CL Scale Ted Kraver reporting. CL Scale Opening Day Today s CL Scale photos are from prior Nats (2007 to 2011) except ½A which were from Tucson Contests. Today s Events: CL Scale RC Scale TODAY, CONTROL LINE Scale kicks off Control Line week at the Nats. CL Scale is followed Monday by Stunt, Racing, Speed, and Combat, and Tuesday with Navy Carrier. Combat and Stunt wrap up the week on Saturday, July 21. CL Scale co-event directors this year are Allen Goff of Muncie Indiana, and John Brodak of Carmichaels, Pennsylvania. The AMA events to be contested are Fun Scale including a Novice class, Sport Scale, Profile Scale, Team Scale, and the FAI class F4B Scale for highly detailed models. Alan and John are adding a new unofficial event this year, ½A Scale. The ½A scale models can be profile with up to.61 cc engines protruding with no penalty in static judging. An extra engine gives additional points but it must keep running during the flight consisting of takeoff, 10 laps, and landing. Judging criteria follows other Scale events: scale outline, markings, finish, and color. Simple documentation of three-view, color photos of aircraft modeled, or information from a plastic model kit will suffice. For these smaller models, judging is from five feet. This event is intended to encourage building and flying with both novice and expert scale builders. The ½A Scale event has been growing nationally, with hotly contested multiengine events in Tucson, Arizona, and St. Louis, Missouri. CL Scale aircraft range from 30-inch wingspan to 60 inches. The larger models seem more stable for better flight scores and it are easier to build with enclosed engines and lots of details. Documentation for static judging on Friday can be as little as one page for Fun Scale, with three-views, a picture of the airplane, and proof of color. Fun Scale has no builder-of-the-model rule so ARFs can be used. For Profile, Sport, and FAI-F4B Scale, the document can be up to eight pages. Sport Team Scale has both the builder and the flier at the circle. Profile and Sport Scale can be built from a kit or published plans, but FAI-F4B must be an original design by the entrant. There are two changes to this year s CL Scale Nationals. After a dozen-plus years of attendance by master builder/flier Frank Beatty, he can t make it this year. We had expected to see his three new models: D.H. 89 Dragon Rapide black with yellow trim; Borg Parakeet AgCat yellow with black trim; and Arrow Active Mk II silver and Frank s signature detail checkerboard, this time red and white. Second is a meeting of CL Scale folks Friday night at the Signature Inn meeting room. John Brodak and Frank Beatty have been working on handbooks for both building and flying CL. John will be looking for input from Nats modelers to ensure that the handbooks cover all the bases. As I write in Phoenix, three model/equipment boxes are on a Greyhound bus headed for Indianapolis. Being 113 today, I can t wait for cool Midwestern weather! NN John Brodak making emergency repair on his Shoestring, successfully. Allen Goff landing his Waco.

RC Scale Stan Alexander reporting. RC Scale National Championships 2012 Opening Bell Today s RC Scale photographs are from Ted Kraver 2011. Albert Kretz and his his sliding canopy SBD Dauntless dive bomber. WHEN YOU ARRIVE in Muncie, get your motel, a little supper, you finally start to relax from the day of driving, and you realize it s time to have fun! We are here in Muncie bringing money to the economy, adding people from across the country to this beautiful city, but we re here to go out to the site on Memorial Drive, which is dear and near to our hearts the International Aeromodeling Center at AMA Headquarters includes the Headquarters building, the museum, and especially the flying site. As I mentioned, it s time to have fun, that s what we are here for. Fun Scale, Sport Scale Expert, Sportsman, and many other RC Scale classes are all being flown this year, along with several other unofficial classes. There is something for everyone. Whether Expert or Novice, everyone is invited. Not an invitational contest, as long as you have your AMA license and a Scale model, you can compete and have a great time while you are here. Jim Martin is the Event Director for RC Scale this year and Jim has done a great job putting together a good group of judges and officials to make everything run smoothly this year. Finding good, qualified judges can be a problem for an event that is as labor intensive as the Scale Nats. National Association of Scale Aeromodelers (NASA) president Mike Barbee and crew have put together a host of activities for modelers and their families during and after the day s flying, both Friday night as well as Saturday night. We ve just learned that on Friday the field will be open for practice flying as well as open flying all day. It s time to set up those canopies and get your space lined up for the weekend. Hopefully the weather will stay sunny and warm for the rest of the week. No matter what type of Scale model you have, Site 3 or Show Center has a runway that will accommodate anything from a World War I Fokker Dr.I triplane to an F-18 Super Hornet. So bring your bombers, fighters, and civil transports there is room for every type of Scale model here. NASA, host of the Scale Nats, will have special awards this weekend for RC and CL Scale. NASA has operated the Scale Nationals now for many, many years and continues to provide a quality event for Scale modelers here in the heart of the country. Without the NASA volunteers, judges, officials, it just wouldn t be possible to hold this event each year. So for a great time, come on out and see the static judging Friday and the flight competition on Saturday and Sunday. The evening events also will include Greg Hahn with his guitar and others who will sing along. I even heard this morning that Dale Arvin will join in the singing! That should be great! NN Terry Hahn s jet powered-waco.

RC Scale Stan Alexander reporting. George Maiorana s massive Tu-4 and Tu-95 have been hits at past Nats. Pilot on the left is Dave Pinegar. J-3 Draken flown by Frank Alvarez headed to the flightline. Mike Barbee with his Piper Cub. For Sport Scale, Raymond Stevens campaigns a Bu-133 decked out in colorful Swiss colors and markings of yellow and red, with white crosses. Art Shelton took four years to design and build his Belgium Nieuport 11. Over the past two months he and Ronda have made two dozen flights for testing and at a couple of contests. Jack Buckley looking for that one tiny screw needed to assemble his Tiger Moth for FAI Scale.

RC Scale Aerobatics Curtis Cozier reporting. Jenni Orebaugh photography. RC Scale Aerobatics Wrap-up Report THE FINALS. That about sums up Thursday at the Scale Aerobatic Nats. The Finals. Just the thought induces a bit of extra stress and excitement. And the Finals on Thursday did not disappoint. Another beautiful summer morning dawned with a bit of wind... and the wind picked up to add to the challenges of the day. Each of the pilots flew an Unknown first thing in the morning, then flew two Known sequences, and then flew a second Unknown sequence. The key to these Unknowns is good memorization, good visualization with their stick airplanes, and a great caller. The caller not only helps the pilot with directions and reminders of the next maneuvers, but also helps spot for the other airplanes in the air. They are an invaluable help to the pilot and greatly appreciated. It is not uncommon for competitors to call for each other. The flightlines moved along great and the sequences finished ahead of schedule. Next up was the Freestyle. After several competitors flew exciting flights choreographed to music, the National Freestyle champion was crowned. Congrats to Chris Hass on his championship! After the scorekeepers double checked and then triple checked the scores, contest director Gil Major called the pilots together for the awards ceremony. With the history behind the National Championships no one takes the results lightly and excitement was in the air. So without further ado, here are our Scale Aerobatic National Champions. Unlimited Class Kurt Koelling Advanced Class Joey Hayes Intermediate Class Geoffrey Donati Sportsman class Alex Sessions Congratulations to our new champions and congratulations to all of the competitors. Four days of continuous competition is exhausting, exciting, and fun! Can t wait for next year to do it again! For complete results, check out the AMA website at www.modelaircraft.org or the International Miniature Aerobatic Club (IMAC) website at www. mini-iac.com. See you in 2013 and best of luck to the rest of the summers Nats competitors. NN
