A Strong, Precocious Type By Dual Group One Winning Stallion STAR WITNESS out of a Stakes Performed TESTA ROSSA Mare
By a Group 1 Winner at Two & Three Years This September born filly is by Group 1 winning young sire, STAR WITNESS. A sprinter with a rare turn of brilliant speed, Star Witness was the winner of three races in his juvenile year. They included the iconic Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes and the Listed Talindert Stakes. In his two-year-old year alone, his connections earned $717,700. As a three-year-old, he showed it was no freak when he was victorious is the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes and then ran a gallant second to World Champion Mare, BLACK CAVIAR in the Group 1 Patinack Classic. This fantastic form earned him a trip to Royal Ascot for a crack at the Group 1 King s Stand Stakes. Beaten only half a length into second (of 19 runners), he then contested the Group 1 Gold Jubilee only four days later, finishing third (of 16). Star Witness was crowned Champion 3 Year Old Colt 2010/11 and earned the very impressive World Timeform rating of 116. In only 13 starts, he earned just short of $1.368 million on the track. Star Witness was retired to stud on his return to Australia. Star Witness got off to a great start at stud, with his some of first two year olds showing his natural precocity. He finished third on the 14/15 First Season Sires List behind Hinchinbrook and Beneteau (deceased). This season, he is #1 on the Second Season Sires List by Winners. His stakes winning progeny include PEARL STAR, THE BARRISTER, WELL SPRUNG and stakes placed Star Turn, Kimberley Star, Lineker, Mella Maria, Serenade, Stellar Collision and Typhoon Witness. Star Witness yearlings have been very popular in the sales ring. They have sold for up to $750,000 with 33 making over $100,000 and being sought by top trainers. STAR WITNESS
From a Quality Female Family The filly s dam is the two-year-old city winner, Rosa Delago. She was also stakes placed as a threeyear-old and won over $100,000 for her connections. Rosa Delago is a daughter of top class sire, TESTA ROSSA. Sire of Magic Millions winner UNENCUMBERED amongst many stakes winners, he is shaping up as a top class broodmare sire as well. While still relatively young in this role, his daughters have already produced stakes winners MARKY MARK, DISPOSITION, LE CHEF and SNIPPETS LAND and a further seven stakes place getters. Rosa Delago s damsire is ENCOSTA DE LAGO, a Champion Sire (twice) of racehorses such as PRINCESS COUP, ALINGHI, RACING TO WIN, LASHED, MNEMOSYNE, SACRED KINGDOM, NORTHERN METEOR, DELAGO DELUXE etc. As a broodmare sire, Encosta De Lago has also excelled, producing the dams of 26 Group winners including JAPONISME, PEEPING, MUSIR etc. Further back, this is also the family of Group 2 winner, TWIGLET and her Group 1 winning son FAIRY KING PRAWN Champion Hong Kong Sprinter (3 times) and earner of over $7 million in Hong Kong and Japan and Group 1 winner EASY ROCKING. Group 1 winning filly COSMIC ENDEAVOUR is a granddaughter of Twiglet. A Highly Compatible Mating The mating of Star Witness and Rosa Delago rates very highly on parent compatibility, based on line breeding patterns and proven crosses. A Pedigree Dynamics analysis of this mating states that, The filly s dam Rosa Delago has a great broodmare pattern, being inbred 3 x 4 to FAIRY BRIDGE through the three-quarter brothers PERUGINO and FAIRY KING. The mating with Star Witness contributes fellow family member NUREYEV (a half brother to SPECIAL) on his sire line. Further reinforcing this Elite family is a highly successful pattern.
The Trainer The filly will be trained by Jarrod Austin of Austin Racing Stables, Warwick Farm. Jarrod was a vital part of the selection process for this filly. Along with Champagne Syndications team, Jarrod combed the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale in Sydney and finally secured this stunning filly. Great consideration was given not only to type, but the compatibility of sire and dam as a pre-requisite to the short-listing of suitable types to inspect. "This filly is nice and strong and typical of the Star Witness breed. Not only is she a great type and a fantastic mover, but she is out of a stakes performed mare one of our prerequisites. I'm very happy to be able to train her." (Jarrod Austin) In the Sydney training ranks, Jarrod would be described as a 'boutique trainer', currently having a small select stable of about twenty horses in work. Jarrod's life long experience in the racing industry - including as a private trainer - was rewarded with immediate success when he decided to establish himself as a public trainer. Commencing in 2011 with a 'handful' of horses, he achieved a Sydney city double including a Stakes win in his first season, along with many city and provincial winners. In the 2014/15 season, 60% of starters won or placed. Jarrod has enjoyed prominence with stakes horses such as TERRITORY, URQUIDEZ, SPINNAWITCH, and up-and-coming German imported stayer, NAPOLEON. He now has some well bred, promising two year olds in his yard by commercial sires, which he is optimistic will even further enhance his training record. Jarrod Austin has a decidedly hands on approach, with the philosophy that in order to realise each horse's best potential, it should be happy, healthy and fighting fit. They receive highly individual and specialised care which, combined with a dedicated professional team, patience and hard work, make up the key ingredients of Austin Racing's successful formula. See Austin Racing's website. A distinguishing feature of the Austin Racing Stables at Warwick Farm is the presence of grass paddocks at the rear of the stable block. His horses enjoy a more natural lifestyle and he intermingles their track work with swimming and bush rides in order to keep them happy and relaxed. Jarrod often rides the horses himself on slow work days to get a feel for them as individuals. His reputation as a genuine horseman is well known and consequently, the quality of his young stock has risen as he attracts the attention of owners and industry participants. This augurs well for the success of both Austin Racing Stables and Champagne Syndications in the next few seasons.
