JAGUAR BULLETIN Monday, March 12, 2018 Greetings Jaguar Parent(s)/Guardian(s)! As most of you know, this Wednesday, March 14, is the date set by various groups for the National School Walkout where students across the United States walk out of their classrooms at 10:00 AM to remember the 17 lives taken in the Florida school shooting and to demand action on the part of legislators to do something about gun violence in schools. The Superintendent, Dr. Reid, previously emailed parents about this event. I want update you on events at North Creek. Hundreds of students at North Creek have registered on the ActionNetwork.org to participate in the Walkout (though no registration is necessary). They are planning to march out to the central courtyard and Commons (to write letters and sign posters) for 17 minutes (one minute for each life lost) and then return peacefully to their classes. As the Superintendent stated, students who choose to participate and exercise their Constitutional rights will not be disciplined (as long as the protest is peaceful and non destructive). Students who choose not to participate (which will also be hundreds of students) will simply go to class as normal. We will be running a regular school day and teachers are ready to support both students who protest and students who do not. As Principal, I have asked Snohomish County Deputies to present at North Creek on the day of the protest to provide additional security so that students who choose to protest can do so safely. Administrators and my Campus Supervision team will also be very present to provide the safest possible environment for all students. We are one Jaguar community and if you as a parent want to be present to provide additional supervision, I ask that you contact the school in advance by emailing Wen Hay at WHay@nsd.org by the end of the day on Tuesday and by signing in and getting a visitor badge when you arrive at North Creek (which is the standard practice for all visitors at all times). In closing, I want to assure you that I and the District will be doing everything we can to keep every single student safe, not only on this day of protest but each and every day throughout the year.

At North Creek, we are trying to teach our students appropriate use of technology, especially cell phones. Teachers often allow students to use their phones for appropriate academic use, but when they are not being used, we ask that students place them in their backpacks. We make this request because having the phone in a pocket is still very distracting (especially when it vibrates on silent). Students feel the vibration and almost literally cannot stop themselves from checking their phone. I am asking that you, as parents and guardians, reinforce our policy that when a teacher is not having students use their phones for academic reasons, the phone (which remember is almost always your phone since you mostly likely bought it and pay the monthly charges) goes in the backpack. I think we can all agree that if a teenager cannot go for a full class period without checking Instagram or posting something to Snapchat, there is a serious problem. Finally, you can help us out by not texting your student during class. Often times, students get busted for checking their phones and when they say it s my mom it quite often is! If you need to text your student, please do so during our nutrition break or lunch breaks (the bell schedule is on our website) and if it s an emergency, you can always call our Main Of ice and we ll get the student for you quickly. Thanks in advance for your support! #2: Registration is Over (almost)! Last week, we registered nearly all our Jaguars for the 2018 19 school year. However, some students were absent, or didn t have a signed registration form. Please check with your student to make sure they turned in their registration form AND entered their requests into StudentVue. If they did not, or have any questions, they should see their Counselor as quickly as possible on Monday or Tuesday.

#3: ASB Executive Board Elections Currently, students are picking up ASB Election packets in order to be able to run for ASB Of ice. The ASB Exec Board plans all school activities, such as assemblies, as well as oversees all ASB fundraising activities for all clubs & activities. Additionally, they discuss other issues such as school climate and culture, etc. If your student in interested in running for ASB Of ice and has not yet picked up a packet, there is still time. Packets are due on Wednesday March 14th. #4: Upcoming Concerts! We have an Instrumental Music Concert this Thursday night (March 15) at 7 PM in the NCHS Gym. We have a Choral Music Concert on Thursday night (March 22) at 7 PM in the NCHS Theater. Please join us to hear our amazingly talented musicians! #5: Junior Class Fundraiser! From the Junior Class Of icers: Does your child want to attend a four year college? Do they know which standardized test they want to take for college: the SAT or ACT? When: March 21st (SAT), March 28th (ACT) from 1:00 6:00 PM Where: North Creek Commons (cafeteria) Sign them up with this form: https://goo.gl/forms/lk2qwxfinsx1spxt2 All proceeds will bene it the Junior Class for senior prom and senior breakfast! Thank you in advance for your support! #6: Parents Need for Teacher Interview Committees This spring, we ll be hiring a number of teachers as we add on another full grade for next year. As was the case last year, I would like at least two (2) parents to be on every interview team. Parent voice is extremely important to me as we select the best possible candidates to work with our kids. Interviews will be coming up in late March and during April (exact dates and times still TBD). If you are interested in serving on an interview team, please email our PTSA President Tracy Goodwin at nchstracy@gmail.com. She will coordinate all our parent teams. Thanks! #7: Tryouts for the 2018 2019 NCHS Cheer Team IMPORTANT Dates: Tuesday, April 17 from 6:30 7:30 PM Mandatory Parent/Athlete Meeting in the Commons for candidates interested in cheer Friday, April 20 by 4:00 PM All application paperwork DUE (including online FamilyID Registration) in the NCHS Main Of ice (Register HERE ) April 19, 20, 23, 24 from 3 6 PM Pre tryout Interviews at NCHS (15 minute interviews) April 30 May 4 from 3:30 5:30 PM Cheer Tryouts July 23 27 Cheer Leadership Camp at Central Washington University (Save the Date Mandatory for all cheerleaders)

#8: Upcoming National Tests for Students This is a friendly reminder that it is a high school graduation requirement in Northshore to meet standard on both the Math and English/Language Arts (ELA) Smarter Balanced Assessments. These assessments will be given this spring and more information can be found below. Who? All 10th graders will take both the ELA and Math tests this year as well as any 11th graders who have not yet met the ELA or Math standard. When? ELA tests will be given on April 16, 17, 23 and 24 during students regularly scheduled English classes. Math tests will be given on May 21, 22, 24 and 25 during students regularly scheduled Math classes. Where? Students will test in their English and Math classrooms (with make ups or extra time needed in the of ice). Questions? Please contact Ms. Waligorski by emailing at kwaligorski@nsd.org If your student has already taken and passed these tests, you may ignore this email. Not sure? Check ParentVue/StudentVue under Course History and Graduation Requirements. #9: Interesting Media School Walkout Website FIELD TRIPS March 2018 DEPART RETURN CLASS/ACTIVITY STAFF DESTINATION 3/15 3/17 HOSA Spokane Rainwater Spokane 3/20 3/20 Northlake Orchestra Festival Montague Redmond High School 3/22 3/22 Northlake Wind Ensemble Festival Montague Redmond High School 3/22 3/24 TSA State Stride Doubletree Hotel 3/28 3/28 Northlake Symphonic Band Festival Montague Redmond High School 3/29 3/29 Choral Large Group Contest Sullivan NPAC BHS
