Maples Pavilion COVERAGE: Live Chat on GoHuskies.com Video from Stanford for subscription fee WASHINGTON FACES TOP-10 TESTS IN BAY AREA A trip to the Bay Area this week gives the second-ranked Husky volleyball team its first chance this season to challenge the 2010 conference co-champions, and jockey for the lead position as the 2011 Pac-12 race nears the midway point. Friday, two of the top-ranked teams in the conference will go head to head, as Washington (15-1, 7-1 Pac-12) stops in Berkeley to take on fourth-ranked California (17-2, 7-2 Pac-12). Match time is 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion and the match will be televised on a tape delay basis by ROOT Sports. The next evening, the Huskies will face the seventh-ranked Stanford Cardinal (12-3, 6-3 Pac-12) at Maples Pavilion in another 7 p.m. match-up. Stanford and California shared the conference title last season, and the Huskies have bitter memories of the Golden Bears, losing to Cal in the NCAA Quarterfinals last year. Neither the Cardinal or Bears have lost on their home courts yet this season. Washington, meanwhile, has won seven matches in a row and has climbed to No. 2 nationally, the highest it has been since November of the 2006 season. The Huskies are currently alone in second in the Pac-12, a half-game behind USC, which is 8-1. COVERAGE The match against Cal is the Pac-12 Match of the Week, and will be shown on a tape delayed basis nationally on ROOT Sports. Broadcast times for the Seattle area will be announced soon and updated in this space. The Stanford athletics site will have a live stream of Saturday s match for a subscription fee. Fans in the Seattle area can watch UWTV on channel 27 carried by Comcast. The new partnership will be the first chance fans will have to watch regular season matches on live television. UWTV broadcasts began with the Pac-12 opener against USC, and include home matches against UCLA, Oregon, Colorado, Utah, Arizona State, California, and Washington State. The home match against Stanford will be aired by ROOT Sports on a tape delayed basis, as will Washington s road match at California. In addition, every Husky home match, even those not televised, will be available to stream for free on GoHuskies.com. LAST TIME OUT The Huskies wrapped up a four-match homestand with two 3-0 victories against new Pac- 12 rivals Colorado and Utah for their sixth and seventh consecutive wins. Against the Buffs on Friday, Kylin Muñoz led the way with 15 kills en route to a 25-14, 25-21, 25-20 victory. The 15 kills was a career-best in conference play for Muñoz, who hit.394. The Dawgs controlled the hitting percentages,.264 to.069, aided by a 13-4 lead in total blocks. Senior Bianca Rowland had eight blocks and freshman Krista Vansant led the team with nine digs. Sophomore setter Jenni Nogueras got her first Pac-12 action in the third set, setting UW to a.355 attack percentage. Saturday night against the Utes, UW again held its opposition under.100 hitting, as Utah managed just.081 though the Huskies had their thirdlowest percentage themselves at.183. The Huskies came away with a 25-17, 28-26, 25-14 win. The second set featured 20 ties and eight lead changes with UW overcoming a 23-21 deficit. Vansant had 14 kills, seven in the third set alone, when UW pulled away. Lauren Barfield had five kills without an error and led with five blocks. Summer Ross had 15 digs and Kelly Holford added 13, both career highs, and the Huskies had a 6-0 edge in service aces. QUICK STARTS STANDARD PRACTICE The Huskies went 14-1 through their first fifteen matches this season, and currently sit 15-1 overall. Under Head Coach Jim McLaughlin, such a start is nothing new. In fact, on four occasions McLaughlin had the Huskies unbeaten through 15 matches (2004, 2005, 2007, 2009) and this is the second time they ve gone 14-1, having done the same last season. SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS California was the biggest thorn in UW s side last season, as the Bears took both regular season matches and won the NCAA Elite Eight match en route to a loss in the NCAA Finals. Cal replaced National Player of the Year Carli Lloyd with Elly Barrett at setter and she is 11th nationally with 11.61 assists per set. Cal is 17-2 and 7-2 in the Pac-12, with its only losses at USC and UCLA. Last week, the Bears swept 15th-ranked Oregon in Eugene and after a first set loss, came back to cruise past the Beavers in Corvallis. 2010 First Team All-American Tarah Murrey was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week last week and Kat Brown was named Defensive POTW. Cal had a whopping 18 blocks in just three sets against the Ducks. The Bears lead the Pac-12 in attack percentage at.291, thanks in large part to their three middle blockers, Brown, Shannon Hawari, and Correy Johnson, all of who are in the Top-10 in the Pac-12. Junior libero Robin Rostratter is also second in the conference with 5.20 digs per set. Washington has won five of the past seven meetings in Berkeley, the last win coming in 2009. UW has a 29-27 all-time series lead. SCOUTING THE CARDINAL Stanford is 12-3 on the season and 6-3 in Pac-12 play. They lost their opener at Cal, and then fell on the road at USC and UCLA, but have since defeated the Arizonas at home and the Oregons on the road for four straight wins. The Cardinal also had marquee home wins over Penn State and Florida in the preseason, and Stanford is 8-0 at home. Sophomore Rachel Williams has stepped up as the Cardinal s No. 1 hitting option this year, and she ranks third in the Pac-12 