Southern Arkansas University 2012 Mulerider Football THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2012 HTTP://WWW.MULERIDERATHLETICS.COM Southern Arkansas University Muleriders (3-0, 2-0 GAC) @ University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (1-3, 0-2 GAC) Battle of the Timberlands WHEN: SEPTEMBER 29, 2012 WHERE: MONTICELLO, ARK. @ CONVOY LESLIE COTTON BOLL STADIUM KICKOFF: 6:00 P.M. The Series (51-35-1, Southern Arkansas) Saturday s game is the 88th meeting between Southern Arkansas and Arkansas- Monticello in a series that began in 1913 and is the longest-standing rivalry for the Muleriders. The Boll Weevils concluded their sixth win of the first nine games in the series with their largest margin ever, a 46-0 shutout in Monticello in 1924. SAU returned the favor the next season with its largest margin of victory, a 91-0 blowout in Magnolia that started a streak of three wins to even it at six wins apiece. The series has only one tie, a scoreless stalemate in El Dorado in 1933. Southern Arkansas longest string of wins was an 11-game stretch from 1967-1977, including a 43-0 blanking in its final game of the 1972 season that gave the Muleriders a share of the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference championship. UAM owns a pair of five-win streaks, from 1962-1966 and 1992-1996. Following the 1996 game, SAU won the next seven until Arkansas-Monticello pulled out a 33-31 victory in Magnolia in 2004. The 1999 game was initially a 23-20 Boll Weevil win, but UAM had to forfeit it because of the use of an ineligible player. Following the 2004 game, Southern Arkansas bounced back with four straight victories, 52-21 in 2005 in Monticello; 18-15 in 2006 in a game that had to be played at Magnolia High School s Panther Stadium; and 38-21 and 23-16 victories in Monticello in 2007 and 2008, respectively, giving the Muleriders 11 wins in 12 games. In 2009 and 2010, the teams competed at a neutral site in the Boomtown Classic in El Dorado, with Arkansas- Monticello winning both, a 17-6 decision in the inaugural classic in 2009 and 28-23 the next year. SAU snapped the two-game skid last year in Magnolia, 58-23. SAU leads the series by a 51-35-1 margin, holding a 22-16 advantage in games played in Magnolia, 26-17 in Monticello, and 3-2-1 in six games in El Dorado. The Coaches Hired as the 19th head coach at Southern Arkansas in December 2008, Bill Keopple (Central Arkansas, 1982) is in his fourth season with the Muleriders, where he is now 10-23 overall. He previously had spent six years as head coach at Arkansas High School in Texarkana, compiling a 44-26-1 record, five consecutive state playoff appearances, two 6A South Conference titles, and 6A state championships in 2006 and 2007. In 1996 he served as athletic director and head coach at Newport High School, guiding the Greyhounds to the state playoffs in an 8-3 season, giving him an overall mark of 52-29-1 in his seven years at the high school level. Keopple has 18 years of experience as an assistant in the collegiate ranks. He spent the 2002 season on former Arkansas defensive coordinator Keith Burn s staff at Tulsa, coaching the defensive line and serving as recruiting coordinator. He served two years under Houston Nutt at Arkansas in 1998 and 1999, and was with Nutt at Boise State in 1997, coaching the defensive line at both schools. Keopple was an honorable mention All-District and All-AIC selection for Central Arkansas and got his start there as a graduate assistant in 1982. He spent 14 years with the Bears coaching the offensive line and was offensive coordinator from 1990-95. William Hud Jackson (McNeese State (La.), 1992) has compiled a 6-9 mark in his second season at UAM, following a 5-6 record last year in his first as a collegiate head coach. He spent the previous six years as associate head coach at Central Arkansas, serving as director of football operations and coaching running backs and return specialists. Prior to joining the staff at UCA, Jackson was at Central Catholic High School in Morgan City, La., from 1997-2005 where he was athletic director and both head football and baseball coach. At Central, his 1997 football team was state runnerup and he won three state baseball championships. Jackson began his coaching career at Rayne (La.) High School where he stayed two years (1992-1993), before moving to Assumption High School in Napoleonville, La., serving three seasons as football offensive coordinator and assistant baseball coach. From there, he went to Oberlin (La.) High School (1995-97) as athletic director and head football and baseball coach. Jackson was a three-year starter at quarterback and lettered in baseball during his collegiate career at McNeese State (1987-1992), playing football for three years under his father, Head Coach Sonny Jackson. Mulerider Football History Southern Arkansas has had a football program since 1911, but will have to wait until the 2017 season to truly commemorate 100 years of Mulerider football. SAU didn t field a team from 1937-1939 and 1942-1945, a