THE FREEDOM STAR FREEDOM MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS 750 NEW HWY 96-W, FRANKLIN, TN 37064 PH: 794-0987 7th ADAM DEMONBREUN **PRINCIPAL: KRISTI JEFFERSON** 8th AMANDA MUNIZ FROM THE PRINCIPAL S DESK: We had a phenomenal opening of school for the 2017-2018 school year! Behind this success were office staff, PTO parent volunteers, teachers, paraprofessionals, custodial staff, and administrators committed to providing a smooth, easy-to-understand process for registering our students online along with a well planned process for students to get their schedules, a school t-shirt, and greet their teachers before arriving for the first day of school on August 10 th. Our mission at Freedom Middle is to promote Personal Best + Collaborative Effort = Excellence for all in every aspect of your child s life. In so doing, we ask all individuals including teachers, students, administrators, support staff, cafeteria workers, and custodians to give their personal best each day, to work together to get the job done, and to realize that excellence will be achieved if we do what is asked. We are committed to our mission! A huge THANK YOU! goes to our PTO parents who provided our staff with a delicious breakfast on Friday, August 4 th, assisted at the Meet and Greet on Tuesday, August, and worked at our Book Fair to make it run smoothly. Additionally, our PTO has been instrumental in starting the online store where a variety of FMS items are offered for purchase at various times throughout the school year. Our first PTO meeting, for the 2017-2018 school year, will be held on Friday, September 22 nd, at 9 a.m. in the FMS Cafeteria Annex. The involvement of parents in their child s school is one of the key components for student success. If you would like to be a part of the FMS PTO, it is never too late to join and volunteer to help in our school! The first quarter progress report, containing a compilation of assignments and grades for each class in which your child is enrolled, was sent home with (Continued on page 2) SEPTEMBER 2017 SEPTEMBER STUDENTS OF THE MONTH AT FMS! The following students were selected by their teachers as the student(s) of the month: Aaron Beaman Skyler Duplessis Ana Gonzalez Donovan Nevils - Kemi Onadeko Cam Parker - Madelyn Rose Caleb White Each of these students was chosen because he/she has a great attitude, exhibits positive behavior, is extremely pleasant, and is an all-around good person. Further, you may check the progress of your child in each class throughout the year by using Family Access in Skyward. If you have not received information from us concerning how to access this site, please call the school, 615.794.0987, and we will be glad to provide this information. Please be reminded of the important dates and times listed below: September 11 th - Freedom Fundraiser Kickoff!: Yesterday, your child received a packet, containing all the information concerning our school s major fundraiser event. This packet details the items for which this fundraiser will help purchase and how FMS students, their families, and FMS staff may support this endeavor. We will need your assistance to make this event a HUGE success. Wednesday, September 13 th, and Monday, September 18th: Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on each of these days from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. Information on how to schedule conferences with your child s teachers has been sent out in the Sunday afternoon email you receive weekly at 5 p.m., FMS Twitter, and in the FMS Newsletter you are currently reading. October 9 th 13 th : Fall Break You are encouraged to visit our updated website to stay current on all events at/information from FMS. Additionally, you will receive weekly updates through email each Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m. As always, we welcome comments, concerns, suggestions, and praise. Thank you for helping us promote our mission of Personal Best + Collaborative Effort = Excellence for All! Working Together With You, - Kristi Jefferson The FMS PTO is a body of volunteers, parents, teachers and administration who work together to enhance the school experience for the entire school community. We all have ONE main objective - to encourage volunteerism in our school. "How"? you may ask... 1. To communicate regularly and consistently about volunteer opportunities 2. To engage students and parents in activities to meet other families 3. To promote athletics as a positive way to come together and share in a fun, common experience 4. To respect and value each family, each student, and each member of the FMS staff 5. To raise money for the needs of the school 6. To engage the community in supporting the school because we are stronger when we have the support of various businesses and local government It is only September and we have accomplished a great deal. We are sincerely grateful for the many, many folks that have contributed their time, energy, money, and resources! We have had an amazing PTO membership drive, a great turnout in purchasing spirit bracelets/spirit wear, a successful fall book fair, a fabulous response from our community sponsors for the student's free t-shirts, and last but not least, we sold the first annual athletic passes to bring families together in support of FMS athletics! We cannot rest... let's keep this fantastic momentum going... great schools need great parents! YOUR help is needed to make Freedom FunDay an event to remember! The "FunDay" is a student celebration of their work in raising funds for Freedom Middle. The students can participate in different activities and if all families are able to contribute, we can easily reach our goal. Freedom Middle is in need of equipment that enhances the educational experience for everyone - students, families and staff very cool robotics kits for STEM class (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) music instrument repair/replacement and theater supplies a new sound system to use during ceremonies, assemblies and sporting events laminators and repair/replacement of Promethean boards and projectors large screens for the gym We can do this! Hello FMS families! FSSD is currently accredited through AdvancED, an international accrediting agency, and is seeking reaccreditation this year. This process of pursuing reaccreditation occurs every five years. As we are committed to continuous improvement, we will be spending time reviewing and analyzing our practices to uncover our strengths and areas to improve. To do this, FMS is asking students, school staff, teachers, and parents to help! Your voice is valued and your participation desired! In the days and weeks to come you will be receiving links to complete surveys about school climate, participation, purpose, school supports, etc. During this first semester as we analyze various forms of data, you may be asked to be a part of a team working through this process and discussing various elements of the work. When the AdvancED Engagement Review Team comes to the FSSD, you may be invited to come in to meet with members of this team and talk about FMS. Your views, thoughts and ideas are important in this re-accreditation journey! There will be more information to follow in the near future. We wanted to make you aware of this continuous improvement journey and we look forward to working together to better our school! Thank you, FMS Administration Congratulations to the cast of Snoopy! We have 60 fine performers and a great crew who are set to bring these beloved characters to life. We are looking forward to a wonderful show in January! In all guidance classes this month I started by sharing my role at FMS, to support every student, and then discussed a main mission of mine: "every student has the right to come to school and feel safe and respected". I have asked for their help with this by intervening if they notice someone having a hard time or if "playing" becomes "messing". It is important they let me or someone else know if it does not stop. If you hear of an issue or feel that something is going on with your child, please let me know so we can support all feeling safe and respected at school. In 8th grade we discussed self-esteem and how this is a huge part of adolescence: figuring out who they are! We then addressed how self-esteem is significant on how we interact with each other and if we are willing to speak up for ourselves, or others. Lastly we considered the implications self-esteem when dealing with negative peer pressure. September is Suicide Prevention Month so we will be addressing the warning signs and what to do if they feel they have a peer in need of support. We will continue or discussion of self-esteem. In 7th grade we focused on goal setting. To teach the goal-setting process we used a grade level goal of being organized: 1) use the planner every day for every academic subject, and 2) all papers are placed in a subject area of their binder... no loose papers. Every student came up with a specific academic goal. They chose one class and a grade they hope to achieve, and then came up with steps on how to do it. Given how essential organization is to your child's success at school, I would strongly suggest every night you check your child's planner to see if it is filled in for EVERY class and their binder to make sure all papers are in the right place. If they are doing a good job it can just become a weekly check. With the progress reports coming out, this is a great time to discuss and re-evaluate goals and make changes if necessary (September's guidance). As always, don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns for your child... we need them here everyday ready to learn. Bruce Coberly (Mr. C.) -- FMS School Counselor coberlybru@fssd.org 615-794-0987 x. 3514