with 4.55 kills per set. Sophomore middle blocker Carly Wopat has also enjoyed a big year, averaging 3.14 kills per set while hitting.365 and leading the Pac-12 with 1.62 blocks per set. As a team, Stanford is just seventh in the conference with a.234 attack percentage, but it is defending very well. Stanford is the only team in the NCAA with a higher blocking average than UW, as it puts down 3.34 blocks per set. The Cardinal also are the top digging team in the conference with 17.57. Junior setter Karissa Cook is 23rd nationally with 11.20 assists per set. The Cardinal won both meetings against the Huskies last year, though both were tightly contested. Last year at Stanford, the Cardinal escaped a fifth set by pulling out a marathon 32-30 fourth set win. UW s last win in Palo Alto was in 2007. The Cardinal hold a 47-10 all-time series lead. HUSKIES IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS For the first time since the 2006 season, the Huskies are up to No. 2 in the nation in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, passing UCLA after the Bruins dropped a match

Weekly Release Page 3 October 11, 2011 at Arizona last week. Washington was ranked second for two weeks in November of 2006, reaching the Final Fou and finishing fourth overall. The only time the Huskies have been higher was in 2004 and 2005, when they were the topranked team in the country at least once each year. Illinois remains No. 1 in the rankings for the third week in a row. The Pac-12 continues to dominate the top-10, as USC follows Washington at No. 3, then Cal at four, and Stanford at seven. Oregon is also 16th this week, making six conference teams in the top-20. The Dawgs began the season ranked seventh nationally in both the AVCA and Volleyball Magazine polls. That was down one spot from where UW finished the 2010 season. RECORDS WATCH The Dawgs are a young squad but there are a few numbers to keep an eye on early in the season. The first milestone came from Coach McLaughlin, as he reached the 250 wins mark at Washington with the victory at Gonzaga on Sept. 3. McLaughlin is already the winningest coach in program history, raising the bar with each subsequent win. Senior Bianca Rowland is making her way up the charts in career blocks, as she just became the sixth Husky ever with 400 career total blocks, now owning 404. Her 382 block assists also just passed Lisa Underhill for fifth in school history. Rowland also recently passed the 1,000 career points plateau, the eighth Husky to do so since points began being tracked in 2000. Fellow senior Lauren Barfield may not have seen as many sets as Rowland, but her career average continues to climb. At 1.12 career blocks per set, Barfield currently ranks eighth in school history. NUMBER CRUNCHING A look at the current stats finds the Huskies near the top of the NCAA in a number of categories. UW currently ranks second in the nation in blocks per set. The Dawgs have pushed their blocks average to 3.30, behind only Stanford in the NCAA. Bianca Rowland (1.52) and Lauren Barfield (1.44) are now second and third in the Pac-12, and sixth and 12th nationally, in blocks per set. Both are well ahead of their previous season-best paces, as Rowland s best was 1.13 blocks last year and Barfield averaged 1.09 a year ago. The Huskies also lead the Pac-12 and rank fifth nationally with 1.90 aces per set. Washington has done the service work collectively, as six Huskies already have double digit ace totals. Freshmen Summer Ross and Krista Vansant lead the way with 16 and 15 aces, respectively. The Huskies are second in the Pac-12 and seventh nationally in attack percentage, hitting.281, and their.111 opponent hitting percentage leads the Pac-12. Washington in 12-0 when hitting above.250 and also has a 13-0 mark when holding its opponent under.200. UP NEXT Washington remains on the road, starting off the second round of Pac-12 matches with a trip to Oregon. Oregon State is up first on Friday, October 21, then 16th-ranked Oregon hosts the Huskies on October 22. Both matches start at 7 p.m. It will be a quick turnaround from the first meetings, which were less than two weeks back, with UW winning both in Seattle. UW WINS IN AND OUT OF CONFERENCE With a 8-0 start to the season, the Huskies ran their record against non-conference foes to 109-6 since the beginning of the 2003 season. That adds up to a.948 winning percentage out of the Pac-12. Five of the six losses have been fiveset nailbiters as well. Though its not as if UW has been shabby in league play either. Starting in 2004 when the Huskies won their first Pac-10 title, they have gone a combined 108-26 (.805) in conference matches and finished first or second six out of seven years. PLEASED TO MEET YOU There are five new faces this fall for Husky fans to get acquainted with, as UW reloads after losing a trio of All-Americans to graduation last year. The biggest additions are to the outside hitter corps, as freshmen Krista Vansant, Summer Ross, and Kaleigh Nelson could account for a large chunk of the Husky offense this year. Freshman Kim Condie adds depth to the defensive specialists, and senior setter Evan Sanders joined UW from Colorado State for her final season. Vansant drew the most headlines, as she graced the cover of Volleyball Magazine as the No. 1 recruit in the country, and was named Gatorade National Player of the Year, a first for a UW recruit. Ross earned equal acclaim on the beach, winning World Youth and World Junior titles last season to be named USA Beach Volleyball Player of the Year, the first