FAST Kids Basketball Beginning activity Nursery Rhymes ( Prep, 1 and 2) Dribble to an old fashioned nursery rhyme. Hickory, Dickory Dock, Baa Baa Black Sheep and Incy Wincy Spider are a few examples. Copy Cat (Year 3 up) Children pair up. Partners face each other across the court. Select one group to be first. On teacher s call they run across the court and perform an activity with their partner. Activities could include High 5 s, jumps in a circle, leapfrog, through legs, hip bumps Once they have completed the activity they run back to their own spot and their partner copies the same action. Add basketballs and introduce dribbling and passing skills. Skills Stop n Go ( Prep, 1 and 2) Numbered paper plates and stop signs are spread out over the court. Each child has their own ball. On turning over a number the children dribble to a new number. On a stop sign they perform an action on the spot. Card shark (Year 3 up) Children pair up. One person has the basketball. Teacher stands in the middle with playing cards. To start the game the player without the ball collects a card from the teacher and runs back to their partner. If a black card is chosen they bounce the ball. If a red card is chosen they chest pass the ball.

All picture cards are 11. Games Beanbag pickup Spread out hoops over the court. Place a beanbag in each hoop. On the teachers call children pick up a beanbag and drop it into another hoop while dribbling the ball. Number Layup (Year 4 up) Create 3 teams at the ends of each court. Place a ball on a marker in front of each team. Number the players. On the teachers call children attempt to shoot a basket. They continue to layup until they have scored. The first person to score and replace their ball on the marker is awarded 3 points the second 2 and so on. Soccer/Futsal Beginning activities At the zoo (Prep,1 and 2) All children dribble a ball in the space. On the teachers call they perform an animal action: Cheetah move very quickly Sloth move slowly Kangaroo jump with ball between feet Crab move sideways Penguin waddle with ball Builders Demolishers (Year 3 up) Scatter markers throughout the playing space. Divide the group into 2. Without a ball demolishers knock down the buildings while the builders build them back up. Change roles. Add balls.

Skills Dot spots (Prep, 1 and 2) Spread the spots out over the playing space. Children trap ball on top of dots. Time for 30 seconds, 60 seconds compare results. Knock it off (year 3 up) Place a dome marker on top of a large cone. Position the kickers 2 or 3 m away. The aim is to knock off the dome marker. Set a target of first to 3, first to 5. Games Kick and run (Years 2, 3 and 4) Form 2 teams. The kicking team kicks out into space and runs to collect a token from a hoop placed 5 metres away. The fielders trap the ball and pass it to 3 people in the team. The last person shoots a goal. When successful the runner stops. Soccer rounders (Year 4 up) Form 2 teams. Kicker sends the ball out into space and proceeds to dribble the second ball around the bases. The fielders try to reach the base to score an out. Small ball activities Shower ball (Prep 1,2) Divide the group into 2. Create a dividing line between the 2 groups. Everyone should have a ball. On the leaders call, everyone starts throwing. When stop is called all throwing ceases and teams count the number of balls in their space. Change sides and play it again.

Snowball tag (Year 2 up) Start with one tagger who has a ball Once tagged players take a ball from the centre area and also become taggers. The game starts off slow but picks up pace as more taggers are involved. Skills Hot potato ( Prep 1 and 2) Form groups on dot spots. Children pass the ball around the circle. On the whistle the child with the ball runs around the group and back to their own spot. Score a point if first back. Guard it (Year 3 up) Each player requires a skittle and ball. Children spread out in the playing space placing their skittle in front of them. The aim of the game is to knock over skittles not belonging to you. If your skittle is knocked over perform a penalty of three star jumps and replace your skittle. Game Your challenge Divide the group into two teams. One throwing, one fielding. Set up a line of markers in line with the throwing team. The first thrower sends the ball out into the playing space (younger children can use a throwing stick). It is the throwers choice to determine how far they run. Their aim is to get back to the starting position before the fielders return the ball. No score if the ball beats them back.
