Table Tennis Victoria is the governing organisation for the sport of table tennis in Victoria. The body is affiliated with the national body (Table Tennis Australia), which in turn is affiliated with the international body (International Table Tennis Federation). The state body can trace its humble beginnings back to 1925; however, the body was not officially known as the Victorian Table Tennis Association until 1930. However, table tennis had been introduced to Australia prior to 1925 historical records show that the sport was played before the 1900 s, primarily under the control of the YMCA. Indeed, early records show that a Ping Pong Championships were held in Adelaide, South Australia in 1898 and The Brisbane Courier published an article on 6 June 1902 highlighting the holding of a local YMCA table tennis tournament held in Brisbane which attracted over 170 entries. Whilst the game was played in many of the major cities in the early 1900 s, it was but a temporary craze which subsided after several years. On 11 July 1925, The Age newspaper records the momentous inception of the Victorian state body in the following article: PING PONG. ASSOCIATION FORMED IN MELBOURNE. The indoor game of ping pong, or table tennis, is coming into popular favor again, and some city firms and institutions have had tables erected, and are making the game a feature of their social programmes. At a meeting of delegates held at the Y.M.C.A. this week it was decided to form a ping-pong association. Fourteen teams have entered. These have been divided into two grades, and will compete in a pennant competition of home and away matches, to be played every Wednesday evening. Two more teams will be admitted to B grade should their applications be received immediately. The draw for the first round is as under:- A Grade: North British v. Harbor Trust, Commonwealth Bank v. Y.M.C.A., National Mutual v. Brighton Tennis, James Hardie and Co. v. Broken Hill Pty Ltd. B Grade:- Broken Hill Pty. Ltd. v. St. Stephen s, Y.M.C.A. v. Camberwell, Commonwealth Bank v. Trustees & Executors. On tables of firstnamed clubs. By 1928, the state body ran under the banner of the Melbourne Table Tennis Association which is evidenced by an article published by The Argus newspaper on 14 October 1927: Page 7

TABLE TENNIS ASSOCIATION The Melbourne Table Association will hold its third annual championships at the Y.M.C.A., Prince s Bridge, commencing October 21. Whilst there are no reliable historical records describing the governance structure of the new body, several newspaper articles record Mr A. W. Champion as the first honorary secretary. By 1930, the body had adopted the name of the Victorian Table Tennis Association and The Age newspaper on 15 October 1930 carried this advertisement for the Victorian Open: TABLE TENNIS Commencing on Tuesday, 28th inst., the Victorian Table Tennis Association will inaugurate its fifth annual open tournament. The contests will take place at the Y.M.C.A., Prince s Bridge, and play will commence at 7 p.m. The tournament will be confined to four evenings, viz., 28th, 29th and 31st October and 3 November. Entries will be received up to 6 p.m. on 21st inst. The body published its first annual report in 1930, which described the election of Mr A Williams to the office of President as a move in the right direction. The services provided by Mr Williams to the state association were described as invaluable and it is fitting to note that the first President of V.T.T.A. went onto become the longest serving President spanning the period 1930 to 1947 (activities being suspended between 1942 1945 due to World War 2) and was inducted as a Life Member in 1949. The Australian Board of Control (later known as Table Tennis Australia) was formed in 1933. In the same year, the first Australian Championships were played at Melbourne, with teams from Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia participating, and only men players competed. Affiliation with the lttf occurred in 1936, and in the same year the second national championship meeting was held, with events for women added to the program. In 1961 Australia was granted the option to hold the World Championships in Melbourne in 1967. However, in 1966, the ITTF took the championships away from Australia because the Australian Government advised that it could not guarantee the provision of entry visas to any players from North Vietnam, and the championships were re-allocated to Stockholm. Pennant completion was now regularly played in Victoria with many metropolitan and country affiliates holding their own local competitions. The State Pennant came to be dominated by a number of teams, particularly St Kilda Cricket, Coburg, Albert Park and in the early 2000 s by Dandenong. Page 8

The state body has been conducting the annual Victorian Open tournament since 1925 and with many champions over the years, three players stand out from the rest. Suzy Javor won the Ladies Singles title from 1957 to 1967 an astonishing 11 consecutive times. This was matched by Jian Fang Lay in 1995, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014. This record has only been recently matched by Simon Gerada who has won the Mens Singles title on 11 occasions 1999 to 2006, 2010, 2013 and 2015. Returning to state body governance, there have been many persons who have sat on the Board as a committee or executive member and indeed, there are now 28 persons inducted as Life Members. However, it would be remiss not to note the outstanding services provided to the state body by Ronald Jones who was Secretary from 1936 to 1951 a period of some 16 years interrupted only by the outbreak of World War 2. And, turning to financial matters, the service provided to the state body by Eric Leder as Treasurer from 1962 until his sudden death in 1986 a period of some 24 years is unlikely to be ever matched again. The state body maintains honour rolls for the positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and Chief Executive Officer. Further, the state body maintains honour rolls for Victorian Open Singles Champion, Victorian Closed Singles Champion and Victorian Country Teams & Singles Champion. These rolls shall be published on the TTV website sometime in 2016. The state body has also established a Hall of Fame with three divisions Seniors, Juniors and Veterans. There are currently 30 players inducted into the Senior Division, 39 players inducted into the Junior Division and 32 players inducted into the Veterans Division. The rolls of all athletes inducted are available for perusal on the TTV website. TTV also presents the following annual awards French Award for Senior Player of the Year; Coburg Award for Senior Player of the Year; Sokolowksi Award for Veteran Player of the Year Rosario Award for Para Player of the Year; President s Award for Distinguished Service; Guggenheim Award for Volunteer of the Year and the Javor Award for Coach of the Year. The rolls of annual winners shall also be published on the TTV website sometime in 2016. Page 9