total of seven years, making 2012 the 95th football season. Southern Arkansas was founded in 1909 as the Third District Agricultural School, with G.R. Turrentine serving as the inaugural head coach in 1911. The team played only two games that first year, losing both in Magnolia by shutouts, 19-0 to Texarkana (Texas) High School and 9-0 to Camden High School. The team was commonly called the Magnolia Aggies until the early 1920 s, but Turrentine, who went on to coach for a total of seven years, is credited with providing the moniker of Muleriders following the team s final game of the 1912 season, a Thanksgiving date at Fordyce High School. A few days after that game, members of the team rode mules to Coach Turrentine s home to discuss their final game and he greeted them with My Mule Riders. That was the first known time the term was used, and the name eventually stuck, changing from two words to the compound Muleriders. SAU is now 432-413-30 in its 95th year of football since the first season of play in 1911. The Muleriders are currently 5-4 all-time in Great American Conference games, and 198-197-11 against teams currently in the GAC. Bill Keopple enters his fourth season as head football coach at Southern Arkansas, hired in December 2008 as the 19th coach to lead the Muleriders. Keopple has accumulated 28 years of coaching experience, including his first stint as a head coach on the collegiate level at SAU. He served 18 years as an assistant in the college ranks with stops at Tulsa, Arkansas, Boise State and Central Arkansas. Prior to coming to Southern Arkansas, Keopple served six years (2003-2008) as head coach at Arkansas High School in Texarkana. His teams were 44-26-1 during his six seasons, advancing to the state playoffs the last five and winning consecutive state championships in 2006 and 2007. Keopple s 2005 and 2006 Razorback teams were 6A South Conference champions. He was honored in 2006 as the 6A State Farm Coach of the Year, as well as 6A Outstanding Coach by the National Football Foundation in both 2006 and 2007, and was selected to serve on the Arkansas high school football All- Star coaching staffs in 2004 and 2007. Before taking over the reins at Texarkana, Keopple was at the University of Tulsa in 2002 on former Arkansas defensive coordinator Keith Burns staff. He spent that season coaching the defensive line and serving as recruiting coordinator for the Golden Hurricane. Keopple served as an assistant under Houston Nutt at Arkansas in 1998 and 1999, and was with Nutt at Boise State in 1997, coaching the defensive line at both schools. The Razorbacks were 1998 SEC Western Division champions, finishing 9-3 and playing Michigan in the Citrus Bowl. Arkansas had the fifth-ranked rushing defense in the nation that season and was ranked seventh in total defense. The 1999 Razorbacks went 8-4 and defeated Texas in the Cotton Bowl, finishing the season 12th in rushing defense and 17th in total defense. Keopple went to Boise State from Newport High School where he was head coach and athletic director in 1996. He guided the Greyhounds to the state playoffs in an 8-3 season, giving him an overall mark of 52-29-1 in his seven years as a head coach on the high school level. The 2012 meeting has added significance as the game will now be forever titled as the Battle of the Timberlands, with the winner taking home a newly-created traveling trophy. The teams first met in their respective third seasons of existence, and for a period of time, faced each other for 55 consecutive seasons over their 87 meetings. A win Saturday at Arkansas-Monticello would be the first time the Muleriders have won four consecutive games since the 2003 team reeled off six straight to end the regular season, and would be the first 4-0 start since 1999, but that comes with an asterisk. The 1999 squad won its first nine games en route to a 9-1 finish, but actually lost the third game of the season, 23-20, to Arkansas- Monticello, before drawing a forfeit afterwards for UAM s use of an ineligible player. The 1990 season is the last time SAU started 4-0 on the field, winning its first six games on the way to an 8-3-1 finish and a season-ending appearance in the Aztec Bowl in Mexico City. * Southern Arkansas junior quarterback Tyler Sykora is the reigning GAC offensive player of the week after rallying the Muleriders from a 14-0 deficit to a 35-34 win over Southwestern Oklahoma State Saturday in Magnolia. Sykora tossed the winning touchdown pass with 5:10 left in the game, his fifth scoring pass of the game and tying his own school record, a feat he achieved twice last year. He was 24 of 36 passing for 281 yards, with his 24 pass completions lifting him to 287 in his career, setting the new school mark in that category, and the five touchdown passes gives him 35 in his career, tying the school record. Sykora is fast closing in on two more career records, with 499 pass attempts he needs 57 more to tie Cody Vanderford s (1983-86) 556, and his 3,701 passing yards is 183 yards shy of Ted Williams (2000-03) 3,884.
