Southern Arkansas University 2012 Mulerider Football THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2012 HTTP://WWW.MULERIDERATHLETICS.COM Southern Arkansas University Muleriders (4-1, 3-1 GAC) @ East Central University Tigers (3-3, 1-2 GAC) WHEN: OCTOBER 13, 2012 WHERE: ADA, OKLA. @ NORRIS FIELD KICKOFF: 2:00 P.M. The Series (7-6, Southern Arkansas) Saturday s game is the 14th meeting between Southern Arkansas and East Central in a series that began in 1953, and will be only the second time the teams have faced each other as conference opponents. Last year s meeting was the first in 13 years. Prior to last year, the series had been played in a pair of six-game stretches, with the squads locking up on the field from 1953-1958 and again from 1993-1998. The Tigers served as the Muleriders season-opener in seven of those 12 years. SAU opened the 1953 and 1954 seasons with a 25-13 win in Magnolia and a 14-0 shutout in Ada, Okla., before ECU got its first win in Magnolia in the 1955 season-opener by an 18-6 margin. Southern Arkansas claimed two more wins the next two years, 7-6 in Ada, and a 7-0 blanking in the 1957 season-opener in Magnolia. East Central bounced back with a shutout of its own, 13-0 the next year in Ada, and at the time, its largest margin of victory over the series. It would be 35 years before the teams would meet again, with the Tigers continuing their suspended winning streak, claiming a 44-36 victory in Ada in 1993, en route to winning the NAIA national championship. They made it three in a row, their longest winning streak of the series, the next year in a 14-12 win in Magnolia. The Muleriders stopped the skid in 1995 with a 17-7 victory in Ada, but ECU responded with a 14-3 decision the next year in Magnolia. SAU won the next two meetings, a 37-9 game in Ada in 1997 for its largest margin of victory, and claiming its third shutout in the series with a 24-0 win in 1998 in Magnolia. East Central piled up its largest margin of victory in the series last year in Ada, a 49-6 game to end the regular season. SAU leads the series by a 7-6 margin, holding a 4-3 advantage in games played in Ada, while the series is even at 3-3 in Magnolia. The Coaches Hired as the 19th head coach at Southern Arkansas in December 2008, Bill Keopple (Central Arkansas, 1982) is in his fourth season with the Muleriders, where he is now 11-24 overall. He previously had spent six years as head coach at Arkansas High School in Texarkana, compiling a 44-26-1 record, five consecutive state playoff appearances, two 6A South Conference titles, and 6A state championships in 2006 and 2007. In 1996 he served as athletic director and head coach at Newport High School, guiding the Greyhounds to the state playoffs in an 8-3 season, giving him an overall mark of 52-29-1 in his seven years at the high school level. Keopple has 18 years of experience as an assistant in the collegiate ranks. He spent the 2002 season on former Arkansas defensive coordinator Keith Burn s staff at Tulsa, coaching the defensive line and serving as recruiting coordinator. He served two years under Houston Nutt at Arkansas in 1998 and 1999, and was with Nutt at Boise State in 1997, coaching the defensive line at both schools. Keopple was an honorable mention All-District and All-AIC selection for Central Arkansas and got his start there as a graduate assistant in 1982. He spent 14 years with the Bears coaching the offensive line and was offensive coordinator from 1990-95. Tim McCarty (Fort Hays State (Kan.), 1985) is in the fourth season of his second stint as head coach at East Central. Prior to joining the Great American Conference, he guided the Tigers to their first and only Lone Star Conference North championship in 2010, and is now 25-33 over six seasons at ECU, including 2004 and 2005 as head coach, and is 45-54 overall in 10 years. In between McCarty s two stints at East Central, he spent three seasons (2006-2008) as assistant head coach and offensive line coach at Kansas State under Head Coach Ron Prince. He coached six All-Big 12 players while with the Wildcats, with his 2007 offensive line ranked first in the conference in fewest sacks allowed and the team rated first in red zone offense. Prior to his first stop with the Tigers, McCarty was head coach at Tabor (Kan.) College for four years, improving from winless (0-10) in 2000 to 5-5 (2001), 6-4 (2002) and 9-2 and a conference championship in 2003. VS. Mulerider Football History Southern Arkansas has had a football program since 1911, but will have to wait until the 2017 season to truly commemorate 100 years of Mulerider football. SAU didn t field a team from 1937-1939 and 1942-1945, a total of seven years, making 2012 the 95th football season. SAU was founded in 1909 as the Third District Agricultural School, with G.R. Turrentine serving as the inaugural head coach in 1911. The team played only two games that first year, losing both in Magnolia by shutouts, 19-0 to Texarkana (Texas) High School and 9-0 to Camden High School. The team was commonly called the Magnolia Aggies until the early 1920 s, but Turrentine, who went on to coach for a total of seven years, is credited with providing the moniker of Muleriders following the team s