time a junior won the award. Nelson is a grayshirt freshman standout from Oregon with big athleticism. Condie helped her team to the California D-II state title her senior year. Sanders brings big experience to the young Dawgs, as she has been an All-Mountain West Conference First Team setter the past two years, leading the Rams to the NCAA tourney and Top-25 rankings. RETURNER HONORS Senior Bianca Rowland is the most decorated returning Dawg. The dynamic middle blocker has been named All-Pacific Region the past two years en route to being named an AVCA All- America honorable mention in 2009 and 2010. She was also named All-Pac-10 honorable mention the past two seasons. HUSKIES COLLECT PAC-12 WEEKLY HONORS A revamped weekly volleyball conference awards system debuted this season, with separate honors for the offensive, defensive, and freshman players of the week. Washington claimed two of the first three honors, as senior Bianca Rowland earned the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week award and Krista Vansant earned Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the week of Aug. 22-28. The Huskies went 3-0 to start the season, capturing the title at the Long Beach State Mizuno Invitational. Rowland averaged an impressive 1.60 blocks per set over the weekend, as the Huskies held their opponents to a combined.086 attack percentage. Vansant was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament in her first weekend of college action. She had 30 kills over the three matches, averaging 3.00 per set and hitting.333. It was the first weekly honor for both Rowland and Vansant. The next week, Vansant was the top freshman once again, averaging 4.33 kills per set and hitting.400 at the Northwest Challenge where UW went 3-0. She had a season-best 16 kills vs. Boise State. On October 3, after sweeping the Oregon schools at home, Rowland earned her second Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week award. She had 15 blocks over the two matches, an average of 2.50 per set. COACHES TAB HUSKIES THIRD IN PAC-12 In a vote of the conference head coaches, the Husky volleyball team was picked third in the Pac-12 preseason poll. Washington is one of four Pac-12 teams that advanced at least to the Elite Eight last season. USC was the unanimous number one pick of the twelve conference coaches. The Trojans return every starter from their 2010 squad which reached the Final Four, earning 121 points in the poll. California, the NCAA runnerup last year, and the Pac-10 co-champion, was picked second with 105 points. The Bears defeated the Huskies in the Elite Eight last season. Washington was voted third with 97 points, the second year in a row that UW has been slotted third. Following the Huskies is defending conference co-champion Stanford, with 92 points. The Cardinal lost to USC in the Elite Eight last year. UCLA sits fifth with 90 points, and Oregon rounds out the top half in sixth-place with 65 points. Arizona and Arizona State go seventh and eighth, respectively, followed by Oregon State in ninth. Conference newcomers Utah and Colorado are 10th and 11th, with Washington State coming in 12th. 2010 IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR After and up and down regular season, the 2010 Huskies came together down the stretch and returned to the NCAA Elite Eight for the sixth time in the past eight years under Head Coach Jim McLaughlin. Washington beat three Top-25 teams at home, sweeping 23rd-ranked Michigan and 7th-ranked Hawaii, and then won an epic Sweet-16 match with No. 3 Nebraska, 3-1. The Huskies fell to eventual NCAA finalist California in the quarterfinals. Washington finished 24-9 overall and 10-8 in Pac-10 play, its most losses in conference since 2003. The team started the year with straight set wins in all ten preseason matches. Outside hitters Becky Perry and Kindra Carlson were both named to the All-Pac-10 Team and then both earned AVCA All-America Second Team honors. Setter Jenna Hagglund and middle blocker Bianca Rowland were All- Pac-10 honorable mention, and Rowland was an All-America honorable mention as well. Hagglund finished her career 10th in Pac-10 history with 5,326 assists, while Carlson and Perry finished eighth and tenth in career kills by a Husky. In her first season, redshirt freshman Jenna Orlandini was second in the Pac-10 in digs with a 4.82 average. The Huskies were second in the conference in opponent hitting percentage, limiting teams to.175, and they ranked second in aces (1.39), third in blocks (2.51), and fourth in hitting percentage (.283). Washington finished sixth in the final AVCA Top-25. DAWG PACK CONTINUES TO GROW Washington s incredible fans turned out in greater numbers than ever during the 2010 season, as the Huskies ranked fourth in national attendance, continuing to grow one of the best home court advantages in volleyball. The Huskies hosted NCAA first and second rounds as well as NCAA Regionals, and that allowed them to end an up and down regular season on a high note, advancing to the Elite Eight for the sixth time in eight years. After averaging 3,019 fans over 11 regular season matches, the number jumped to 4,014 fans per match during UW s four home postseason matches. Of the 15 hosted matches in 2010, total attendance came in at 49,470 giving an average match attendance of a school record 3,298. That ranked UW first in the Pac-10 for the sixth time in the past seven seasons. Hawaii led the way with 6,169 fans per match, followed by Nebraska (4,632), Wisconsin (3,737), Washington and then Penn State (3,274).
