TEAM NOTES History Makers SSU went 19-14 overall, 10-6 in the MEAC, and 10-2 in Tiger Arena last year; all records were the best in the program s Division I era. It was also the best MEAC record the program has had since its first year of competition in 2011-12. They made history in the 2013-14 MEAC Tournament with wins over Morgan State and Florida A&M. They were the first basketball team in the school s history to make the semifinals of the MEAC Tournament. SSU lost to five-time defending MEAC Champion Hampton University in the semifinals. Setting The Bar Ezinne Kalu is the first women s basketball player in Savannah State Division I history to reach the 1,000 career points mark. She led the team in her freshman year (2010-11) with 401 points and again in her sophomore year (2011-12) with 529 points. Kalu scored her 1,000th point in a 55-70 loss to Mississippi State University on November 28, 2012. Kalu s junior season was interrupted by an injury late in December. She concluded the shortened year with 161 points. Kalu topped her fourth year at SSU with 516 total points, averaging 16.1 a game. She played in 32 games, starting in 23. She led the team in points, scoring average, field goals made (168), 3-point field goals made (35), free-throws made (145), assists (108), steals (85), and minutes (29.9). Prior to the 2014-15 season, she recorded 1,607 career points, averaging 16 points per game over her career. The MEAC is made up of 13 outstanding historically black institutions across the Atlantic coastline: Bethune-Cookman University, Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Florida A&M University, Hampton University, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University, Savannah State University and South Carolina State University. HISTORY IN BRIEF In 1969, a bold ad hoc group of innovators long associated with intercollegiate athletics met in Durham, N.C., to discuss the feasibility of organizing a new conference. Dissected from these discussions, a steering and planning committee was formed to fully investigate the idea, present a detailed report with recommendations to interested collegiate institutions, and then construct a workshop to outline proposals. After adopting a program, seven institutions (Delaware State College, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University and South Carolina State College) agreed to become the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Its major objective was to establish, organize and supervise an intercollegiate athletic program among a compact group of educational institutions of high academic standards and with a sound philosophy of co- curricular activities. The conference agreed to seek Division I status for its sports. 2014-15 MEAC Statistical LEADERS Team Scoring Offense (avg.)... 65.7, Delaware State Team Scoring Defense(avg.)... 56.6, N.C.
