Nowhere else can you get the mix of modern and traditional life that China offers. A society in which old meets new at every turn and where old traditions are swept along on the wave of modern society. Get a taste of the real China in the beautiful city of Yantai, in China's remote north-east. The city is an outpost of ancient civilisation and is still alive today with magnificent temples, set amongst lush green rolling hills. China has a deep routed tradition in martial art, with Masters passing down knowledge to students through the generations. Today all forms of martial arts have become very popular in the West. Frontier is proud to be working with the renowned Seven Star Mantis Kung Fu Masters Zhong Lianbao and Yu TainLu to bring you our China Kung Fu Program. Therefore by joining our program you not only have the chance to learn from a true Master, but also the opportunity to choose from the range of different styles and forms. Both Master Zhong and Master Yu have many years experience teaching both Chinese and International students. Your project is based in Shandong province, the birthplace of Chinese martial arts, commonly called wushu or kung fu in Mandarin. There are a number of fighting styles that have developed over the centuries in China. These fighting styles are often classified according to common traits, identified as "schools" of martial arts. Examples of such traits include physical exercises involving animal mimicry, or training methods inspired by Chinese philosophies, religions or legends. Styles which focus on Qi, or inner energy or "life force" manipulation are labelled as internal, while others that concentrate on improving muscle and cardiovascular fitness and are labelled external. WHAT WILL I BE DOING? On this project you will be given the chance to study alongside Kung Fu masters and train using various techniques to improve your martial art skills. You will start your training by learning about key components that make up Chinese martial arts; basics, forms, applications and weapons. Each style of Kung Fu places different emphasis on each component. In order to gain the most out of your Kung Fu project you will have the opportunity to study the philosophy and ethics and even the medical practice behind Chinese martial arts and Chinese attitudes and culture, considered essential by the masters in order to progress your Kung Fu skills.
You will study for 4 hours per day Monday to Friday. Each morning you will study your chosen Kung Fu / martial art for two hours and in the afternoon you will have two hours of Chinese mandarin tuition. The schedule and timetable are subject to adjustment with prior notice and can be tailored and negotiated for your convenience and individual requirements. You will get familiar with the basics, training in rudimentary techniques, conditioning exercises and stances. Basic training may involve repeating simple movements such as stretching, meditation, striking, throwing, and jumping, after all, practice makes perfect. You will work to build strong and flexible muscles, understanding proper body mechanics and management of Qi or breath. Depending on your skills and experience you may be offered the chance to learn specific forms, known as taolu in Chinese including Taijiqun, Sanda, Mantis Boxing or Shaolin Fist. These are a series of predetermined movements combined so they can be practiced as one linear set of movements. Forms were originally taught to specially selected students to preserve the lineage of a particular style of Kung Fu. Take part in group classes where you will be drilled in different forms and different conditioning techniques to improve your strength, stamina, balance, flexibility and coordination. You may also get the opportunity to learn forms that utilise the use of weapons, sparing with other students in the class to perfect your craft. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE? Upon your arrival at Yantai Laishan International Airport you will be picked up by a friendly member of staff who will transport you to your accommodation. Once you have had time to rest the local staff will introduce you to your project and the local area. Your in-country coordinator will be more than happy to help you settle in and acclimatise and you'll feel at home in no time in this diverse and friendly country. WHERE WILL I BE STAYING? There are a range of accommodation options available for this placement. You will either be staying in a welcoming homestay, in dorms on the university campus or at a local hostel. Check with your coordinator and let us know your preferences! All accommodation options come with basic amenities. WHAT WILL I BE EATING? Food is not provided as part of this programme. This is a fun element of travelling away from home as it gives you that added freedom and is a good opportunity to bond with fellow students while exploring local restaurants and market stalls! All meals are based on fresh produce that is purchased from the local area. Meals from the local university canteen cost around USD $1 per meal.
