Adventurous Activity Permit Scheme - Approved Assessors S Item Code FS120104 Jun/08 Edition no 2 0845 300 1818 Introduction This factsheet provides a guide to those wishing to become an Approved Assessor to assess Applicants for an adventurous activity permit. It should be read in conjunction with the factsheet FS120084 Scout Led Activities Index, and Policy, Organisation and Rules (POR) of The Scout Association. More detailed information on the scheme, for Applicants, responsible Commissioners, and for each activity can be found in separate factsheets. The Permit Scheme The Adventurous Activity Permit Scheme is a way of ensuring that an Applicant has the skills and experience to lead an adventurous activity for a group of young people in Scouting. It is designed to be flexible, allowing each permit to be tailored based on the Applicant s skills, experience and requirements. Approved Assessors There are two types of Approved Assessor. They are: 1 County Assessors Appointed by Counties to be Assessors for specific activities. 2 External Assessors Qualified individuals external to Scouting who are used to carrying out assessments when no County Assessors are available. How To Become A County Assessor County Assessors are appointed by Counties through the same process as any other adult appointment. To be considered as a County Assessor, or for renewal of a role as County Assessor, you need to fulfil the following criteria: 1 Technical Knowledge Hold the level of qualification, or equivalent or higher, as laid down for each activity in the first table below. 2 Assessment Skills Validate the Activity Assessor s version of module 25 of The Scout Association s Adult Training Scheme. 3 Remain Up To Date Have attended the equivalent of at least two days of technical updates within the last five years, if your National Governing Body qualification was gained more than five years ago. Technical Knowledge To ensure that they have the technical knowledge required, all County Assessors are required to hold a National Governing Body Qualification. Funding is available to assist potential County Assessors in gaining the qualifications they require. Further details on this can be found on the Activities pages of ScoutBase UK. Assessment Skills As well as having the required technical knowledge, County Assessors also require the skills to be able to assess. This training and validation is provided through Activity Assessor s version of Module 25 Assessing Learning (Adventurous Activities) of The Scout Association s adult training scheme. Due to the modular format of the training scheme this will involve no unnecessary training courses for those who already have these skills, as validation of these skills can be done through carrying out assessments with the support of a Training The Scout Information Centre Gilwell Park Chingford London E4 7QW Tel + 44 (0)20 8433 7100 Fax + 44 (0)20 8433 7103 email info.centre@scout.org.uk www.scoutbase.org.uk

page 2 of 6 Adviser (who will quite possibly be another County Assessor). Remain Up To Date It is important that County Assessors remain up to date and active within their activity. To ensure that they are, all County Assessors are required to have been on at least two days (14 hours) of technical update workshops within the last five years. This figure should be seen as the minimum rather than the target. These updates can include such events as: Scout Association Assessor Workshops National Governing Body Assessor Workshops National Governing Body qualification revalidation events. External Assessors Where County Assessors are not available to assess an Applicant, External Assessors can be used. This is not a Scouting appointment and will generally be used for a one off assessment. Due to the fact that External Assessors are not required to do any internal training or validation of their assessment skills they are required to hold National Governing Body qualifications that include assessing training. Details of the level of qualification they are required to hold can be found in the second table below.
