FRESNO RIVERSPORT CENTER THE PADDLESPORT CAMP The Paddlesport Camp The Paddlesport Camp is not your traditional summer camp. Most of a camper s time will be spent on the water in canoes, kayaks, and standup paddle boards. Campers will be taking instructional courses sanctioned by USA Paddlesports and the California Department of Boating and Waterways. Campers will learn basic water safety and paddling skills and rescues. They will also have the opportunity to go on an 8.5 mile river trip. Campers will use their paddling skills to participate in a wide variety of on-the-water games including sprint races, kayak water polo, chariot races, and capture the flag. Friday is Paddlesport Olympics day. Campers will use their skills to compete in Olympic style events and earn medals. In addition to Paddlesport activities campers will connect with the San Joaquin River through science, leadership and stewardship activities. They will study macro invertebrates, investigate wildlife and learn about the effort to return salmon to the river. Campers will also participate in the Initiative and Confidence Leadership program and perform a river stewardship activity. Why Choose the Fresno RiverSport Center? The RiverSport Center is a leader in providing San Joaquin River recreation, education, and RiverSport Centers. Every year we involve 1000 s of participants in outdoor education field trips, paddlesport instructional programs and river trips, and stewardship projects. Our staff includes credentialed teachers, experienced natural resource docents, and certified paddlesport instructors. Our events are not only fun but educational and safe! The RiverSport Center is recognized as an Aquatic Center by the State of California Department of Boating and Waterways. We provide water safety and paddlesport instructional classes that prepare participants to paddle safely and effectively. Our paddlesport staff receive extensive training in first aid and CPR and are certified United States Canoe Association instructors. The RiverSport Center is your best choice for San Joaquin River paddlesport programs. We take great care in planning all of our events to make sure they are well organized, start and finish on time, and provide an enjoyable experience. Our river guides and instructors paddle the San Joaquin River in Fresno more than any other group. They are eager to share their knowledge and love for the river with you. We use only the best equipment. This includes Jackson Kayaks and Paddle Boards, coast guard approved life jackets, safety whistles, and helmets. Our guides and instructors are equipped with wireless radios, tow ropes and throw ropes, cell phones, and complete first aid kits. The RiverSport Center is committed to environmental leadership. All of our events include interpretation. Participants learn about the unique San Joaquin River ecosystem, river restoration, and its importance for California Water Resources. We also perform regular large scale river cleanups. The RiverSport Center is confident your camper will have a great Summer Camp experience with us that will exceed all expectations! 1

Contact: Steve Starcher, sstarcher@riversportcenter.org, 559-289-8874 We will be providing camp contact information for each week of camp. Locations Cobb Ranch : This is our home base! Directions: Take HWY 41 North and cross the San Joaquin River. Take the first exit past the river: Cobb Ranch Blvd/Rio Mesa Blvd. Turn right at the top of the hill and then turn right at the bottom of the hill. Turn left at the first road. You will see signs for Panoche Creek River Ranch and for Wildwood Mobile Park. Go straight ahead and follow this road until you see the Cobb Ranch sign. You will drop your camper off in the grass area.. Lost Lake Park: If your camper wishes to go on a river trip you will need to transport them to Lost Lake Park on that day. (River Trips are not required!) Our insurance does not allow us to transport students. We will make sure you know the river trip day well in advance. Early check in will be available. Directions: From HWY 41 take Friant Road East. Lost Lake Park is located on the North side of the road just before the town of Friant. Once inside the Park you will turn left just past the parking Kiosk. Follow the road until its starts to go uphill. You will turn left and go downhill toward the river. You will see the kayaks and staging area. What to Wear & Bring What to wear: Campers should be dressed appropriately. Swimsuits and t-shirts are appropriate dress and must be worn at all times when on the water. Swimsuits can be worn under short pants. Please make sure the t-shirts have sleeves. This will protect against sunburn. It is a good idea to have your camper bring a change of clothes. Your camper should not wear jewelry, rings, large ear rings or necklaces. These can be easily lost or caught in branches and cause serious injuries. Closed toe shoes are required. No flip flops or open toe sandals. Water shoes or old tennis shoes are a good choice. Water sandals must have a heel strap. A dry pair of shoes would be good for the ride home. Please make sure your camper s name is on all personal items! This will help if they get lost. Monday Morning Check-In Check in will be at the Cobb Ranch Lawn Area. Please be patient when waiting for your child to be checked in. We need to check in every child individually to make sure that they are properly placed in a group. We have multiple registration tables and try to be as fast and efficient as possible. You should still allow extra time on Monday morning! To help the morning run more smoothly, parents can do the following: Make sure your child has already applied their sun block and they are prepared with a lunch and plenty of water. Have the camp balance paid ahead of time. We require that the balance is paid two weeks prior to camp. If you are bringing a summer camp packet make sure they are filled out completely. The release form must be signed and emergency phone numbers, contacts and medical information must be complete. Find your counselor. Signs with their names are placed on the picnic tables adjacent to the pavilion. Put your ice chest and backpacks on the appropriate picnic tables. Daily Check-In You will need to check your children in and out each day. Check in time is 8:30 am. Camp begins promptly at 9:00 am. If they are not here, we will call you. If you know that they will be late or missing a day, please let us know at (559) 289-8874. (There are no refunds for missed days!) Early drop-off is from 7:00 am to 8:30 am. Cost is $10.00 per day. Arrangements must be made in advance! Daily Check-Out Camp instruction and cleanup is over at 3:30 pm. Checkout is between 3:30 pm and 4:00 pm at the Pavilion. Your child must be signed out every afternoon. Campers are not allowed to leave on their own or wait alone. This is for their safety! Late pick-up is available from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Cost is $10.00 per day. Arrangements must be made in advance! If your child is in a carpool we must have written permission for pickup. Parents Night On Wednesday at 5:30 pm we are looking forward to seeing you for Parent s Night! This is a chance for your child to show off some of their newly acquired skills. Bring a swim suit and go canoeing, kayaking or paddle boarding with your child. Bring a picnic dinner and enjoy the shade of the beautiful Cobb Ranch. Cost is $10.00 for 1 parent or $25.00 for a family (4 participants). You will need to make a reservation and payment no later than Tuesday of your camp week. Parents and other participants will be required to sign a liability waiver before going on the water. Paddlesport Olympics Parents are welcome to attend the Friday Paddlesport Olympics day. Your camper will be participating in a series of races and games to test their skills.