final game of the 1912 season, a Thanksgiving date at Fordyce High School. A few days after that game, members of the team rode mules to Coach Turrentine s home to discuss their final game and he greeted them with My Mule Riders. That was the first known time the term was used, and the name eventually stuck, changing from two words to the compound Muleriders. SAU is now 433-414-30 in its 95th year of football since the first season of play in 1911, and is currently 6-5 all-time in Great American Conference games and 199-198-11 against teams currently in the GAC. Bill Keopple enters his fourth season as head football coach at Southern Arkansas, hired in December 2008 as the 19th coach to lead the Muleriders. Keopple has accumulated 28 years of coaching experience, including his first stint as a head coach on the collegiate level at SAU. He served 18 years as an assistant in the college ranks with stops at Tulsa, Arkansas, Boise State and Central Arkansas. Prior to coming to Southern Arkansas, Keopple served six years (2003-2008) as head coach at Arkansas High School in Texarkana. His teams were 44-26-1 during his six seasons, advancing to the state playoffs the last five and winning consecutive state championships in 2006 and 2007. Keopple s 2005 and 2006 Razorback teams were 6A South Conference champions. He was honored in 2006 as the 6A State Farm Coach of the Year, as well as 6A Outstanding Coach by the National Football Foundation in both 2006 and 2007, and was selected to serve on the Arkansas high school football All- Star coaching staffs in 2004 and 2007. Before taking over the reins at Texarkana, Keopple was at the University of Tulsa in 2002 on former Arkansas defensive coordinator Keith Burns staff. He spent that season coaching the defensive line and serving as recruiting coordinator for the Golden Hurricane. Keopple served as an assistant under Houston Nutt at Arkansas in 1998 and 1999, and was with Nutt at Boise State in 1997, coaching the defensive line at both schools. The Razorbacks were 1998 SEC Western Division champions, finishing 9-3 and playing Michigan in the Citrus Bowl. Arkansas had the fifth-ranked rushing defense in the nation that season and was ranked seventh in total defense. The 1999 Razorbacks went 8-4 and defeated Texas in the Cotton Bowl, finishing the season 12th in rushing defense and 17th in total defense. Keopple went to Boise State from Newport High School where he was head coach and athletic director in 1996. He guided the Greyhounds to the state playoffs in an 8-3 season, giving him an overall mark of 52-29-1 in his seven years as a head coach on the high school level. Record Watch 1 Southern Arkansas junior starting quarterback Tyler Sykora continued his assault on the Mulerider record book last week against Harding, setting the new career mark for pass attempts. His 41 passes in the game lifted him to 574 in his career, breaking the old mark of 556 set by Cody Vanderford from 1983-1986. Sykora should be able to garner at least one more career record this season, as he currently has 4,203 yards of total offense and needs 1,140 yards to tie former quarterback Ted Williams 5,343 set from 2000-2003. Sykora has thrown 14 touchdown passes so far this season and needs just five more to match his own school record of 19 set last year. The southpaw currently owns 11 school records, including four career and season marks, and three single-game records. Record Watch 2 Mulerider junior running back Mark Johnson is close to a couple of career records himself. He currently has 24 rushing touchdowns in his career and needs three more to tie the record of 27 held by Torrence Jones (2001-2004), and his 461 career rushing attempts are just 136 shy of Gerald Pride s 597 (1979-1982). SAU had won the previous two meetings in Ada, 17-7 in 1995, and a 37-9 decision in 1997 en route to a share of the Gulf South Conference championship. Prior to last year s game, the Tigers hadn t beaten Southern Arkansas in Ada since a 44-36 win in 1993 on their way to the NAIA national championship. * A bright spot for the Muleriders in last year s game was the play of running back Mark Johnson, who had 26 rushes for 116 yards and one touchdown, with the 116 yards putting him over 1,000 yards rushing for the year. He became the first SAU player to rush for at least 1,000 yards since D.D. Holyfield s 1,154 in 2005, finishing the year with 1,009 yards, and 13 rushing touchdowns that matched second-best in a season with four former Southern Arkansas players. The Muleriders were without the services of starting quarterback Tyler Sykora in last year s meeting, as he suffered a broken hand the week prior in a 53-28 win over Arkansas- Monticello in Magnolia. * SAU hopes to put an end to ECU s home win streak Saturday...East Central has won 10 straight at home, a streak that began October 16, 2010, and which matches the school record set during the 1992 and 1993 seasons. * Despite last Saturday s 23-20 loss to Harding, Southern Arkansas received three votes in this week s AFCA poll. The votes in the poll were the first time for the Muleriders since the fourth poll on September 21, 2004. The last time they were ranked was at 20th, on September 7 earlier that year.
