Forest Habitat The forest is specially suited to certain animals. The shade gives shelter and protection for deer and other animals. Squirrels and birds make nests in the leaves of the trees. Skunks make their homes in the ground or rotten tree trunks. Woodpeckers eat insects that live in the trunks of old trees. Many trees have acorns and berries that are food for forest animals. Spiders weave their webs where insects fly, hoping to catch them for food. Snails eat the fallen leaves and raccoons eat the snails!
