Myrtle Beach Pelicans (0-0, 0-0 Road) T-1st Place, CL Southern PELICANS BEGIN PLAY IN CHARLESTON Prior to embarking on their Carolina League slate, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans travel to Charleston s Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park to battle the RiverDogs in the Battle of the Beaches exhibition series. Seperated by just 95 miles on Highway 17, Myrtle Beach and Charleston are home to two of the best vacation spots in the United States. The two-year series pits the Pelicans in Charleston to begin the 2016 season, with the RiverDogs returning the favor with a trip to Myrtle Beach in 2017. REGULAR SEASON BEGINS THURSDAY After taking on the Charleston RiverDogs in the Battle of the Beaches exhibition series Wednesday, the Pelicans turn right around up Highway 17 to begin the 2016 regular season. Myrtle Beach has made the postseason in each of the last five seasons, culminating with their 2015 Mills Cup Championship - the club s first since 2000. The defense of the team s title begins with a four-game series that starts Thursday against the Frederick Keys. The Pelicans conclude their season-opening seven-game homestand by hosting the Winston-Salem Dash in a rematch of last season s Southern Division Championship Series. BAILEY RETURNS TO THE CIRCUIT The seventh manager in Pelicans history is Buddy Bailey, who enters his 28th year as a minor league manager. A 16th-round pick by the Atlanta Braves out of Lynchburg College in 1979, Bailey played part of the 1982 season with the Durham Bulls, then of the Carolina League. The Virginia native, who grew up just outside the Hill City, began managing in 1983 - just one year after his playing career ended - and later served as the skipper of the Lynchburg Red Sox during the 1991 and 1992 seasons. Thus, the 2016 campaign is his third stint in the Carolina League. A member of the Cubs organization since 2007, Bailey has nurtured talents like Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber, Jorge Soler, Addison Russell, Javier Baez, Chris Archer and Starlin Castro. He owns a 1848-1716 (.519) career record. REST OF STAFF Hitting coach Mariano Duncan returns for his second straight year in the Grand Strand, and his fourth consecutive as the Chicago Cubs High-A hitting coach. The 12-year major league veteran (1985-87, 1989-97) joined the Cubs in 2011 after spending the previous five seasons (2006-10) as the Dodgers major league first base coach. Anderson Tavarez heads to Myrtle Beach after serving as Class A Short Season Eugene s pitching coach last season. The Dominican Republic native helped tutor Emeralds pitchers to the second-best ERA (3.55) in the Northwest League in 2015. Eugune also posted the circuit s most strikeouts (691). Rounding out the Pelicans field staff is Juan Cabreja, who served as the Dominican Cubs manager in both 2014 and 2015. Cabreja began his coaching career as a bench coach with the DSL Cubs from 2004-06 before managing the team in 2007 and 2008. He spent three years as the skipper of the Arizona League Cubs from 2009-11. Toby Williams and Jason Morriss serve as the team s athletic trainer and strength and conditioning coach, respectively. at Wednesday, April 6, 2016-7:05 p.m. Joseph P. Highlighting the Pelicans 2016 Opening Day roster are Gleyber Torres and Ian Happ. With the latter transitioning to second base in 2016, the duo will form the Birds middle infield combination. Torres, just 19-years-old, is ranked by MLB.com as the 28th-best prospect in all of baseball, with Baseball America placing him 41st. The native of Caracas, Venezuela debuted with Myrtle Beach on September 2 of last season after spending his tenure in the Midwest League as the circuit s second-youngest player. He led Low-A South Bend in 10 different offensive categories. Happ, the ninth overall selection in last year s draft by the Cubs, is ranked as the 76th overall prospect by MLB.com and 87th by Baseball America. The Pittsburgh native is embarking on his first season in professional baseball after earning First Team All-American status during his junior year at the University of Cincinnati. During his three-year collegiate career, he reached base about 46% of the time....and FIVE OF THE CUBS TOP 30 Torres and Happ make up 40% of Myrtle Beach s roster representation in Baseball America s list of the organization s best 30 prospects. Trevor Clifton (No. 18) and Jake Stinnett (No. 21) will team up to help lead the starting rotation. Clifton was the only South Bend pitcher to eclipse 100 strikeouts (103) in 2015, doing so in just 108.2 innings. Stinnett, a University of Maryland product, improved on a 5.29 ERA in the campaign s first half with a 3.86 mark in the second half. In the back end of the Birds bullpen is David Berg (No. 30), who saved four games in Myrtle Beach s championship 2015 run. The sidearming UCLA Bruin set an NCAA record with 24 saves in a single season during his final run in Los Angeles. PELICANS SET STARTING ROTATION Myrtle Beach will operate with a strong mix of experience and talent in their six-man starting rotation. Carolina League ERA leader Jonathan Martinez (2.56) returns to serve as the team s Opening Day starter against Frederick on Thursday. He will be followed by newcomers Zach Hedges, Trevor Clifton, Erick Leal, Jake Stinnett and the only southpaw in the rotation, Tommy Thorpe. FLOCKING BACK TO THE NEST Twelve Pelicans flocked back to Myrtle Beach on the club s 27-man Opening Day roster. The pitching staff is a mix of returnees and newcomers, with Daury Torrez notably returning to the Grand Strand in 2016, only in a relieving role. Of the club s 14 position players, six come back to Myrtle Beach. Half of those are outfielders Jeffrey Baez (5 G), Shawon Dunston Jr. (17 G) and Trey Martin, with only the latter playing in more than 20 games with the Birds in 2015. OPENING DAY IS A GOOD DAY The Pelicans have won six of their last eight Opening Day contests. Interestingly enough, Myrtle Beach has played Wilmington in nine of the last 10 Opening Days. However, the Pelicans host Frederick to begin the 2016 regular year.
