CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Grand Strand/Myrtle Beach Chapter - American Singles Golf Association July 2011 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Go Team Myrtle Beach! We are the "Beach Battle Champs" - 4th year in a row. Next, we defend the "North/South Challenge" title. The 13th Annual golf event in Southern Pines, North Carolina, July 22nd to 24th, at the Talimore Golf Resort is one of the best tournaments on our schedule. The 2 night package costs $205. If you love golf and like to party, don't miss this one. We are required to have at least 10 members to be eligible. So sign up ASAP. As always, our golf committee has numerous outings planned, including the renowned "Island Hop", October 1st and 2nd, run by Nancy Feller. It will fill up quickly as it is limited to 60 people. Go to the Golf Column for the "scoop". FYI. Our golf chairs do a fabulous job setting up our events and negotiating prices. When we book tee times in advance, these times are reserved. Newspaper and email offers are coming in at lower rates. Remember, these offers seek to fill vacant spots. There is no way we can reserve 6 or more tee times, at the time we request, a day or even a week in advance. Yes, we can bring in the ad, and if they honor it...fine. If not, we should not create a "fuss". Our team is working on getting you the BEST prices. But remember, the key word here is WORK! It's easy to complain and not realize the time and effort required in organizing these outings. My hat is off to the Golf Committee and Board Members who provide us with incredible golf and social events. Have you thanked them lately? Occasionally we have "NO SHOWS". This is difficult since we have a cut off which limits the number of members who can play. Because we guarantee our numbers 2 days in advance, we create "ill will" with the course. The Board has voted to impose a $10 penalty on any member who fails to notify the golf chair in charge after a 2nd "no show". If it's too hot to join us for the monthly 9 holes of golf, don't miss out on the meeting. Dinner and friends... you can't beat this combination. Don't forget to bring your "spirit" with you. Everyone needs a smile and a kind word. Hope to see you at the Fourth of July Party at the home of The Party Master himself, the one and only Dick Harper. May you always have a smile on your lips and a song in your heart. ~Mary Ann Sanborn, President GOLF COMMITTEE REPORT June was a great month for golf with five local events and one national event at Pinehurst. Fifteen golfers from Myrtle Beach made the short drive to Pinehurst. Unfortunately we were totally washed out by a severe rain on Friday. Saturday, however, was nice. and in the play your own ball division DIANE WOLFE S team took first place. In the shambles competition. RAY NIX S team took first and BIRGIT CARPEN- TER S team took second. I had closest to the pin on the 218 yard par three. On Sunday at Tobacco Road which is rated one of the toughest public courses in the country (DIANE WOLFE described it as torture) CHARLIE GARREN still shot an 80 after missing two short putts! CHAR- LIE and RICH BORACOVE both won closest to the pin awards. Eight of us had a great time sharing a villa and when we got rained out JOAN KALAC deftly wiped out the men in the poker game. On a more serious note, PHIL HORAK now holds the course record at Heritage 7th hole*. He told me it took him 17 strokes to get out of a fairway bunker. He hoped to save a 21 with a one-putt but Upcoming Events Include (see SinglesGolf.com/events) Jacksonville's World Golf Village Weekend - August 26-28, 2011. Details at www.singlesgolf.com/worldgolfweekend Labor Day Weekend Event 2011 - September 1-4, 2011. Kingsport, TN. Our lovely president MARY ANN SANBORN had everyone over to her house after golf for pizza and refreshments. Thank you Mary Ann. And way to go Phil. (Note from Phil) * Yesterday down at Litchfield, someone hinted that there may be a note in the next Newsletter referencing my 17 strokes in a fairway bunker at The Heritage links earlier this month. You might also want to report that at Litchfield Golf Club yesterday that I reverted back to my usual sand trap game, escaping seven traps in only eight strokes, including getting up and down for two pars. Phil (yes, way to go, Phil!) There was a light turnout for 9&dine (about four groups). We moved along pretty quickly and managed to play five extra holes before having to stop for the regular meeting which was well attended. The weather was very warm but with a nice breeze for the Fathers Day outing at Heathland. Our group got rain checks for nine holes as thunder and lightning started at the turn. Thanks to NANCY FELLER for organizing the event. At this writing, events at Litchfield and Parkland are yet to be played and a report will be in July s newsletter. If you have not already done so, it's time to RENEW YOUR LEGEND CARD. It is now expired. The charge for renewal is $10.00 and has many benefits included, such as free lunch. Ask at the pro shop desk to renew your card. Our July schedule is packed with premium courses! RESORT COURSE, GRAND DUNES...KINGS NORTH, MYRTLE BEACH NATIONAL... HEATH- LAND, LEGENDS. Consult our upgraded web site for dates, prices, etc. We've tried to schedule these events at cooler times of the day so take advantage of the opportunity to play these great courses at off season rates. Bill Doughty Your golf committee wishes you a cool summer and a hot date, ~Nancy, Lynn, Charlie and Bill GOLF - SPECIAL EVENTS I think we need a bigger trophy cabinet!!!! Myrtle Beach came out on top again at the Beach Battle hosted by Wilmington on June 11th. Twenty five of us played at The Thistle and the weather could not have been more perfect. The course was in excellent shape and our friends from Wilmington were such gracious hosts. After golf we were treated to a wonderful buffet dinner of hamburgers and hot dogs with all the trimmings. And check out the trophy -- it is definitely one of a kind. Congratulations to all who participated. And our other special event was Fathers Day on June 19th. Seventeen hardy souls came out to play Heathland on a rather hot and steamy day. Most of the players opted for Captain's Choice while the rest played own ball. Only a few dropped out after 9 holes. But our biggest news is our Island Hop outing has been finalized. The registration form is included in your newsletter and it is also posted on our website (singlesgolf.com). Be sure to mark your calendars and register early. We are limited to 60 spots. We have invited all the Chapters in North Carolina, South Carolina and George. That's 13 in all. This will be our 4th trip back to Oak Island and Bald Head Island and we have always been sold out. So block off October 1 & 2 on your calendar because you won't want to miss this event. ~Nancy Feller nfeller@frontier.com 843-281-2982 Membership Debbie Oberlin Txswimmer1950@yahoo.com (843) 503-5336 Communications Toni Lacroix (Newsletter) ajlacroix@atmc.net (910) 575-2527 Do you want to update your personal information on our chapter s roster? SOCIAL NEWS Reminder to save the date of December 3rd for the Christmas Party. This year promises to be one of the best we've ever had. Looking into a beach party in September - probably at Myrtle Beach State Park - more info to follow.
