Group III Format In Group III of this year s Davis Cup Asia/Oceania competition there were 8 countries. The day before the matches started the 8 countries were split into 2 pools of 4 teams. Cambodia fell into Group A along with Syria, Malaysia, and Turkmenistan. Pool B comprised of Iran, Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, and Singapore. The winner of Pool A faces off against the runner-up of Pool B to move up to Group II, and vice versa for the winner of Pool B. The deciding factor was not head-to-head wins, but the winning percentage of sets played. Therefore, each set played would decide the fate of each country in Pool Play.
Wednesday, July 11 th 2014 vs. Syria Match 1: #2 Singles Pannhara Mam loses to Bruno Abdelnour Score: 6-3 6-2 Match 2: #1 Singles Kenny Bun defeats Marc Abdelnour Score: 6-4 7-6(4) Doubles Rubber Kenny Bun / Phalkun Mam lose to Marc Abdelnour/Bruno Abdelnour Score: 7-5 6-2 Match Summary The Syrian team, who mainly train in France and Canada, came into Wednesday s match hungry to play. Pannhara had chances in the 2 singles spot, but lost the match in straights. Cambodia would not go down so easily as Kenny was able to win a tough straight set match against Syrian No. 1 player, ranked 750 ATP in 2013. With the match tied at 1-1, it came down to doubles play, where the Syrian team used their experience to overcome Kenny and Phalkun to take the match.
Thursday, July 12 th, 2014 vs. Turkmenistan Match 1: #2 Singles Phalkun Mam defeats Georgiy Pochay Score: 6-3 6-4 Match 2: #1 Singles Kenny Bun defeats Aleksandr Ernepesov Score: 6-2 6-4 Doubles Rubber Phalkun Mam/Pannhara Mam lose to Aleksandr Ernepesov/Georgiy Pochay Score: 6-7(2) 6-4 6-4 Match Summary Following the opening loss to Syria, Cambodia bounces back to win the first two singles rubbers along with the match. With the match sealed, Cambodia fielded the Mam Brothers in doubles, who were unable to get the 3-0 against Turkmenistan, losing the doubles rubber in three close sets.
Friday, June 13 th, 2014, vs. Malaysia Match 1: #2 Singles: Pannhara Mam loses to Syed Agil Naguib 6-2 6-0 Match 2: #1 Singles: Kenny Bun defeats Mohd Assri Merzuki 6-3 6-1 Doubles Rubber: Kenny Bun/Phalkun Mam lose to Merzuki/ Naguib 6-7(4) 6-4 7-6(7) Match Summary: Cambodia went down quick in the first match, but Kenny was able to equal the match at 1-1 with a win over Malaysian No. 1. The match would be decided in a three-set thriller. In the 3 rd set tiebreaker Cambodia saved 3 match-points and earned a match point of their own at 7-6. Malaysia didn t let the comeback phase them, knocking off the next 3 points to take the match and the tie.
Saturday, June 14 th, 2014 vs. Singapore Match 1: #2 Singles Phalkun Mam defeats Joshua Liu Score: 6-4 6-3 Match 2: #1 Singles Kenny Bun defeats Roy Hobbs Score: 6-0 6-0 Doubles Rubber Samneang Long/Pannhara Mam lose to Isaac Yong Jie Ong/ Saeed Alam Score: 7-6(3) 6-3 Match Summary After the heartbreakingly close loss to Malaysia, Cambodia held it s head high to win both singles rubbers against Singapore. This included Kenny blitzing his opponent 6-0 6-0 (Kenny went unbeaten in singles in this year s campaign). With a spot in Group III secure, we were happy to field Samneang Long in the doubles rubber, where he and partner Pannhara tested their Singaporean opponents in two commendable sets.
