JAGUAR BULLETIN Monday, March 12, 2018 Greetings Jaguar Parent(s)/Guardian(s)! As most of you know, this Wednesday, March 14, is the date set by various groups for the National School Walkout where students across the United States walk out of their classrooms at 10:00 AM to remember the 17 lives taken in the Florida school shooting and to demand action on the part of legislators to do something about gun violence in schools. The Superintendent, Dr. Reid, previously emailed parents about this event. I want update you on events at North Creek. Hundreds of students at North Creek have registered on the ActionNetwork.org to participate in the Walkout (though no registration is necessary). They are planning to march out to the central courtyard and Commons (to write letters and sign posters) for 17 minutes (one minute for each life lost) and then return peacefully to their classes. As the Superintendent stated, students who choose to participate and exercise their Constitutional rights will not be disciplined (as long as the protest is peaceful and non destructive). Students who choose not to participate (which will also be hundreds of students) will simply go to class as normal. We will be running a regular school day and teachers are ready to support both students who protest and students who do not. As Principal, I have asked Snohomish County Deputies to present at North Creek on the day of the protest to provide additional security so that students who choose to protest can do so safely. Administrators and my Campus Supervision team will also be very present to provide the safest possible environment for all students. We are one Jaguar community and if you as a parent want to be present to provide additional supervision, I ask that you contact the school in advance by emailing Wen Hay at WHay@nsd.org by the end of the day on Tuesday and by signing in and getting a visitor badge when you arrive at North Creek (which is the standard practice for all visitors at all times). In closing, I want to assure you that I and the District will be doing everything we can to keep every single student safe, not only on this day of protest but each and every day throughout the year.

At North Creek, we are trying to teach our students appropriate use of technology, especially cell phones. Teachers often allow students to use their phones for appropriate academic use, but when they are not being used, we ask that students place them in their backpacks. We make this request because having the phone in a pocket is still very distracting (especially when it vibrates on silent). Students feel the vibration and almost literally cannot stop themselves from checking their phone. I am asking that you, as parents and guardians, reinforce our policy that when a teacher is not having students use their phones for academic reasons, the phone (which remember is almost always your phone since you mostly likely bought it and pay the monthly charges) goes in the backpack. I think we can all agree that if a teenager cannot go for a full class period without checking Instagram or posting something to Snapchat, there is a serious problem. Finally, you can help us out by not texting your student during class. Often times, students get busted for checking their phones and when they say it s my mom it quite often is! If you need to text your student, please do so during our nutrition break or lunch breaks (the bell schedule is on our website) and if it s an emergency, you can always call our Main Of ice and we ll get the student for you quickly. Thanks in advance for your support! #2: Registration is Over (almost)! Last week, we registered nearly all our Jaguars for the 2018 19 school year. However, some students were absent, or didn t have a signed registration form. Please check with your student to make sure they turned in their registration form AND entered their requests into StudentVue. If they did not, or have any questions, they should see their Counselor as quickly as possible on Monday or Tuesday.