It was in many ways a truly remarkable year for TTV in 2015. The AGM in April was attended by a large number of affiliates, either in person (by delegate) or by proxy. This came as no surprise as one of the candidates for the position of Chair, myself, campaigned on a platform of reform. Reform was, and is, still required however, for many, that proved simply too difficult to accept or indeed embrace. The result was extraordinarily close and I take this opportunity to warmly thank Kelvin Putt (Ballarat TTA), my opponent, who conducted himself with honour and dignity during the campaign. However, in winning the election, I did not take control of TTV as one of the nine elected Directors. That did not come until the resignation of the former Chief Executive Officer in June. Up and until that time, an extraordinary power struggle ensued I was of the view that rule 23(b)(i) of the TTV Constitution mandated that the Board control and manage the business of the Association. As against that, was the previous Board s apparent ceding of such responsibility to the former Chief Executive Officer to perform. It is vitally important that the constitutional document which governs TTV be respected and adhered to that just did not seem to happen when I took office. Unfortunately, the election did not bring immediate change. The early meetings in 2015 (after election) were difficult voting on nearly all issues was by a bare majority. There were many outstanding disputes in my opinion, TTV resembled a small legal office with private lawyers on retainer and seemingly trivial disputes incapable of sensible resolution. Furthermore, the finances quickly became a source of great concern expenses appeared to be not under control with payments often deferred. This was an area that had attracted a great deal of comment from the previous auditor whose services were terminated by the previous Board on the grounds of good governance. In short, his 2014 audit report is most edifying. The past 12-24 months did not see TTV function as it should. The body was deeply riven with quasi-political disputes. There were many issues that required immediate action and the misguided efforts by some at cleansing the sport has in my opinion been a spectacular failure. Thus, it is now a time for the Board to discharge its constitutional duty and manage the sport in the best interests of all members. The appointment of Dennis Makaling as the new Chief Executive Officer heralded a new start he is experienced in administration and was a former table tennis champion. Rosie Murphy, the Operations & Administration Manager, very ably assists in the running of the TTV Office. The process of reform has now been accelerated the appointment of new Board Directors, the promulgation of new by-laws reforming many areas of the sport, the establishment of the State Selection Panel, the revamping of TTV committees, the review of affiliation and membership conditions, the creation of new divisions in the Hall of Fame, and so on. In the playing arena, much effort was directed towards bettering results in particular, the results recorded by the junior players and the senior players at the respective National Championships in 2015 was a spectacular improvement on the results recorded in 2014. It has proved to be a most difficult year in terms of reform and I have not particularly enjoyed all of my tenure to date I hope the future brings some richer rewards. However, it must be said that the results of so many Victorian players in 2015 brought great satisfaction. Brett Sonnet TTV Chairperson Page 10

I started my role as Chief Executive Officer with TTV in August 2015 and I experienced a smooth transitional change from customer sales/service management and team mentoring roles which was my strong career background. Going back into the sport which has given me many memories and glories, I consider myself grateful to TTV and lucky to be given the opportunity to manage our sport in the best way possible. I cannot guarantee the amount of injected funds that I can bring into our association, but I can guarantee that I will do my absolute best in working to achieve this. To summarise the six months that has happened in my time so far has been promising. First, we employed a State Development Officer (James Pountney) who is funded by TTA to help encourage our state s primary schools into choosing table tennis as their preferred sport through the Sporting Schools National Program. Secondly, our membership numbers have grown from 3800 to 4200 in six months with 3 additional affiliates coming on board. I believe that 5000 members is an achievable number in the next 12-24 months. Thirdly, we have acquired a new website which is more user-friendly, can facilitate online membership registrations and also provide a better service overall. Fourthly, a new strategic plan for 2016-2018 has been created for TTV which focusses on many important areas that would develop our sport such as more accreditation of coaches in clubs, improved board governance, and an increase in participation from all demographics and minority groups. Table Tennis Victoria s vision is For every Victorian to be participating in table tennis. Our veteran members and players are continually growing, with more Keenager groups being created in many clubs. However, the sport needs more juniors and seniors (especially females) and the biggest challenge for all of us is sustainability. If we all work together to help increase the participation numbers, TTV can help with promoting the programs through our website and Facebook page. TTV aims to increase the number of coaches within the clubs to provide a more qualitative and quantitative process a recent example is the accreditation of 20 TOPS and 17 Level 1 coaches from November. TTV has a busy year ahead judging by the 2016 tournament calendar. The Rio Olympics is just around the corner and the State/National Championships also provide an entertaining platform for our sport. However, the best players in our state begin playing from the grass-roots within our clubs and we all play a big part in the production and development of these players. I hope we can all work together collectively to achieve our state s vision. Dennis Makaling TTV Chief Executive Officer Page 11
