons student needs to wear is comfortable workout clothing. Group sessions require the student to purchase a karate uniform. Can I earn my Black Belt in this Karate Program? Yes. If the student practices diligently and follows the program he or she should be qualified to take the black belt exam in about 3 years of training. The belt system of Goju Ryu is as follows: White Beltbeginner level, Green Belt-intermediate level, Brown Belt-advanced level and Black Belt-graduate level. To earn these levels the student is graded on proficiency of the various techniques. These techniques are included in many choreographed drills that the student must perform at each level. Do I have to earn my black belt to be in the program? NO. Many students come to learn some basic self defense skills. If a person wants to learn just a few self defense techniques, perhaps private lessons would be best. If a black belt is your goal, group lessons are advised or a combination of both. Do I have to be in good physical condition to start? The instructor will assist you in getting into the proper physical condition. He will move at a pace to accommodate all levels. Does a persons age make a difference? All ages can train and learn Karate. The instructor has taught students from 7 to 70 in his career. All people can enjoy the benefit of practicing Karate.
