Winners of novice division have the option to show in non-novice division. Winners from class 101, 103, 105 will represent the Beef Department in the Round Robin Showmanship Contest Friday, April 13, 2018 at 10 am. ~ NOSE PRINT ~ It is extremely important to thoroughly dry the nose prior to applying the ink and to quickly lift the print before perspiration appears. Moisture will cause the ink to run and to fill up the grooves of the nose. This will result in a smeared print, thus a rejected entry. It is suggested that the tongue be held down with a towel or cloth to keep the animal from licking its nose. Examples of acceptable and unacceptable nose prints are shown as follows. Exhibitors should work with their leaders and advisors to get a readable nose print. Equipment and materials needed: Terry cloth towels. Black, fast drying ink stamp pad (regular office supply, 3" x 4 1/2" felt pad OK). Head gate or squeeze chute. 3" x 5" non-lined, non-glossy standard index cards (slick finished cards will produce a smeared print). 1/4" x 4" x 6" wood block or some solid backing support for the card. Place the animal in a head gate or squeeze chute. Procedure 1. Stand to the side of the animal s head. Reach over and around animal s neck in order to restrain the head. 2. Use a towel to thoroughly dry the non-hair area of the muzzle. 3. Immediately cover the non-haired areas with black ink. A good procedure is to start the edge of the pad at the lower edge of the upper lip, then roll the pad upward toward the face. 4. Using the block of wood, or the closed ink pad as a support, immediately press the index card against the nose and lift the print. Use the same procedure described for applying ink. 5. If the print is smeared because of movement or moisture from the nose, repeat the sequence. PHOTO TECHNIQUE: Do not take the quality of your photo lightly. If your photo does not identify both the exhibitor and the animal, it may result in disqualification of your entry. The picture is as important as your entry card and nose print card. Your picture must be a clear image of both the animal and the exhibitor, not too dark or light. The exhibitor and the animal need to be seen in detail. Pictures should be taken outside in sunlight to assure a clear, identifiable print. A Polaroid camera is suggested since pictures can be developed and retaken if not acceptable. The picture must be of exhibitor and market beef. The animal must be shown at a 3/4 front view. The picture, not to exceed 4"x6", and nose print card for each animal, must be attached to entries.
