GENERAL INFORMATION SOLO DANCERS (ORI TAHITI) REGISTRATION DEADLINE Early Registration Postmark by February 24, 2017 Late Registration Postmark by March 10, 2017 Make checks payable to: KIKI RAINA Tel. If the dancer is chosen to advance, they will perform a choreographed solo number to either house drummers or their troupe. PERFORMANCE DATE Elimination rounds for majority of categories will take place Saturday morning, March 24, 2017, with the exception of the Masters and Grand Masters categories performing Friday evening. CHECK IN Contestants must check in between 7:00 am - 8:00 am on the day(s) of their performance for free entry. Family and friends of competitors must purchase their own tickets. For groups with a large number of soloists, however, a free support pass will be issued for every seven (7) solo dancer participants. The purpose of these passes is for the group s leadership to designate helpers on the day of participation only. Additionally, each group with at least seven (7) soloists will be given five (5) passes for finalist drummers only. Drummer lists must be submitted at registration by the instructor or director. SOLOIST TERMINOLOGY Classification: Sex segmented dancer: male or female Divisions: Separation into one (1) of nine (9) age divisions. Categories: Advanced/Professional: One whose performance is rated as professional or who has been awarded a first place or most outstanding dancer award in a professional group or solo competition, or one who performs more than twenty (20) shows a year, or a person older than nine (9) years of age who has consistently danced for more than two (2) years. Novice/Beginner/Intermediate: One who has never won a first place or most outstanding dancer award in a solo or a senior professional group competition after the age of nine (9); taking classes less than two (2) years and not a regular dancer at paid performances with current or previous group. CLASSIFICATION Contestants will compete in one (1) of the following classifications: Vahine Female soloists Tane Male Soloist 1

DIVISIONS Contestants must compete in their corresponding age divisions. TAMARI I I. 4-6 Years II. 7-9 Years JUNIOR III. 10-12 Years IV. 13-15 Years SENIOR V. 16-19 Years VI. 20-24 Years VII. 25-34 Years MASTERS VIII. 35-44 Years GRAND MASTERS IX. 45 and up OVERSIZED DIVISIONS For divisions containing more than twelve (12) dancers, the dancers will be split into two (2) or more groups for the elimination process. ELIMINATIONS All contestants must enter the eliminations! The dancers will perform a combination of basic Tahitian Pehe, which may include Bora Bora, Mo orea, Paea, Pahae, Takotou and Vahine Tahiti, which will be performed by house drummers. FINALIST SELECTION For divisions containing twelve (12) dancers or less, the judges will select five (5) finalists. For divisions containing more than twelve (12) dancers, the number of finalists will increase by one (1) for every four (4) dancers more than twelve (12). CATEGORIES Contestants will compete in one (1) of the following: Advanced/ Professional Dancer Novice/Beginner/Intermediate Dancer FINALIST PLACEMENT The finalists selected will compete against each other in their division, classification, and category for 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd place. 2

FINALIST DRUMMERS Each dancer may perform their own solo to their own drummers, not to exceed five (5) drummers. Dancers without their own drummers may utilize the selected House Drummers. If using one s own drummers, any Tahitian pehe (drum beats) may be used. OVERALL CHAMPIONS First place winners of each division s Vahine and Tane Advanced category are eligible to compete for Overall Champion. Last year s Overall Champions are welcome to apply and enter the overall championships which are held Sunday morning. Overall winners will be featured in the program the following year. SCORING CRITERIA 100 Points Maximum Originality and Workmanship of Costumes 25 Points Maximum Stage Presence/ Personality 25 Points Maximum Execution and Precision of Movement 25 Points Maximum Choreography 25 Points Maximum AWARDS 1st, 2nd, 3rd place trophies. Cash awards through 3rd place. NOTE TO DANCERS It is in the dancer s best interest to stay dressed in their solo costume for some time after the performance of the elimination rounds. There are times when a dance-off may be required and time will be saved if the contestant is not only in the performance area but is dressed and ready to dance as well. Dancers will be released after the soloists have been determined. NOTE TO DIRECTORS AND INSTRUCTORS Please pay close attention to these rules. There have been a number of ADVANCED dancers that have entered the BEGINNER category. Some dancers have neglected to acknowledge past dance group experience which meets the ADVANCED dancer criteria, while others have intentionally not told current dance group instructors of their past history. Your dancers may be moved to a more difficult category if we know the dancer is ADVANCED. It is the INSTRUCTOR S RESPONSIBILITY to objectively review and rate the level of the dancer before competition time, and this should be reflected on the contestants entry form. 3

RULES AND REGULATIONS SOLO DANCERS (ORI TAHITI) 1. ENTRY FORM To become a contestant, one must first fill out an entry form and return it with the entry fee by the required deadline (see entry form). 2. TIME LIMIT Minimum One (1) minute Maximum One and one half (1 ½) minutes 3. COSTUMES Vahine Pareo will be the costume. Traditional tapa, cotton or 50/50 blend, or Rayon may be used. Print or solid is fine. No silk, satin or knits. Length of the pareo may NOT be lower than the top of the knee. No hip bands, fringe, or rolls. Pareo should not be excessively short. A penalty of five (5) points will be deducted for the showing of underwear. Hei upo o (head hei), wrist and ankle garlands are optional but should be appropriate for the costume and age of the performer. Width of the hei should not exceed shoulders to protect other competitors from eye injury. SILK OR PLASTIC FLOWERS ARE PROHIBITED. NO HOT GLUE. Tane Tane may wear tihere or malo. Hei upo o (head hei), wrist and ankle garlands are optional but should be appropriate for the costume. Knee legging will be allowed but should not completely cover the leg.
