A Guide to Basic Seating The risk of developing pressure ulcers is significantly increased when patients or clients spend extended periods in the seated position. A further complication associated with sitting for extended periods are the practical aspects of repositioning and the impairment of venous return. Invacare provide an educational package entitled Clinical Concepts of Seating, aimed at increasing awareness of the risks associated with inappropriate chair nursing. Sitting can create an unstable posture, and the performance of any pressure reducing cushion cannot be properly evaluated without taking account the overall seating position and the existence of factors which may contribute to the development of pressure ulcers. Flo-tech Solution Xtra TM Pelvic Obliquity Pad Pad The pelvic obliquity pad can be inserted into either side of the ischial well under the gel pad. For correctable pelvic obliquity, place under the lowest ischial tuberosity (side of the pelvis) and ensure the lateral side of the pelvis and the trunk are stable. For fixed pelvic obliquity, place under the highest side to accommodate the deformity and also support the trunk if required it may be more suitable to use the fluid pack. Hip Pelvic Aligner Obliquity Pad The Hip Aligner can be placed on either side on the rear edge of the cushion, secured by the velcro, and used either unilaterally or bilaterally. Encourages mid-lining through stabilising the pelvis and guiding the thighs into a central position. Facilitates hip alignment for those with abduction, especially when used in conjunction with a pommel. Thigh Pelvic Aligner Obliquity Pad The Thigh Aligner can be placed on either side of the femoral shelf at the front of the cushion, secured by velcro and used either unilaterally or bilaterally. Reduces external rotation and abduction of the thighs through aligning the femurs and may also assist with wind-sweeping. Pommel Pelvic Obliquity Standard or Pad Deep The pommel can be placed on the front of the cushion to increase the existing pommel height. Femoral alignment for those with internal thigh rotation and hip adduction. Maintains hip joints in an abducted position to facilitate normal development. May assist with spasticity (Hyper tonicity) management. Component Parts Fluid Pelvic Pack Obliquity Pad A Fluid Pack can be inserted into the ischial well where required, and can be doubled for specific placing. Front placement prevents forward sliding. Rear placement assists with sacral pressure. Side placement for mild pelvic obliquity. Side Pelvic Wedges Obliquity Pad Side wedges can be placed on any corner of the cushion base. There are 2 different wedges to accommodate all 4 corners. Assists with lateral hip rotation and thigh alignment. For milder postural positioning. Can be used under one thigh for mild hip flexion discrepancies. Lateral Pelvic Wedges Obliquity Pad Lateral Wedges can be placed underneath the base of the cushion and must be trimmed to the size of the cushion. Facilitates lateral pelvic and hip stability. Encourages internal rotation of the hip. Can be used either unilaterally for above knee amputees or mild pelvic obliquity, and bilaterally for more contoured positioning. Front Pelvic Wedge Obliquity Pad Front Wedge is to placed on the underneath of the cushion base and will need to be trimmed to size. Assists with pelvic stability. Accommodates posterior tilt. Reduces anterior tilt. Consider using anterior supports to facilitate pelvic stability e.g. pelvic belts. Cover Design The cover has been developed in an ingress resistant material. An innovative design has been incorporated into the cover to allow for it s expansion to increase immersion into the cushion, once components have been added. There are 2 zips included in the cover which have colour coded sliders: Blue to open the cover. Green to expand. The cover has a three-sided zip and can be fully opened to adjust the components as necessary.

Flo-tech Visco Range The Flo-tech Visco range of cushions offers a comfortable and effective solution to those at High Risk / Elevated Risk or increased vulnerability to pressure ulcer development. The Invacare Flo-tech Visco cushion range is manufactured using a moulding process which is at the leading edge of technology. This unique moulding of the cushion will improve posture, thus increasing comfort and the level of pressure reduction. Immobile users are considered most vulnerable to pressure ulcer development whilst seated. Accordingly, advice should be sought on reducing risk from NICE guidelines, RCN recommendations or reference to Invacare s Clinical Concepts of Seating.
