Going to Hawaii: Let Us Share What We Love Nancy and I have been to Hawaii at least 20 times. We keep coming back because we love the people and culture in addition to the great weather, beaches and golf. The last several years we have spent our time on the Big Island. It has everything from desert to rain forests to mountains and beaches. We love it. Here is a list of our favorites: Lodging: When we first started coming to the Big Island we stayed in hotels. More recently we have rented homes and condominiums on http://www.vrbo.com/ Lodging Best Bargain for Golfers: Not sure if this price will hold after the holidays, but until December 20, 2009 you can get a two bedroom condo at Mauna Lani for $199 a night with no cleaning fee. We like unit L0404 http://www.southkohala.com/store/p20condo_details176.php Best Lodging in the Country (cattle and wild turkeys roam): You can rent luxurious homes at Kohala Ranch with great views of the ocean and sunset. These are several miles from the beach but the view and luxury are special. We have stayed in two wonderful homes. Here is a link to our favorite. http://www.vrbo.com/12402 Best Hotel for Families. We loved staying at http://www.hiltonwaikoloavillage.com/ We took my mother, aunt and daughter there for one Thanksgiving week. Our daughter Jill still ranks it as her favorite place to stay. Dining: Our Favorite Restaurants: We always stay far north of Kona so we don t know the restaurants there, or in Hilo. Here are the ones along the Kohala Coast that we like the best. Merriman s our favorite on the Island. We go every year. Located in Waimea http://www.merrimanshawaii.com/ Kawwihee Harbor Grill and Seafood Bar. For breakfast they have the largest pancakes I have ever seen. When we just want casual we go to the upstairs Seafood Bar and talk to the bartender co- owner and have the catch of the day at a low price before 6:30. http://kawaihae- restaurants.com/

Bamboo Restaurant. Located in Hawi Town, a neat small town. We like it for lunch, only so- so for dinner. http://www.bamboorestaurant.info/restaurant.htm Tommy Bahama Café at Mauni Lani. We go there our first night to sit in the bar area listen to the music and have our favorite drinks and menu items. http://www.tommybahama.com/tbg/cafes.jsp Daniel Thiebaut Located in Waimea. The antique furniture is pure old Hawaii. We had a wonderful lunch there. Have not been there for dinner. http://www.danielthiebaut.com/ Canoe House at Mauna Lani Hotel You can sit out and watch the sunset. We took my mother, aunt and daughter here for dinner and enjoyed it. Expensive, but good food. http://www.maunalani.com/d_ch_overview.htm Tex Drive-In If you are traveling along the Hamakua Coast and want a quick meal stop by Tex Drive- In. They are known for their Malasadas ( a donut like sugar fix). We have gone for lunch and sat outside eating fish burgers. Favorite Spa/Massage We have never had a massge at the luxury resorts. They are quite expensive there. This year we found Hawaii Island Retreat at Ahu- Pohaku- Ho omaluhia. It is in the far north Kohala Coast. There are 9-10 rooms to stay with no TVs in the room. You may not be able to use your iphone or Blackberry. If you want to get away from all the hustle and bustle this is the place for you. http://www.hawaiiislandretreat.com/ Favorite Views I guess I am partial to valleys. Waipoi o Valley: Here are some photographs http://www.letsgo-hawaii.com/waipio/ Pololu Valley: You can look out from the top and if you game you can hike down the steep trail to the black beach. To give you and idea of the steepness coming back up, families who live in the area sell water to visitors. http://www.letsgo-hawaii.com/pololu/

Laupahoehoe Point : We have stopped here on our way to Hilo. Look for the turn- off and drive down to the site. We like to photograph the waves hitting the rocks. Take time to read about the tragedy that occurred in 1946 when a tsunami struck and demolished the school and killing teachers and students. Favorite Beaches: Kauna oa Bay at Mauana Kea. They say it is the most visually perfect beach. What we like best is that it is never crowded. We have been as much as 50 yards from others. Hapuna Beach. Beautiful beach for swimming, snorkeling and body boarding. More crowded especially on weekends. Makaiwa Bay. We go here when we stay at Mauna Lani. Favorite Local Experience Farmer s Markets: We love the local produce and the people who sell it. Each Saturday morning we go to two farmer s markets in Waimea. We see the same vendors year after year and we try new things. http://www.bigisland- bigisland.com/big- Island- Farmers- Markets.html Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company We like it because it it locally owned and run. http://www.hawnnut.com/ Kona Coffee Plantations. We love family owned Kona Coffee farms. Here is a discussion http://www.gohawaii.com/big_island/plan/things_to_do_on_big_island/attractions /points_of_interest/kona_coffee The Kona Coffee Cupping Festival in November each year is special http://www.konacoffeefest.com/schedule.asp Waimea Christmas Fair and Twilight Parade We love Waimea and their Christmas Parade each year us special. http://www.bigisland.org/calendar/1583/waimea- christmas- fair- and- twilight- parade Golf

Expensive but worth it. Mauna Kea Great ocean views http://www.maunakearesort.com/ Mauni Lani- two great courses we like the north the best http://www.maunalani.com/g_sc_overview.htm Medium Expense Kona Country Club- Mountain course more difficult than Ocean course. http://www.konagolf.com/konagolf/golf- course- ocean.cfm Funky Courses Big island Country Club http://www.bigisland.org/hawaii- golf- courses/1246/big- island- country- club Waikoloa Village http://www.bigisland.org/hawaii- golf- courses/1252/waikoloa- village- gc Waimea Country Club http://www.bigisland.org/hawaii- golf- courses/1253/waimea- country- club Makalei Golf Club http://www.bigisland.org/hawaii- golf- courses/1248/makalei- golf- club Favorite Walking/Hiking Spots: Ala Kahakai Trail This is a six mile trail along the beaches. There is a lot of up and down walking/hiking and it is quite a workout. Make sure to wear close toed running or hiking shoes. We walked from Spencer Beach Park at the south end to the Mauna Kea golf course. Mauna Lani Area We typically start at the Beach access area south of the Fairmont Orchid. You can walk north to Puako Waialea Bay. Walk south past Fairmont Orchid and Mauna Lani Bay Hotel to the beach at Makaiwa Bay. Our Favorite Guided Things to Do We have not gone on the helicopter trips or gone deep sea fishing, but we hear both are great fun. Fairwinds Guided Snorkeling We go every year, The crew could not be nicer. Great for kids.

http://www.fair- wind.com/ Ride the Rim ATV We did this in the rain so we were unable to see the great views at Waipi o Valley. The guides are very nice. You can also hike the rim or see it on horseback. http://www.ridetherim.com/
